A lot of the problem is the lack of communication between the actual incident happening and the decision being made - IMO it would benefit the crowd to know more about the decision making process like they do in rugby.

I agree once the decision has been made then maybe doesn't need to be announced like in the video but possibly it is worth a try to see what the feedback is like.

Might benefit the crowd more, but the main problem is the subjectivity regarding what a foul actually is.

The two penalty shouts in the Brighton game basically highlight that - in real time, the referee thinks that one is and one isn’t. There’s not enough in either for someone to definitively say “you got that one wrong” (although, for me, neither is a penalty) so the original decision stands both times.

I think that’s probably correct as far as VAR is concerned, but the nature of that subjectivity means fans just get more annoyed.

They probably need to sack it off apart from factual things like offside and maybe violent conduct not spotted or something.

Their fans are really weird. Already this week I've been reading that Emery only tries when he's against Arsenal and the usual stuff about the referees and the Premier league favouring Man City - today they're convinced that United have rested Bruno Fernandes because they desperately want to play him against them to help City win the league.

Paranoid, pointy, weirdos with a chip on their shoulder and a massive inferiority complex manifesting as ego.

No wonder they identify with Arteta.

You've seen our media thread where there’s a global conspiracy against Aston Villa, right? :D

Henderson’s shot save percentage is 62%. Onana’s is over 75%. That’s a pretty significant difference.

Onana is also much better with the ball at his feet which you need in a modern keeper.

You’ve just looked at “Crystal Palace” there, eh? We can run with it though.

The problem with a lot of stats is that they have no context. So Man Utd may face more shots than any other side, but how many of their shots faced are from outside the area because they don’t close down? How many are from an angle rather than central? etc etc.

As a very brief glance, goalkeeping stats use PSxG/SoT (I lol’d a bit) to demonstrate how likely shots which are on target are to lead to goals. Aston Villa are at 0.35 (highest in the division) whereas Man Utd are at 0.27 (2nd lowest in the division). This roughly shows that per shot on target faced, Villa “should” concede more often than Man Utd. It also shows that Man Utd (Onana), whilst facing lots of shots, aren’t actually facing generally more difficult shots. If anything, he’s facing easier shots which he should save more often than not.

The three keepers up there for this are Martinez, Kaminski and Vicario - all have been largely heralded this season.

I think he’s been decent overall considering what’s in front of him.

Put a good well organised defence in front of him and he’ll go back to looking like he did at Inter.

Decent enough. A £40m+ keeper? One of the best in the league? Not for me. Passable top half, sure.

You’d have some convincing to do to persuade me that Man Utd’s defensive record would be worse if they swapped Onana for Dean Henderson.

Before this match Man U had conceded fewer goals than we had and it’s not down to their amazing defence. Whenever I’ve watched them it’s been Onana making reflex saves. I guess when you’re facing so many shots each match you’re bound to make a few mistakes though.

“A few mistakes” is some understatement.

In just his last 3 games, he’s passed the ball to the opposition to score (against Sheff Utd), given away a daft penalty to concede 2 points (Burnley) and now not made a relatively basic save (granted, no impact on the result).

They’ve conceded 15 in their last 6 and that includes Bournemouth, Sheff Utd, Burnley and Palace.

Their defence is pretty wank and Onana is a big part of that, even if he makes some saves sometimes.

Looking at the goal that was disallowed again, I think they've got that one right - Holjund is nowhere near the ball and affects the keepers ability to deal with it - I hadn't really had a good look at it when it happened and had assumed he'd nudged the keeper and touched the ball - he doesn't get within about a foot of it.

He doesn’t foul the keeper, though. If that’s a defender rather than a goalkeeper, a foul is never being given. It’s incredibly soft.

Na, he’s kept the score down in loads of matches. Man U face the most shots of any team other than Sheffield and Onana keeps them in matches week after week.

And yet he can’t even get a hand to a shot from 25 or so yards which he has a clear sight of and which barely moves from the middle of the goal.

Palace should be out of sight by now.

Will the jammiest team in football jammy it up again?

    Ah.

    No they won't.

In fairness, I’m not sure Man Utd’s goal should’ve been disallowed.

That was Big Yellow Taxi by Joni Mitchell, a song in which Joni complains they paved paradise to put up a parking lot, a measure which actually would have alleviated traffic congestion on the outskirts of paradise, something which Joni singularly fails to point out, perhaps because it doesn't quite fit in with her blinkered view of the world. Nevertheless, nice song.

It was actually the cover by Counting Crows. They did it because it’s a nice song - you big negative Jessie! 😾

It’s this type of nonsense that annoys normal supporters. If Havertz punched the keeper in the face and went down holding his hand would you say it’s not a dive because there was clearly contact?

The rule should be who instigated the contact. Maybe a dive is the wrong terminology, simulation is better.

It's the sort of thing Grealish did for his entire Villa career and we never had a problem with it.

(Granted, I don't think he won many penalties - more just loads of free kicks).
