  1. The honeymoon period is over. Dean Smith has had a tough time, but he has been without players and for the most part using a different managers squad.

He needs to be given another season, or else season after season we will be saying the same thing. Its not his squad it was the previous managers squad, cause the current manager hasnt had the time to make it his squad.

Rightly or wrongly, Dean Smith is going to curve the future for Villa like no manager before him. Aston Villa are changing the structure of the club and with it a new philosophy of how we play and how we sign players. Dean Smith is going be heralded or hated this time next season, for the sake of Aston Villa, we should all be hoping its for the better.

Dean Smith is one of us, lets give him time, no other manager is going to give a damn like he should. Another 12 months and lets review, we could be in relegation and we could be sitting top. Excuses will dry up this time next season.

I’m sure we lost back to back games after Wolves. 3-1 to QPR and 1-0 to Bolton?

edit: I do like what you’ve put together though.

Actually is it because the QPR game got moved but it’s in the original place on your table?

The QPR game is in its original place on the table as it was postponed and moved.

I cant take credit for the table, as I copied it from another source.

Is this table correct?  We lost both games after Wolves to QPR and Bolton, we then drew up at Hull, those 3 games alone were shyte, I would also include the gutless performance down at Norwich, made worse by the fact Cardiff had lost the night before against Wolves, not to mention the shambles of the play off final.

For the squad at his disposal last season there was a lot of shyte, in no way did he do a great job, not even close.

Game 35 was the postponed game which should be moved 3 places to the right on the chart in between game 38 and 39. Which would show the form as W L L D W.

I agree with you his mediocre job last season finishing 4th......I would so hate for that this season. Maybe I am so used to Villa being absolutely toilet and getting beat most weeks that a 4th place finish to me is impressive. I would be over the flippin' moon this season with a 6th place....even ecstatic, call me silly.

Bit weird people saying stamping on someone's face makes him a "proper defender"

I feel alot of what people are saying you may be slightly taking it out of context. I for one have called him a proper defender, but not for stamping on players head.

He also has pace, strength and would be a pain in the ass to win a header against. Would you worry with a simple ball down the middle now splitting our defence open?

'Great job' which included a lot of shite as well. Look at it objectively.

Please show me where "a lot" of shite happened, as your referencing Villalad subjecting 17/18 season. I agree he should of gone this season, but last season he did a great job.

I look at everything objectively and use hard facts to back up pretty much everything I say. If were referring to game 20 to 24 its a pretty poor run of 5 games over the Christmas period. Outside of that we had 3 draws in a row early in the season, but never went on any mad losing streaks.

Steve Bruce has shown every side we need to see of him to make an assessment, ultimately leaving our defense threadbare, which showed in our results were too bad to allow him to stay.

le tissier has waded in with a very interesting point...if that was his son, he would have found a way to avoid him

    Let it go now.

It wasn't his son though, was it? Its another professional playing against another professional, Mings not wanting look a **** on his debut by falling over and Villa conceding a goal. All of the fans at Villa Park would then have been saying he could of stayed on his feet. The alternative was he could of fell over and been crucified as another defender Villa have signed with no legs, past it, poor defender and mights as well call Laursen out of retirement. Mings needs his own fans to back him. Let the ex pro's, fans of other teams and ex ref's discredit him, thats enough!

This is a flip of a coin argument and both sides are heads. He isn't going to win.

I defended Bruce for the longest time but you have used possibly the only exciting game as an example as if it were standard fare throughout the season.

Bruce needed to go. His 17/18 season had a lot more games than just the 4-1 against Wolves. Short memories of Villa fans?

    Norwich at Home was 4-2.

    Barnsley away 0-3.

    Burton away 0-4.

    Fulham at home 2-1.

    Bristol City at home 5-0.

    Sheff Wednesday away 2-4.

    Sunderland away 0-3.

    Wolves home 4-1.

    Ipswich Town away 0-4.

The worry is if he is now going to be fearful of being aggressive and last ditch defending out of worry of hurting someone or getting slated/penalised.

He will be fine, hes a proper defender. This is part and parcel of his game(again not saying he will be standing on other players head each week), we just need to accept him as a proper old fashioned defender!

For the first time since JT and Chester as a partnership, I feel unworried by our defense and especially the final 10 minutes of us gifting goals away. The next game will prove this as Reading can hardly be used as a yard stick.

  9. I don't believe he did it on purpose and brutal violence isn't needed on the football pitch.

Mings is someone who Villa needs now, we have no other centre back like him. The nasty streak in him could strike fear into forwards playing against us. Were always so nice and even let simple balls in between the CB's to run right through us. I think Villa is a team other players like to play against, thats why we concede so many worldies and players who havent scored a goal in 12 seasons  seem to get it against us. Or young lads playing there first game have the horrible knack of kick starting their career with a nice goal against us.

Mings in the side will help to stop a portion of this, he is only one man but he could "stamp" his authority on the game, no pun intended, like no player since Mellberg.

What do people think will be needed points wise to make 6th?  76?

I presume everyone's guesses will be close. 75 points and a better GD to get it this year cause many teams can end up on same points.

For us to hit that number we need 11 wins out of 16 games.

  11. To slate Brentford after he left but not highlight that there new manager has also turned them around into good form with 3 wins on the bounce.

Brentford with their 8 losses are now only 6 points behind us with a game in hand.

  12. I just wonder if were expecting too much from Dean Smith. Yes he gives attacking football but at the expense of our defense. Were sort of a role reversal to last season where we could defend but not score too many. DS previous record at Walsall and Brentford isn't really increasing the clubs position, just seems a different style of football and ensures the team turn up for the big guns like how Brentford always outplayed Villa with him as boss. Were also turning up for the big games but the teams where points are expected were dropping them to easily.

    Here is a list of the club and finishing positions below;

    Walsall 10th  62   2009/10
      20th 48   2010/11
      19th 50   2011/12
      9th 70   2012/13
      13th 58   2013/14
      14th 59   2014/15

    Brentford 9th 65   2015/16
      10th 64   2016/17
      9th 69   2017/18

His win rate now is pretty much the same as it was at Walsall and at Brentford. 33-35%

I would be very surprised  if he does not receive a ban.

    3 games minimum.

whether it was intentional or not it was still a dangerous act that caused damage to another footballer.

it would be crazy to ban for an accident. unintentional, cannot be given any kind of ban.

Think if we get rid of Grealish says one thing, that the owners stating no one is leaving was rubbish, that were desperate to ease FFP which I don't think is the case when spending 7 mill on a keeper.

I think Jack will stay unless it gets worse, I think all our players who are worth something, have seen the club's new direction and because they love it here are willing to win promotion and risk it all to get villa back in the premiere.

Jack could of gone last season, should of and didn't, I guess we will truly know how much a villa fan jack is come next season. I also do not know anyone who's going to come in and  spend 40-50 million on Jack when spurs are looking to dash 50 mill on David Brooks.

Forget loving it here, for Jack's personal career regardless of his love for Villa will be better served away from Villa. His potential wont be hit at Villa Park. Next year is the Euro's he wont be picked for that playing for Villa.

I think the club wanted him for one last season and his contract signing was to ensure Villa got the best price for him, rather than to see the entire contract out. I think if he leaves its for personal growth rather than the owners chatting rubbish or to ease FFP.

  15. After the Reading game Aston Villa have 43 points out of a possible 90. The final projected points total will currently be 66 points that is points after 46 games. Basing this off last seasons final table will put us 12th.

There is still 48 points to play for giving us a maximum potential points haul of 91 points.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since the appointment of Dean Smith the new projected points total would be 68 points that is points after 46 games. That has included (Before Smith) of 1.25 PPG from Steve Bruce and the current 1.55PPG from Smith. Using 1.55PPG over the remaining 16 games.

Basing this off last seasons final table will put us 11th

Thought for the day: Our maximum achieveable points is only 1 point more than Cardiff finished the season in 2nd with last season.

You could make of it that Smith has us precisely in playoff position form and that we’re still seven points behind because of the bad start.

Point gained on West Brom and Leeds! Let’s get Jack back and make a run for the playoffs. Somehow, I still believe.

Whats an unbelievable thought is that we have won 2 games in the last 10 and were still only 4 potentially 7 points of play offs. Everyone is beating everyone, when Grealish is back we could scrape it, but due to everyone winning everyone there is 4 teams now on the same points as us. We need top 6 to keep getting beat and the teams around us to also drop points, here is the minor miracle we need all that while Villa putting any kind of winning run together that we haven't achieved all season.

    Last 10 games

    2 Wins

    6 Draws

    2 Losses

  17. I hope DS can do well at Villa but its hard to see currently. His track record is of turning a profit on players and not about play offs.

This team should do better. We are better than a tough 2 1 win against bottom of the league and a 0 0 draw against someone floating above relegation. Next season we will be without a +20 goal season player.

Our form is really poor and becoming bottom 5 side based on last 5 or even 10 games.

I hope it all changes when Grealish is back but this seems a deeper issue than 1 man. Winning breeds confidence our confidence has now gone.

Yeah, we're a Championship side and are beating the team 2nd in the top French division to a mediocre signing.  You just reinforced my statement.  Besides PSG, the French league is shite.

You make me wish Villa were French. We would be 2nd in ligue 1 and in the champions league.....cause ligue 1 is shite right.

Hopefully he goes there and scores a few.  We then know we DO have a player on our hands after all and either he comes back here and does well for us next season or someone actually does take him off our hands for a bit of a fee and get 100% of his wages off the book.

I think it is very very telling though that his old manager who got lots of goals out of him, and Hogan tweeted his delight to see arrive, still doesn't seem to fancy him.

Would you fancy any other striker in the league to displace Tammy Abraham in our starting XI from the Championship?
