We certainly do. A professional football team must operate at peak fitness - so what have we been doing up to now?

I mean most fitness and conditioning is done during pre season and ours was a total mess, since we've had multiple injures with players not up to speed and lots of travelling between countries, our fitness being poor this season isn't really a shock I don't think

I went to Reading away on a Tuesday night. We hadn't won an away game for 15 months and we got a last minute penalty. Absolute scenes and  for me it was the start of the fight back.

I was also there, what a great night that was!

I think the DM article is likely to be nonsense. Where would they have got their information from? Have we ever leaked stuff to the DM before?

The fact that it's an article in the Daily Mail is enough to prove its nonsense

    Here's a replay

    https://streamja.com/oovVl

A few frames before and after. It's basically heading directly across the pitch from left to right, so it wasn't on track to go in if there were no players on the pitch, but it's certainly heading more towards the goal than away from it, and if Bowen isn't impeded, he's got a one on one with Martinez from a fairly decent angle coming in from the edge of the box. the quality is dire as I've just taken them from that replay, but from the positioning, if it's a foul it's pretty clearly a red IMO. You could make an argument about it being soft and too soft to even give the foul, but I don't think there's any justification to give the foul and not the red.

Thing is, if it's a foul, I think it has to be a red, but am I the only one who can't see a foul there at all? There's laughably little contact and screams of their guy getting in between the defender and the ball and falling over, hoping there might have been a touch.

Honestly if that's enough "contact" for a foul and red card why doesn't every single corner end up with a penalty? There's more contact on all 15 players inside the box at a corner than there was on the west ham player in that instance

Ok if you know the above tell me what metrics they are using. ?

You might want to scroll up to the paper I linked about measuring fatigue in footballers.

Be very interested to hear what stats they used to decide Luiz could only play for 68 minutes.

The only time fitness stats are used is pre season.ask any pro footballer if you don't believe me.

Someone should tell the club, because they are paying a company a ton of money to make the players wear those monitors in every game, what a rip off!

Hell, 5 years ago when I played football addidas made a boot that had a tracker in it that recorded your top speed, distance covered, number of sprints, and a ton of other metrics, and that was £100 from sports direct, if you think Premier League football teams worth hundreds of millions are still going by the "how fit do you feel" approach to deciding player fitness you are living in the past

  6. Just to confirm having read through the topic, the main issue with Smith now is that he makes too many subs, too early, and "if a player can play for 60 minutes they can play for 90", so should never be subbed unless we are losing.

Its been an interesting read, I always assumed that fatigue got worse the longer you played, that football is an endurance sport because most of the "only 10k" you run is in high intensity or sprints and not making enough "proactive" subs was the main thing Smith has been criticised for the last few years

What kind of flight do you think he's getting🙃

Business class sure, but exercise equipment, waiters, Michelin star chefs?

I was imagining a private plane myself, although possibly a slight exaggeration but if I was earning 50/60/70k a week I'm not gonna be skimping on a flight to go see my dad in hospital. I don't think he was sweating over whether to pay the £75 for extra legroom seats

He's training today, so I guess he must have left Argentina on Wednesday night or the early hours of Thursday.

It must be incredibly difficult for him (and the other South American players) right now - it's an eighteen hour trip each way and he's had to make that journey several times this season already. I'm not sure what today's wacky regulations are - but certainly last time out he also spent time training in Croatia and isolating in a hotel room for ten days away from his family which can't be easy - with the stress of his dad being unwell on top of that, it must be a very unsettling time.

Whilst I agree with this, I'd imagine 18 hours on a plane for a Premier league footballer is a somewhat different experience to 18 hours on a plane for you and I. They'll have exercise equipment, Michelin star chefs, waiters, deluxe beds etc. Obviously last time having to quarantine and everything that happened would have been v stressful, but in general I don't think the flight time is that bad for them - I'm not sure of the time difference but if its big I'd say that'll be the bigger issue

but yes back on point sometimes I crave consistency and even draws rather than a constant rollercoaster of random results.

I mean pretty much the only teams that offer that are the top 2 or 3 and Norwich

  10. What is this talk about him "not being given a chance", he hasn't played 90 minutes in about a year and has spent every minute of his time here either injured or unfit, now he's meant to be straight into the team and first name on the team sheet? What's happening?!

The bottle thing is true but I think Sanson threw it at Shakespeare not Deano. He has a right to not be happy, he’s not been given a chance and he actually looked really good on his last outing.

Can’t help but start to think about what a different manager could get from our squad.

What gives him the right? He's literally been injured pretty much since he joined. Last time he played for us he managed about 10 minutes before getting injured again, now he's throwing a wobbly because he was available for the first time in months and not picked straight away. Bore off

I agree, but there were two eye witnesses in that thread. Not saying it's a big thing, emotions are high in a defeat, but it needs sorting out.

I can find eye witnesses that "saw" Trump votes being destroyed to rig the election.

Edit. It may be true of course, and if it is then it does need sorting out (although I think there are frequently arguments after a defeat) but there's a huge chance its completely made up as most things online are. People seem to give more credence to Facebook/twitter comments rather than actual evidence these days which is why there are so many bots and trolls around

If that is true then there is unrest in the dressing room; Sanson has a right to be pi55ed watching our midfield last night.

To repeat others earlier in the thread the rumours are that Smith has two games, I thought they'd give him until Christmas but results are bad.

I like Smith and hoped he'd be a success here but now I feel the job is too much for him.

There are better managers out there...

We signed Sanson in January and he's not been able to put in 90 minutes for us yet. He has not got a "right to be pissed watching our midfield", he needs to be able to play 30 minutes without getting injured before demanding to be in the team.

This doesn't sound good, obviously not a happy camp

He needs to get the squad in to sort things out ASAP.

I hate the "no smoke without fire" expression. It gives people carte blanche to believe any tripe they read, I'd wager a lot of people that believe the vaccine is going to kill off the population in 2 years probably read it, thought "that's bs" then read it a few more times and figured "well, no smoke without fire, I'll pass on the vaccine, personal choice innit".

It's 2021, the internet exists. There is a lot of smoke without fire

people are fine with a mid table finish so long as we don't lose to any shit teams along the way...

And play well every week regardless of injuries or any other mitigating circumstances

Whilst the Grealish pain suggests a cautious approach to player fandom, I can’t help it with Martinez. He’s so good it’s unreal, but I can’t see him moving on yet. We’re in the ascendency and we’ve backed him in his international escapades. He looks happy at Villa and I think he appreciates the chance we gave him. I think he’s here for another couple of years at least.

I think the key difference for me is Grealish is a superstar, popular outside football, a global brand, and you just can't maintain that at Villa as we are now (in a few years hopefully!), Emi doesn't seem that way. He seems a genuine guy just happy to be playing football and winning trophies (albeit for Argentina). He's had a taste of being at an "elite" (according to the media) club and knows that playing regularly is more important

Fingers crossed he's here for the rest of his career because I love the guy

  17. It's worth remembering that the best thing for a players development is to play with players slightly ahead of where they are, that allows them to push themselves to get to that level. If he's struggling to get into the Ipswich first team then he's probably at the right spot, if he can work hard and nail down a spot by January then we could look to get him to a higher level after Jan, if not then he stays and hopefully can nail down a spot by the end of the season. That'll be good progress for a young player.

Not everyone is Rooney and not everyone currently playing in the PL was playing mens football consistently at 18, let the lad develop

  18. Ahh I knew this hyperbole would be out as soon as he made the mistake. It was a mistake, every defender makes them, including Mings.

Not 10 minutes later he bailed out Konsa after Konsa got caught on the ball and dispossessed. Maybe everyone thinks Konsa is a better defender because when he makes a mistake he's got Mings to cover for him, Mings doesn't have anyone so mistakes are more costly

  19. He's really growing into the team now, last season he looked like a young guy learning his trade, he's looking like a proper PL player now. He's not dominating games yet, but the rate he's progressing you wouldn't bet against him next season

    Good one.

Bailey is our new Jack, just different. Jack was so silky, gliding around players, the weighting of his passes never get mentioned, so much to like (and unlike as it went), Bailey is superfast, even more tricky, hits a better dead ball, before he got here he looked a much better finisher too, very different but hopefully, even more effective for us.

I want him to succeed so badly for us, if only to see @JAMAICAN-VILLAN moonwalking around VT like a bad mother ******.

I mean, it's been mentioned in virtually every conversation from fans and pundits when talking about Jack for about 3 years, but other than that I wholeheartedly agree!

Could be worse, Spurs are fining Lo Celso and Romero because both players weren't even supposed to be with the Argentina squad for these matches.

At least we came to an agreement with our players, even if it was completely pointless in the end.

You have to wonder if they'd have taken the same stance if it was, say, Kane and Son however. Easy to risk pissing off players that never play for you anyway

It's going to be a big ask for them to be ready for Everton. If they arrive in Croatia tomorrow (flight time plus 5 hours time difference) they won't be allowed back into the UK until the actual day of the Everton game. Having not trained with the rest of the squad for the best part of a month. Extremely unlikely to say the very least.

But the whole point of Croatia was so they could still train, I'd imagine we'll send a coach or someone out to train them for a few days until they can rejoin. Even if Buendia can only start from the bench Martinez will definately be fine to play

No way players sit there filling out forms at the airport like most people have to.

AFA will have done all their forms.

That's irrelevant, those forms are legal documents, it's 100% their responsibility to make sure they're filled in correctly

If they're stuck in quarantine because they lied (or allowed someone else to lie on their behalf) on their forms then they deserve just as much flak as anyone else for it.

Edit just to add, it's not like these are hugely complicated forms, they are the same forms that literally everyone has to fill in. They take 5 minutes maximum, there's absolutely no excuse for not doing them yourself, pampered millionaire footballer or not

I can't understand why this wasn't picked up earlier.

Brazil don't call up English based players because they have to isolate for up to 14 days after their departure from the uk on arrival in country.

Argentina playing Brazil, in Brazil,  with 4 players that will have arrived from the UK less than 14 days ago.

How did the club, players, and press not pick up that this was going to happen? I can understand the Argentinian FA thinking they can grease some palms to get away with it,  but it's a very bizarre situation. Proper comedy of errors.

This, surely when this deal was being worked out that they would play 2 games then come home somebody would have noticed that the 2nd one was in Brazil?!
