The missing villa man, I do wonder why this guy isn't atleast on the bench

As said purely a numbers game Dean Smith addressed this at one of the press conferences when asked about Guilbert, his bench will be a a GK, two defenders, two midfielders and two strikers.

I can't see him starting in the PL until Elmo really messes up.

He scored goals in the Championship.

Premier League is a different kettle of fish.

I'm not saying he can't, just that it's not a given.

Also, while I'm a fan of Hourihane, he was a BIT of a luxury for us. Absolutely worth having in the team for his set piece ability and his ability to get a goal but he did lack things in other areas.
Is that a luxury we can afford in the Premier League?

Open question, I'm just thinking out loud.

At the expense of El Ghazi I'd say yes definately.

We've conceded 5 goals in 2 games and been poor from set pieces and corners. The defense needs help and we need a goal scoring option I think Conor brings both of those.

This, I think we were far to open at times V Bournemouth, I would drop el Gazi for him, and hopefully when upto speed left footed "Marvelous" will come into the team next to Luiz

I share other peoples gripes about set pieces on Saturday, they were frankly awful.

    Same.

Watching McGinn over hit corners, or watching us waste our freekicks was angering. Conor serves a purpose in this team.

Grealish and McGinn draw so many fouls each match so having someone who can consistently whip in a great ball makes us a threat. We are struggling with goals, so we can't afford to waste the few chances we get.

Conor needs to get into the team.

    3-5-1-1?

I think he needs to start next to Douglas Luiz in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

He’s in desperate need of a dedicated striker coach. Would love to see Terry convince Drogba to come in and work with him for a month or two. Has the right physical ingredients but needs some specific Premier League coaching.

He's not the same type of striker as Drogba, dare I say it but he'd be better off with Heskey coaching him same sort of player who will probably score a similar amount of goals.

Also, stats wise we’re 5th overall for crosses in the PL, behind Liverpool, Leicester, Burnley and Spurs. So I think it’s just a matter of time and tuning in to each other’s runs etc.

It’ll just take time, one goal (hopefully this weekend against Everton) and I think he’ll really kick off.

    PL Stats

What's the point of putting crosses in when we have no one on the end of them? We need to stop this fascination with crosses we are a very different team to last year and Wesley needs it at his feet with his back to goal not some floaty cross going nowhere!

  7. Re-watched the game last night and other that the two obvious blunders that cost us we really weren't that bad Jack, SJM, Wesley and Taylor all had chances they really should have put away I think there needs to be some work on finishing at BMH this week! Saying that Bournemouth should have had a third when Fraser was one on one with Heaton and possible another penalty against Trez seen those given before.

The two stand out weak links for me were Al Ghazi and Wesley. Al Ghazi just doesn't seem up to speed yet and Wesley just doesn't seem a player I know it's early still for him but he isn't filling me with confidence....yet!

SJM was outstanding again but I think Trez and Elmo also had really good games.

We are trying to put to many crosses in when there is no one there to get on them, this was really annoying. I'd like to see a change to the 4-3-3 system to a 4-2-3-1 to be more direct through the centre of the park with Al ghazi dropped and Conor/Marvelous coming alongside Douglas Luiz, with Wesley holding up the ball for Trez, Jack and SJM to bomb on to, it's the only way I can see us getting goals we need!

Once Guilbert comes into the team after a couple of games people will look back on these last pages and have a good laugh, and probably think what an insightful post this is (regardless of who wrote it, anyone could have). Similar with a lot of threads, way too early to be writing off any of our players yet, or indeed going over the top with praise.

You say to early to be writing players off but also say 'Once Guilbert comes into the team' when Elmo has done nothing to deserve being replaced?

Pretty absurd to ask him to drop deep, be the link-up, i.e targetman then complain he hasn't scored in two matches with very limited service.

Just be patient with him and he'll get 12-13 goals

In all competitions maybe, can't see it happening in the PL alone......8-10 tops but would love to be proven wrong!

Hopefully a few assists along the way though if we play to his strengths.

He would've taken chances better that Trezeguet flubbed

Have to disagree there I think Trez looks like a PL player and will continue to get a start.

    Too slow. End of.

Can't see him doing anything other than coming off the bench later on in games, looked OK in pre season and a decent squad player but not good enough to start in this team in the PL.

    I’d take a point.

Me too and I reckon that is what we will get, good team Everton.

    Team I'd like to see

    ---------------------Heaton-------------------

    Elmo--Engels-----Mings----Taylor

    -------------Luiz--------Conor-------------

    Trez-----------McGinn--------Grealish

    --------------------Wes-----------------------

    It is truth in that.

But on the bright side. If they do decide to buy him it will be because Luiz has done really well for us.

Yeah doesn't always work like that unfortunately, be nice if they were to buy him back as he'd improved and they want him for themselves but often it's purely to sell them on so they make the profit. Oh well is what it is.

  14. I'm really exited about this kid, highly rated by Guardiola and rumour of a buy-back clause? Don't know if there is any truth in that.

Get him match fit and I'm hoping he's a huge success in a position we are definitely going to need to be strong in this season.

I think he had a decent game and was a handful against spurs.

Naturally he is going to be compared to Joelinton & Haller this season because of their physicality and price.

We should be patient with him.

We should be patient we're a game in but he needs to learn fast and use his size more he was expecting the ref to blow every time he was touched! If he can score 8-10 goals and have 10 assists it'll be money well spent.

He won't score as many as Haller, but Haller was twice the price and could turn out to be a great signing for West Ham I reckon he could be good for 12-16 goals in the prem, would have loved to have seen him come to Villa.

I think Newcastle got bent over paying that much for Joelinton we'll see.

Bournemouth do lack creative players, but are very dangerous on the counter attack. Got some pacey players.

They do I agree but I think we looked very organised in defense against spurs and we got back quickly when needed, we'll see though........I am quietly confident and at home to a bottom half side we should be getting results if we want to stay up.
