For Croatia against England, he looked outstanding, a commanding goalkeeper that we haven’t had for years. Not only that but he looked good with his feet, looked the complete goalkeeper. Based on that performance v England and that’s all I’ve seen of him, I’m surprised a top club hasn’t come in for him. ( I know it’s only one game but he just looked brilliant)

great if true, but if true why is he coming to Villa and not a Prem team or another top flight team abroad?, not trying to be negative, just realistic.

Honestly these days I just assume that a keeper being signed at this level is a good shot stopper. Shot stoppers are ten a penny.

The other parts of their game is much more important. I'm far more interested in how good Kalinic is at commanding his box, communicating and coordinating with his defence, distributing, dealing with high balls; than I am with whether he can make spectacular saves.

    Totally agreed.

    1) flaps a bit at 1 minute in this vid

    2) a few good saves and takes though

I think we need to be careful with "he is a good shot stopper" :P, we need that as well as someone commanding with crosses, and commands their area well.

    1) decent shot stopper :P

regardless, the guy is a BIG UNIT (6ft 7in?), just his presence is prob pretty spooky :), from the vids i have looked at he is agile for a big man and a good shot stopper, havent really managed to find anything related to gathering crosses and commanding the area etc.

I believe he works at the hospital or whatever where they do our medicals, he doesn’t work for the club as such (I think). But he’s made aware of names that are booked in.

    right ok, good stuff then.

    really pleased if its true.

Yep, easily an 8/10, the guy tweeting works for the place that does our medicals. He's very reliable when it comes to transfers. I've never seen him tweet rumours or guesses either.

Isn't that a bit naughty that a guy working in our medical dept giving away our possible signings before they are concluded?????

  6. whats the certainty level on this?

    Certainty level is rated from:

1/10 - we are signing messi, i saw him walking around somewhere in europe possibly wearing a shirt with some purple on it and the purple was defo Villa purple not Barcelona purple.

    to

10 /10 - i had a drink with him last night and he showed me a copy of a signed contract.

Lastly, i assume the fact hes now an international regular means the work permit is no longer an issue?

Really happy if its tru tho.

I've said it before Hourihane is a lot better when he plays the deeper role and dictates the play. He has a great passing range and helps to break up the play, but box to box he goes missing.

Whelan and Hourihane together doesn't work, but yesterday Whelan was the better of the two.

Granted he can pass a bit, but playing in that deeper role in theory is ok, apart from the fact he doesn't tackle, goes missing and rather than chase people down when someone goes past him or takes the ball off him he just stands there looking at the ref with his arms in the air.

He really is a liability when we don't have the ball, and saying that about our supposed ball playing DM is scary.

  8. am i correct in believing that we are 5th in the form table? (for the last 10 games - aka DS in role)

5 wins, 3 draws, 2 losses, and in that run we have played Swansea, Derby, Boro, WBA, Stoke, Blose & Forest, basically 70% of our games under DS were versus promotion contenders or teams around us.

    Not too bad overall :)

FYI the teams above us in the form table (last 10 games) are Norwich, Leeds, Derby & PNE, but i bet none of those have had played the teams we have in that run.

P.S - in the last 7 games we are third in the form table (4 wins, 3 draws, 0 losses), with only Norwich and Leeds above us. (and 6 of those 7 games were versus promotion contenders/teams immediately around us)

Last 7 games our goal difference is 10, which is second only to Norwich with +11, the next best team is only +5 (WBA).

There is talk coming out of a possible Benteke return, to not only help both clubs profit from his future sales but tò see if he can fire in goals for us again.

Christian played well for us banging in a ton of goals in three seasons. I think it could be what we need to partner Tammy if we don't get Odoi that is.

I bet Dean Smith could get Benteke firing again and Christian knows himself he had a brilliant spell with our club.

What do you all think of a Christian Benteke return??

Wages probably too high, but more than that he probably wouldn't suit our style of play?

He's perfect for us. We're too good for The Championship too.

To be fair the proof is in the pudding, for the last 2.5 seasons we haven't been too good for the championship, hence the reason we are still here.

But here's to the future and the hope we can be too good for the championship in the near future.

so that's £8m to make the El Ghazi deal permanent, another £5m or so for a goalie and the rest for a LB and contracts?

If you look though the balance has increased by roughly 80m since these guys took over.

I guess covering debts or something?, and also injecting cash to spend in the future?, possibly also covering liabilities?, dunno.

Whilst we need new full backs you can’t blame Hutton for that goal. Phillips ran from the half way line to get in that position and Kodija just stood there. To be fair for him it’s not his natural position but 2 minutes to go he has to be doing his bit.

Yeah to be fair I think Hutton has done pretty well and I actually rate Elmo at RB also, all I really mean is although they have done decent overall, to improve a as team we really do need upgrades in those positions.

Gk is by far the most important improvement we need though....

When we enter the transfer market in January.....I hope the half time team talk from Darren Moore ,will echo in the ears of those that have the job of bringing new  players in.

" Lets get the ball out wide, and bodies in the box"

now we all know the implications of what that means.

Despite Dean playing some fabulous football, we need to nullify the likes of that statement much better than we are, if we want to go up.

Aka new full backs, a new CB and a GK? :)

  14. Watching Jack this season, one of the things that impressed me aside from the passes and dribbles etc, is that when the ball gets to him in mid field it sticks to him like glue.

Where other players can mid control the ball or turn and get tackled or knocked off the ball etc, Jack shields it really well and rarely if ever let's it get taken off him, that's then followed by either a simple or really good pass or a run, or let's himself get fouled.

So yeah what impressed me as much as anything else with him is whenever the ball goes towards him I am always very confident he has it all under control and never let's someone hustle the ball off him or surround and tackle him, I think that a seriously underrated skill he is really good at shielding, controlling, keeping and spraying the ball around.

Watching the highlights it's incredible we don't win the game after all the chances we are creating.  Need to be more clinical

Yeah if we were more clinical.....boy! :)

I think it's semi comical that if other players were missing the glaring chances abraham was missing quite a few ppl on this forum would be screaming for them to be dropped.

granted he scores a few , but I'm undecided if the ones he misses are forgivable because he gets himself in positions to score or miss, would be interested to see how another decent striker would do scoring wise in this DS system so I have something to compare against.

    We’ve bought nyland out right.

From the rumours going around about Heaton, that would also be a full signing rather than a loan. If we do bring in Heaton, I think we’ll send back moreira.

Liking the look of El Ghazi, but I think it makes more sense to activate any clause we have to buy him in the summer, when we know what division we’ll be in.

To be fair I would want El Ghazi for 5m whether we were in the championship or the premiership.
