Fair comment. I'll add a couple of things.

I haven't actually seen it mentioned that it is the ACL that was torn.

Secondly on recovery... according to Google (lol) the average return to action is about 8 months, which takes us into April. It's not ludicrous to suggest that with modern recovery models he could be back in 8 months, or even sooner. These days rehab starts almost immediately, and footballers have access to the highest level of sports science money can buy, from strength training to nutrition, cryo chambers, massages on tap and whatever else they need.

Obviously this proves nothing on a case by case basis, but to hope for a return in March isn't *crazy* like it felt the post above yours suggested. It's ok to hope. If he's not back this season, qué sera. We get a quality footballer next season for the CL push.

I'll make a bet! ;) Look, football clubs are pretty cagey for some reason about revealing specifics of injuries, but as the person said above, if he needed an ortho to repair the ligament (which it seems pretty clearly the case), the recovery doesn't really vary that much. I've been around sport for a long time; have dealt with my players getting ACL tears. They suck. And 9 months is typical to where you can start working hard, but then you have to add being ready for a competitive professional match. I would love to be wrong. But I would bet heavily on his season being over. My one out here is it not being clear whether he had surgery or not. Ok, checked again: confirmed surgery on insta: https://www.instagram.com/p/CxRBwZPIaCL/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

I don't know the exact details off the top of my head, but I did see reports about him possibly being back in training in March. So we may see him around April?

Went back to look for reports, but the club stated it was a "significant ACL injury." And it seems like most people understood that to be a tear. If so, it would be really hard for him to be available to play in a competitive match for a minimum of 9 months, most likely longer. Just no way to rush ligament repair. I would be absolutely shocked if he played any part in this campaign.

Yeah i've wanted to go to Switzlerland for a while, never been, potentially a perfect opportunity.

From what i've seen, the place literally looks like something out of a fantasy movie!

Switzerland is unbelievable and Luzern is one of the prettiest small cities in the world. Huge fan.

He personally finds it difficult to take to the podcast. It doesn't then follow that he believes all non-UK based Villa fans should sit down, be quiet and avoid having any opinion on the club or football in general - if he did, he'd be really unlikely to be posting on VT.

A matter of personal taste doesn't equate xenophobia. As I said in my initial post, I can understand the frustration with the point being expressed, but I also don't think the opinion expressed by the initial poster is an unreasonable or hateful one either. I can see both sides basically.

I will say as someone who has never been to Birmingham, much less Villa Park, I do bristle just a bit on how that inherently limits a fan and/or podcaster's insight. I would say, I don't think it matters *at all*. What matters, to me: is the content insightful? educational? entertaining? I'm sure there are lots of fans who have attended tons of games at VP who, for a multitude of reasons, would very much *not* be worth hearing from.

If that is just a matter of personal taste, okay.

I don't have a clue what JPA is saying as his name, but it's definitely not what you'd expect. Maybe he used a nickname. He doesn't say 'me' either. It's just 'Djohare, brother'.

Probs is, in the heat of anger and passion, people often tend to forget that at the end of the day these are still humans we are dealing with.

That goes for Managers and players.

It's why I said earlier sometimes I hate watching pressers because inside I'm always think " Man I want it to work out for you but you keep making the same mistakes, let's go again I'm routing for you ".

We've passed that point though I think, and unfortunately, my loyalties lay with what's best for the club.

I rarely post, but I'm jumping in to cosign this sentiment and to add one more: I just feel despondent. Another manager search inevitably on the horizon. Oh joy. Season's gone. Project a shambles. Fun.

I don't think no one on here voting for him as captain means anything, people on here won't have much of a clue at all who should be captain as they don't know the players personally and aren't around the team, so who should be captain is something we can only really guess at.

Also not sure why people are talking as if he isn't very good or whatever, I agree that we need to strengthen midfield, but if McGinn was to leave he'd be going to a club in a better situation than us, he's nowhere near as bad as people make out.

It's something the fans probably know the least about as far as the team is concerned. How could we? It's pretty much some people mad at the implication that it means he'll play more than they want him to. It says nothing about his actual leadership abilities. You'd have to be among the players and staff to have any idea.

Consistency is the issue here and John can get caught on the ball due to his iffy ball control......Great, when he's great, but consistency is key.

playing further forward and having insurance behind him, we may see a more aggressive/ascertive McGinn.

I still worry about his ability to stay on the ball in a challenge.

I'm not going to pretend that I am some authoritative voice in assessing football talent, but my perception is that he retains the ball well. I'm trying to recall a time where he has lost possession being caught on the ball. Wayward passes, yes. I remember some of those (but a bunch of great passes too). My memory may be failing me (or my observational ability).

I’m a fan of McGinns, always have been. He’s pissed me off at times but I think he’s a good player who needs rotation. He eventually starts looking knackered in games.

That seems a very fair assessment.

So I think there are two dimensions here. There is the reality (IMO) one: McGinn is going to be in the first 11 next year for most games. It's just a description (based on a bit of speculation).

Then there is the 2nd dimension, a prescriptive one: *should* McGinn be in the first 11. I was only making a point about the 1st dimension. I'm happy to bet!

But if you want to know my view on the 2nd (I'm sure you all can't wait!): I am always a little surprised at how much stick McGinn gets on here. He has a well-rounded game.

That would be a lot better than this year.....get it done Villa

Not meant to single you out because I have seen versions of this across several threads, but in what world will John McGinn not be starting week in and week out?

Too many people confuse "running around a lot" with "giving 100% for the team"

    Ollie runs around a lot

No, Watkin's workrate is *so* far above everyone else's and every other striker I've ever seen. It's fair to say doing that is giving 100% for the team.

Just looked at Watkins heat map from last season. It's ridiculously weighted left side of opposition half.

Then I did game week range that Grealish was out and it's even more pronounced left side

100%. He was always drifting into the left channel. Very rarely on the right.

40 mill is peanuts now considering the problem we have going on which is we have Watkins who can score in his position and that's that.

Watkins gets put out for any particular reason then 40 million for another quality forward who can carry on the work and help us get into Europe is going to be nothing is it.

40 million (and im using this media floated price) for a prem striker who can be used as much as what Watkins can be which in turn offers Watkins recouperated time all while 40 mill forward Carry's on scoring doesn't seem all that much does it.

40 million to make a real pairing partnership between Tammy and Watkins who can be a possible England pairing doesn't seem all to much does it.

There are lots of reasons to pay 40 mill for an effective capable quality back up to our main man.

Definitely not peanuts, for one. But your claim that it's really no problem to add a record-breaking transfer striker to the team and keep him and another record-breaking transfer happy just doesn't hold up. If Watkins is fit, he wants to start every game. This is surely true of Tammy as well. You think either would be jazzed about being on a team where they start half the games is naive, imo. It's one competitive advantage a team like Villa have over the Man City's of the world. We can attract some players who don't want to sit on the bench.

  16. Just want to co-sign others and say that Luiz has shown that he can be tireless terrier. (Post-covid restart he was clearly the fittest player on the team). And I can't emphasize enough, HE'S 23! If Villa are looking for a successful model, surely bringing through promising players, counting on them, and seeing them improve into their prime playing years is the right strategy.

not quite getting Spain hate for this game at least. They have been pretty direct, which seems to be people's usual criticism.

    The NFL comparison is interesting.

If the Bears sell three millions shirts and the Packers sell one million, which club gets the most money? They get the same, because the league owns the shirt deal. Who manufactures the Cowboys shirts? The same company that manufactures everyone's shirts, because the league make the deal. It's the league that control the clubs, not the other way around. The league collects on that deal and divides the money up between all of the teams.

It's that collectivism that makes the NFL a success, it's completely un-American in many ways, but it keeps them controlled, it allows them to impart parity and it means if you don't like it, the league give your team to someone else.

The last thing that this group of 12 teams want is parity, the last thing they want is to share their wealth with others - they want to become the league and at the same time be teams within that league. They want to collect all of the money and keep just about all of it for themselves.

This is all true, but I would that, yes these don't want parity, but that's because their resources aren't guaranteed like the NFL. If instead of you getting the top draft pick on an amazingly cheap salary (relatively) for being the worst team, you got relegated, the Cowboys would want nothing to do with parity.

Because the owners are protected from taking huge losses.  So clubs are free to compete on the field while all the owners share in the profits win or lose.

In european football lose enough and your club can cease to exist. No billionaire owner is going to be okay watching their quarter billion asset go poof into thin air. I seriously detest this super league but I fully understand why the biggest clubs have made this play.

That is an excellent way of putting it.

They have a better set up of balance in terms of keeping teams fresh, the youth players going to the worst teams is a good idea but the trade off is a system where the league is dead. Baseball teams play 162 games in a season just to be seeded for the play offs, pointless.

Yeah, for me, it really is a case of me really liking the parity of U.S. sports and knowing that it comes with significant costs.

This will be hilarious. I’m honestly not bothered, nor surprised by this. If they want to go off and form another league, great, let them.

Football is so, so corrupt and broken. I don’t know why I bother with it. Probably because I sat in the Holte End all them years ago. Probably because my dad and his dad before him stood on the Holte End all them years ago.

But just look at what it is now. VAR, FFP, club ownership, TV rights, the salaries of players. It’s f****** rubbish.

Im a villa fan but football is really, really s***.

I have nothing of that history, but I simultaneously can't turn away, while seeing how obviously messed up it is.
