Chelsea and maybe Bournemouth (?) aside, I don’t know of many other teams that bought that many more players than us.

It was time to trim the squad and we’ll trim the squad even further in the Summer, replacing the players that leave with actual big budget quality.

So what if Watkins gets injured. I imagine Ings would only have got injured himself at some point anyway. Also, he’s immobile and apart from the odd appearance of the bench, barely features.

Sanson and Nakamba aren’t up to it and weren’t needed.

Like I say, Id have got rid of a few more if I could. This squad hasn’t managed to finish in the top half or win a trophy over the last couple of years. Time to let go of a few and bring in players that might help us actually achieve something.

Correct about Ings saw he was injured already for West Ham on Monday night as not in squad although I thought he’d be cup tied anyway as he was captain when we lost to Stevenage. Yes disappointed not to replace him but as you suggest he will be more prone to injury at his age, Watkins is rarely injured, we could of kept Archer but he hardly took any opportunities given to him. it’s a risk but obviously a considered risk by the club.

its a bit of an odd rule but correct decision.

basically if he had fouled him properly - like he could have grabbed him by the throat if he wanted  -  and not even let him reach the box he would still have been sent off but no penalty

Is he only banned for one game? Says in fantasy football he’s back from suspension for our next game but I thought a straight red was 3 games?

  3. His game management really doesn’t bother me, he knows where the line is, other players have done it to us for years. Looked like a player with full confidence and it resonated to the back 4 and rest of the team. Feel like making him captain was the final piece of the jigsaw for him. Love him. Best keeper we’ve had since the 90’s

  4. He’s not going to set the world alight at his age, (sorry Danny your thinning hair is showing now too) but he’s a proven PL player he would comfortably get 20 goals a season if he started every game, he’s a natural goal scorer, like Bamford yesterday he just needs one half opportunity and he’d score. He’s not going to run down lost causes like Watkins but he definitely has a role to play. Would not sell esp to another PL team.

He’s an ok player. Definitely PL quality but if we want to push up the table, I’m afraid it’s likely he’ll need to be replaced with better.

Players like Cash, Buendia, Konsa, Luiz, Ings and Bailey aren’t going to push us into the top 8. We need better all over the pitch for that, which is what Emery will have identified early.

I think all those players can be good enough, there all proven PL players, with some coaching there’s no reason too think they can’t, look at Newcastle for example, you don’t have to have a complete squad overhaul that would do more damage than good imo. I think Luiz is a class player, and will improve further, my only wish is he gets better at not giving away cheap fouls, because most his fouls are border line but go against them he needs to learn to disguise them better.

  6. Tbf Neville getting stuck but he normally doesn’t speak badly about us so I’m not going to go in on him.

MOTM could be either Martinez, Young, Kamara, Bailey even the new kid saved a goal (just)… we were out played and over ran. Yes we rode our luck and yes we take the p**s wasting time but other teams have done that against us for years. I‘m more than happy to get some luck and give some steel back to other teams.

id even say the ref was ok today and we probably got a few more decisions for once.

    have a good weekend Villians.

Either him or Young for MOTM for me.  Such a classy player.

With Mings and Konsa on the ball and Leeds players pressing, I was worried.  Ball in to Kamara, same situation - just not worried at all!  Lovely work for the first goal too.  Baller.

Could be boubacar, Martinez, or young to be fair. We need 3 or 4 players to have outstanding games every game, normally it’s one or two. That’s how you win games.

You'd better prepare yourself then. Looking forward to this thread moving to Other Football, personally.

Goes in the Balaban, Djemba Djemba and Salifou category.

    The problem is extremes.

If you're serious about qualifying for europe you simply can't go from playing off the park a near top 4 team (who won 4-0 away tonight) to producing that for first 60 minutes at home to a bottom 3 team.

Yes probably a few of them are leggy and Wolves had 24 hours more rest but it's the same for all sides over xmas and I can't see anyone else putting in those extreme performances within 3 days. Well probably Everton aswell but they're s*** so that answers that example.

There's still a mentality issue lurking inside the club but have to trust Emery with all his top level experience to identify and slowly weed it out.

I mean a derby against Wolves is never going to be an easy game, we played bad and we still got a point, a couple of decisions that normally go against us haven’t gone against them, and we could of snatched it at the end. I think a mentality issue is a bit strong when we’ve beaten so good teams of late including Man U and spuds. It’s a hard league we’re improving lots after a bad year with Gerrard.

  10. Just watched the miss on the highlights on SSN app, great ball from Ings, wasn’t as bad as everyone made out was still a lot to do. A player like Bailey isn’t going to be a world beater every game and today wasn’t his day. Still has a good game in him every other game, a world class player has a great game every game, we can’t attract that calibre of player. He’ll no doubt play well next week to make amends.

  11. I’m in the camp where I don’t really like it to the extreme we’ve been doing it, yes do a bit of it, dive on the ball emi, make 3 subs and the odd tactical foul but the whole taking 30 seconds to take a goal kick or feigning injury is a bit too much.

But saying this, if Brighton go and score in the last minute I’m screaming at the TV, why are we not time wasting you incompetent clearing in the woods so loud the kid and the dog are crying.

Took his goal well yesterday.  Could be a real asset for us as a goal scoring midfielder, arriving late in the box and has shown he has great composure to stick it in the net.

We all on hate on Gerrard but he would have picked up quite a lot of info from him, his goal yesterday was quite Gerradesk… arriving late and hammering it home. Hope he shapes into half the player Gerrard was and we have a player on our hands. With some tactics and positivity from Emery, hoping he can kick in and become a top premier league player.

I couldn't see the game, but I've been hearing from Man U fans that he's a total shithouse and they hate him. What did I miss?

Ironically they were shouting Argentina… which must of surprised him and spurred him on lol. If they think he’s bad then that little evil midget they’ve got at the back needs looking at, nasty little CB

  14. Unbelievable really that he was MOTM imo today and he won’t be in the England squad. And the slab head didn’t even get off the bench today for the losing team not because he’s injured because he’s deemed not good enough to play and will start at the World Cup. Make it make sense

Honestly I keep telling people that this is a different Premier League season.

Almost any team can turn over any team at the moment.

Only real standout teams this season are City and Arsenal as it stands.

When I say that, i don't mean other teams are necessarily " weak " . I mean quite the opposite; the League is just very competitive now.

    Everybody else is potential FOOD!

Yeah and funny how we drew with one of the stand out teams and lost narrowly to the other. Yet we get thrashed by Bournemouth, palace, Fulham and newcastle!

I appreciate the sentiment of this and I know it's generally the response when anyone thinks it's unrealistic for us to sign a player now, but I still can't see it specifically in the case of Torres. Bigger, more attractive clubs than Villa haven't been able to sign him yet and I don't think Emery alone can make it happen here. Furthermore I think everyone is in agreement that Villa need to be wiser with how they spend money, and in the case of Torres you're talking €55-60 million just to pay his release clause, to only improve one position in a squad and in turn limit how much you can spread elsewhere.

I agree in some sense but the same could be said about Boubacar, he was on a free and just breaking into the French national team, he still came to us, we still have some pull. I’m sure Emery wouldn’t have taken the job if he didn’t think he could or would be able to improve the squad. We need to stop thinking that £50 million on a player is above us, that’s where we need to be. We sold Jack for £100 million. Players are huge investments nowadays yes but I’d rather have one or two of those a season than try and find bargin bucket signings for that inevitably don’t pay off and we waste money anyway.

I would imagine there's no way that we're signing him. He's a local lad there that has been courted by numerous top sides who have been unable to prise him away thus far, when he eventually does move it'll be to a club in that upper bracket.

I disagree. I’m sure emery has come here to attract those type of players and has been promised a budget for it. If he was managing players of that calibre he will want to match that if not better it. I think his connection to these types of players will be used and utilised. We need to press on now and attract higher quality players or we’ll just be stuck with performances like yesterday
