  1. I think I am going to struggle to continue supporting Villa after reading the General's thread. It's embarassing and I don't want to be associated with some of these idiots. People jumping to conclusions and acting like the McCleish talk is gospel.

    We don't deserve these owners.

Staggering how many people seem to have utter faith in the press and treat everything written as the truth - no matter how stupid or groundless it may be.

  2. C'mon Learner says nothing but there are other people who work at Villa,do you all seriously think that nothing is ever going to get leaked out ? if not you need to wake up and get with the real world.....

I need to get with the real world? Coming from someone who is happy to believe what they read in the press?

  3. Not saying he is better but its got to the stage of "who wants the Villa job" ? we are getting desperate as each day goes and another manager turns us down, what is it ? is that Learner wants the club run on a tight budget ? i don't know but something aint right........

Of course, that is based on the assumptions you and other people have been fed through the media. The same media who, in all honesty, haven't got a **** clue about what's gone on behind closed doors in the past week.

Yep. I bet Randy & co have know for a good couple of months that they may be replacing Houllier, and will have developed a list of names some time back. Now they're working through them. The press are just doing what they always do - guessing, and trying to sell papers.

I really wish more people would understand this, particularly as this week has worn on. But people seem to be getting worse in drawing conclusions and taking as fact what is reported by the media. It's extremely frustrating.

In fairness to the media/newspapers though, it has worked a treat with us Villa fans I'm afraid to say.

So what youre saying dont believe the press in nothing they say where in fact they can feed good info like he JOL appointment from the independent.

In all the press stories about the Villa manager, how many direct quotes have there been from Villa Park about the situation?

  5. Looks like its going to be Martinez and i never knew he was just 37,he looks 10 years older, must be all the stress.....it was great that Randy cancelled Mclarens interview because of us lot ;-)
is mcClaren any worse than coyle or martinez though really? I dont think he is not that i want any of them personally

I don't think McLaren would be all that bad as some make out. His time abroad will have made him a much wiser manager I'm sure. Martinez has probably shown enough to merit a bigger job, but still quite a bit of a risk. Coyle is Scottish, and while the Scots are generally shit at playing the game, they do seem to have the knack of managing teams.

  6. Apparently the new manager will be announced at a confrence this friday?

    That's what i've been told.

Yeah, and the name you'll hear announced is Carlo Ancelotti. I stake my reputation on it.

    You have a reputation? :D

Hope you're right though! Would be a very nice surprise.

  7. It seems to me that MM is hinting that a)he is a 'big' name that wont disappoint and b)he's a dark horse that isn't one of the 3 or 4 we're all talking about. The only person I can think of would be Scolari, is that too mental a thought?

    Kevin Keegan :D

  8. I reckon we might give Laursen a chance that would definitely be a shock appointment

Are you absolutely mad? No chance what so ever... Maybe as a coach, but as manager? now that is just stuipide.

Laursen said as much himself too.

  9. Why Would Anyone Want The Villa Job?

With the pushing of Gerrard Houllier out the door on medical grounds, a new broom is required at Villa Park for what must be one of the least inspiring positions in the Premiership.

Since winning the old European Cup - a truly fantastic achievement it must be said - Villa have continued to underwhelm with the only the odd glimmer of hope during the periods of Graham Taylor, David Platt and Tony Daley and the early days of John Gregory. Martin O'Neil was supposedly their own much cliched Messiah but even he could not muster a finish above sixth place and one must wonder what any manager taking the job can hope to achieve despite their tradition, excellent stadium and both loyal and large fan base.

The top six places next season would look fairly clear cut with the twin clubs from Manchester, both of North Londons' finest and both Liverpool and Chelsea. Despite much wailing and gnashing of teeth from those from the second city, ninth place was achieved in the Premiership by Villa this season. Assuming the prediction on the top six is correct, that means that any prospective candidate can only hope to achieve an improvement of two places before hitting their glass ceiling.

Randy Lerner is by all accounts a decent Chairman, he is also no fool and he knows that even an investment of 50-100 million would do little to guarantee a top four finish. That being the case then why even bother trying? Steady Champions League revenues have meant that it is essentially a closed shop save for the odd slip up from Liverpool and now the entry of Manchester City with their oil rich benefactors.

Mark Hughes is touted as a preferred candidate and a good one he would be. One would wonder however why Hughes would risk his reputation further after his misguided acceptance of the City job. With Fulham decent results are seen as a positive and an enhancement to his credentials, he also has the Europa League to look forward to and the hope of one of the big guns swooping should he do well. At Villa he can realistically achieve little that they have not done in the past few seasons and the truth is he can only either maintain the status quo or disappoint, it is a highly unattractive job.

For Allardyce at West Ham, the only way is up, Hodgson took on a relegation threatened West Brom and saved them whilst Dalglish replaced him at Anfield and took on a fallen and wounded club that he can resurrect. The Chelsea job will presumably come with a hefty cheque book and for whomever is fool hardy enough to take over from Ferguson, well it is still ManYoo after all.

For anyone taking over at Villa Park however one would surely have to ask 'why?'

  10. i really hope we can look forward to the success of finishing 12th, 11th, 11th, 7th and 14th!

Maybe we should go for Avram Grant, he's won much more than any of them....he is actually Hapoel Tel Aviv's most successful manager!

    :winkold:

It's very difficult to know who will be a success isn't it? Many people want a manager that has won plenty of honours, but that brings no guarantees... look at Houllier. Ron Saunders on the other hand had won next to nothing before coming to Villa.

  11. McClaren did an average job at Boro, awful job with England, excellent job with Twente and awful job at Wolfsberg. Hence not good enough.

Hughes did an excellent job with Wales, excellent job with Blackburn, average job at Citeh, good job with Fulham. Hence worth a shot.

Coyle and done excellent jobs at Burnley and Bolton, but im not sure he's ready yet.

Moyes has done a good job at Preston and an excellent job with Everton. I would love him here, i just dont think it will happen.

Martinez has done good enough with Swansea and Wigan, but its way to soon at the moment.

Benitez is most experienced, but i feel Fergie has cracked him.

So Hughes or Moyes for me.

Pretty good analysis there I reckon.

  12. I think we should give an English or dare I say it Scottish manager a try. We've experimented with foreign managers now and for the money forked out they haven't delivered. We need a manager in there who understands the English support, media, expectations and isn't just there to enjoy their salary.

Yes. What we need is Kevin Keegan.

  13. Aren't any of you weary of judging Ancelotti purely on what he has won and perhaps ignoring the circumstances in which these successes were achieved? 2 league titles in 10 years of managing Juve, Milan and Chelsea has to be cause for some element of doubt surely? When you look at the Chelsea team he took over from Hiddink, did he really improve it? Cheslea were the best team in the league under Hiddink and Utd still had Ronaldo back then. When he took over at Juve they were the defending champions and went backwards under him. Milan had their leanest period of Serie A wins for a long time under him. I know he had cup success, but surely the league is your priority. I suppose what i'm wondering is why would he suddenly become a manager that really has a great impact at Villa, when he hasn't in the past and thus think he's being judged on his CV and maybe not putting those achievments into context.

Capello has a great CV, but given limited resources he's struggled. The only time he didn't have massive money to spend was when Roma had financial problems. Without the ability to buy the best players he was left to depend on his "coaching" skills and was next to useless. Somehow the FA ignored this and thought he could turn England into a WC winning side. I don't really see how Ancelotti's CV particuarly differs from Capello's or other managers who have won things in favourable conditions. Houllier had a great CV, but didn't seem like an improvement on MON. Rijkaard has won La Liga and the CL, but has been hopeless when not being bale to rely on world class players. I really can't see anything on Ancelotti's CV that suggests he's the right man for Villa. Whilst David Moyes has shown year after year that he can achieve whilst weighed down with the financial problems at Everton. With Randy's backing surely he's far more likely to be a success at Villa than Carlo.

A lot of sense in this.

  14. I agree with lot of what Villan1957 is writing. It is long time since we had a period of injuries like this season. If we at what has happen since the january window opened and we had most of the players availble, we started at 17 and ended up in 9. If we only look at the last 18 games, we are number 7 and we picked up one point more the Spurs, only two points behind Arsenal and 3 behind Man City.

GH has nothing to be ashamed of.

We're not the only team that suffers injuries you know.

His best results came when he was in hospital/at home sick!
