He won’t be world class but if he is deemed good enough to be number 2 for one the biggest clubs in the world he must adequate at least.

Yeah to be fair, he will be adequate, like the rest of our signings I'm sure. Probably won't do anything spectacular but hopefully we'll be steady. Not sure Grealish will accept another mediocre season, but oh well.

He’s got 100 caps mate. For one of the best national teams in the world.

And who was his competition? Cabellero? Doesn't get anywhere near the team now.

You are right. Let's stick with Nyland and Kalinic this season 🤦🏻‍♂️

You're right. Playing a handful of games for your National team makes you a class GK 🤦‍♂️

Unsurprising, considering he had been de gea's back up during that time. You don't get 90 caps for Argentina unless you are a pretty decent GK.

Are Argentina known for their GK's? can you name a world class Argentina GK of the past? Nyland has 28 caps for Norway and Kalinic has 19 caps for the current World Cup Finalists

Doesn't he have 90 odd caps for Argentina?

Who we getting better than that for £8m?

Hasn't played for Argentina for 3 years. Plenty of GK's ahead of him. Maybe he'll become number one if he's playing regularly? Got about 4 GK's ahead of him atm

Maybe I should have phrased it as struggling to understand why anybody would be against this signing?

I'd take him over no one/ our current no.2/3/4/5 (we like to buy GK's 😂), 100%. Many I'd have instead of him, disappointed we couldn't get better or didn't spend that 8mill else where. That's my view

    £7m according to Marca.

For a 100 cap international goalkeeper. It’s nothing in 2020. It’s a snip. Let the owners worry about how much we’re spending.

Your last paragraph makes no sense. We’re not spending a fortune. It’s £7m.

We need a better number 2. We’re getting a very very good one for a relatively cheap price.

    what’s not to like?

You either don't understand or don't believe that a backup GK with less than a year left on his contract is expensive at £7mill.

We're not going to get past that so there's no point in having a discussion. Fine he's a great signing and a bargain and can't wait to see him play when we can finally get back into the stadium.

For future reference, every player we sign will be better than someone in the squad, so copy and paste what I've put that for every player we sign.

You talk like it is your money! 😂Firstly you don't know how much money we actually have to spend, the amount of money we will recoup from player sales and how much money the alternative options would cost. Friedal and Reina were still decent keepers in their late 30's, as was Peter Shilton in days gone by. If the club feel it is good value and doesn't negatively impact on other transfers then who are we to say if it acceptable or not?!

Not at all. You don't need to be an insider in the club to know £8mill spent means £8mill less on the budget. We've got a budget of £Xmill and I don't think we're spending it as well as we could. As fans, we are allowed to have an opinion and just because some of us are not overly happy with every single signing, just because it's a signing, doesn't mean it's wrong.

It's a lot because you're assuming that both Wilson/Romero will sit on the bench, which definitely isn't the case for the first few months of the season...

Which is exactly why I'd prefer to get players who are an upgrade on those positions i.e Aarons, Edouard, Rashica, Martinez etc. There's no definite's they'll blow their competition out the water, but I think we've got a good enough squad to take risk on players like we did on Douglas Luiz, Adama, Gueye, Amavi etc. that could take us to the next level. Our team is good enough now in my opinion we don't need to be like Bournemouth and over pay for average players

It's all relative to a degree though isn’t it.. We could always wait 9 months until he is on a free but if Heaton does not come back quickly or perform well straight away then we may be a championship team by then.

From what I saw of him he is a solid keeper that appears to be available at a good price, we definitely need someone like him so why not him, the length left on his contract probably does mirror the reason he is only being touted at £8m...

Yes, I wouldn't say wait until next season, he probably would have better offers. I'm saying considering Heaton 33 (£8mill), Martinez 27 (Maybe £15mill), Ramsdale 22 (£18mill), Romero with 9 months left on his contract is not a good deal at £8mill.

Whilst it's nice to improve the squad as a whole, my concern is by Christmas our starting eleven could easily look like, assuming we buy Wilson (20m), Watkins (28m), Cash (16m), Romero (8m):

                                Heaton

    Cash/Guilbert Konsa Mings Targett

                                  Luiz

                      McGinn Hourihane

             Watkins   Wesley    Grealish

£72mill spent is a lot for a team that looks not massively better than what we had last season.

I don't think he's strictly coming in as a backup though, presumably he would be initially covering those first however many games that Heaton is out for but if he acquits himself, than it's his spot to lose when Heaton returns and we've got ourselves in the enviable position of having two decent options for one position.  Perhaps also with one eye on Heaton's injury, if it persists or worst case scenario he's not able to fully recover from it, we won't have to scramble for a very short-term fix as we did with Reina.

Very true, and I hope he comes in and can be as good as he has been for United because he's not a bad GK. Maybe I just really rate Heaton, but I think Heaton will be no.1 next season, which is why I don't like the idea of spending first choice GK money on a potential backup. Personally, I wanted Reina back so be steady until Heaton was back. And focus the rest of the funds on 3-4 quality players (ST, RW,LW, CM). Looks like we'll be similar to last year and spread the costs across improving the squad. We will have a better squad than last season, and I guess it's less of a risk than massively improving the starting XI, but potentially being left short with a few injuries.

Have to admit I’m struggling to understand why anybody wouldn’t be happy with this Romero deal. Unless they think he is a crap goalkeeper.

The thing is as a fan, you don't have to be happy about every signing, that on the surface, would improve our squad. You don't have to be happy with signing Jota, Lansbury, Nakamba, Samatta, Hause, Hogan, McCormack, Tshibola, Bree, Nyland. Just because they appear to be "better than what we've got", does not mean you have to be happy with them.

But we have other priorities in improving the first XI. Tom Heaton with Romero as backup is absolutely brilliant for a club in our position. To improve our first XI by buying a better goalkeeper might cost a LOT more. Or there might not be better options available.

We're getting a very good Number 2 goalkeeper for a relative snip in a position we already have a very good first choice in.

It's like complaining that we're spending £10m on a very good player who plays Jack's position when we've already got Jack there because we're not improving the first XI. We don't need to in that position.

Okay Romero is a good back up to Heaton, agreed. Maybe a very good backup.

£8mill is not a snip or even a good price for a 33 year old back up GK with 9 months left on his contract, we are overpaying. You'll probably struggle (I may be wrong) to find a team that's spent more than that on a Backup GK in the prem in the last few years.

£8mill on a backup GK is not a sign we are focused on other areas at all. Comparatively it's a lot of money for a back up GK, if we were focused on other areas, we'd get a loan or let Steer start the season. In simple terms, Watkins + Romero = Edouard for example (it's obviously not that simple but you get my point).

And it's not like complaining we're spending £10mill on a very good player who plays Jack's position, it's like complaining we're spending £80mill on a very good player who plays Jack's position, except we can't just move the other player to another position, so one has to go on the bench.

  14. 1 minute ago, Stevo985 said:

    He's a backup. £7m is nothing in 2020, even for a keeper.

And he's good enough to challenge Heaton for a starting point.

Even if it's short term, I don't really see the negative. He is an absolutely gigantic improvement on Nyland. That's the comparison.

He is a gigantic improvement on Nyland, agreed. Where people don't understand my opinion is that, yes the players we are signing are better than at least the squad players that we have. But there's absolutely nothing wrong with wanting clear improvement on the starting XI. You're not a bad person for believing there's a lot better options out there.

We'll have failed massively if we sign a goalkeeper that secures a first choice spot for 6 years?  This seems like an odd metric.

The idea of the metric is if the best we can do in 6 years is a 39 year old Romero, then somethings gone wrong. Whether that's relegation fodder or Championship. We're not going to be challenging Europe with him, although that's just my opinion

  16. 2 minutes ago, Mjvilla said:

Well, we are working within a budget with many areas need improving. £18.5m on ramsdale was it? This is £10m cheaper. The idea being we would have £10m to spend elsewhere. We still get a hugely respected and experienced goalkeeper for the cheaper price.

I don't think Martinez wanted to leave, either that or arsenal didn't want to sell.

Perhaps not but Arsenal are keen on Raya from Brentford, Martinez wants first team football and Leno is very good. So not out of the question.

  17. 4 minutes ago, lexicon said:

Why? Friedel was still excellent for us at that age and we could develop at least a couple of good young goalies to take over in that time.

Yeah but you're comparing a guy who played 450 prem games to someone who's played 7. Just because there's an example of a player who's played at the top level at 39, doesn't mean everyone will do it

  18. Just now, Mjvilla said:

I think this is the key bit. Suggests to me that perhaps the hierarchy aren't confident, certainly not of reaching his levels this side of Christmas.

Agreed but you get Martinez, Ramsdale or anyone a bit younger and you don't have to worry about that. We'll be looking for a new no.1 within 2 years.

  19. Don't see the point in this at 33, would of rather got someone we could develop under Heaton to eventually take over as no.1. Oh well, hope he does well in his 3 games (assuming Heaton comes back okay)

    Like who?

For me Rashica, Edouard, Aarons and McKinnie (now gone Juve) all very inspiring. Shame if none come off and instead it's Wilson, Watkins Cash. Think they'll do okay but we could be more ambitious. Maybe they're all unrealistic for where we are at now.
