  1. It was definitely an injury, no way he would of been replaced... he was the best player in the first half...

Regardless of what people think of Ireland, today showed that if lambert if to continue with this diamond formation, Ireland is an integral part of it.

-He is the link man between midfield and attack... there was simply none with him off

-he forces defenders to sit deeper to pick him up which takes a man out of their attacking options

-he makes clever runs in behind (like the one for bannans volley, holmans misplaced pass to him and the ball in from KEA he miscontrolled)

-Most importantly he harasses the opposition from a position very high up the pitch which makes it very hard for teams to settle on the ball and build from the back

-he trys passes others arn't afraid to try (nearly slipped bent through twice today, on another day these stick and its a goal.

Don't get me wrong, he wasn't excellent today, or even very good but he was the best we had out there, working hard for the team and I feel the role he plays for us, specifically in that formation is seriously under appreciated by a large percentage of the fans.

Agree with every word. Although it wasn't one of his best games today his absence second-half left a gaping hole in our midfield. His workrate, drive and passing ability are vitally important and I really fail to understand some of the criticism he comes in for on here.

  2. Judging by the high-tempo style and the amount of closing down of opponents I reckon we're going to see a lot of rotation. It's a long season and some players are going to need a rest. Can Holman keep running around like a man possessed until May? Good to see that we have more depth...not sure about the quality, however.

  3. I think we'll avoid relegation this year and I´m willing to tolerate results like the Everton game as long as there's a clear direction in how we want to go about things. I'm all for the "young and hungry" approach and certainly prefer the style of football which Lambert seems to want to promote. I just hope we have more Newcastle days rather than Everton days. Looking forward to seeing the new signings in action and more excited about all things Villa than I have been in a long long time. Looking forward to the rest of the season.

  4. Anyone else thinking Dunne's absence may be a blessing in disguise ?

I think his absence is a blessing.

I can't understand why this blessing should be "in disguise".

Dunne is an unwatchable, overpaid defender that plays football the way it was played in the 30's of the previous century, belting the ball clear instead of trying and build from the back (that is the continental style play that all the great English clubs adopted since at least 15 years).

Last but not least, he committs one or two banal mistakes every game and he is responsible of the 50% of the goals that we concede.

The Italian Sky TV commentator says always that he seems a pub player and he is absolutely right.

I find this ridiculously harsh. He has played the ball out of defence on many occasions this season and to be fair only really hoofs it when there is nothing else on or it's really necessary. Hoofing is Collins's trademark.

He is not responsible for 50% of the goals we concede. C'mon.....

  5. Dunne was brilliant. Composed, dominant in the air and made some vital interceptions. Given was good but his fondness for punching rather than catching the ball is going to prove costly some day. Hutton needs to adapt and on that display is no better than Cuellar at right back. Warnock was back to his worst today and should be paying Dunne commission for bailing him out on several occassions today.

Delph was disappointing and lacks physical presence and hasn't been very creative at all so far. Bannan was a little lost and only really shines when he drifts into the middle. Bent had an off day and Agbonlahor was positive and a threat to Everton but saw too little of the ball, took his chance well though.

N'Zogbia hasn't impressed me at all so far but I'm willing to wait and see.

Think Ireland looked up for it and would like to see him get more time on the pitch.
