I knew nothing about this player when he signed. But one comment on here stuck out, something along the lines of 'This lad is going to fetch a club record fee when he is sold.'

I won't embarrass that particular poster by naming him but as of now Veretout is really struggling.

What's the lowest fee we've ever got? That poster could still be right.

In Garde's interview with AVTV he said "we have practised more of the same as we did before City. In football you can't change what you're doing every week, you have to practice, practice, practice".

What a refreshing change from Sherwood's 'let's do something different every week and just see how it goes'.

I expect us to be cautious again against Everton, and to be pleased with a point if we can get it. We'll have to push for the 3 points against Watford though, which will be tough be they are organised and set up to play on the break.

Four points would be monumental. Get those and I'll start to believe.

  3. As both loath/loathe comes from the same Old English root: lath/lað, I do hope that he avoids the German and French words from the same root while at Aston Villa: Leid (German) and laid (French)...

This is the beauty of VillaTalk; it will be highbrow on page 59 but by page 62 we'll be on 50:50s, long throw ins and fish puns.

Not too sure which page number you're on at the moment...

Lost in the ether! I assume it's because I'm on mobile and post to page ratio is different.

    Or is that 'aether'? ;)

  4. There are eight million little reasons why we need to have some semblance of gratitude to Fabian. Not one of us wouldve signed that contract given our predicament at the time.

Yes he was a tosser about everything in the summer, but him signing that contract directly paid for one of Gana / Amavi / Ayew etc.

I dont wish him well, but nor do I wish him harm. "Meh" sums up my attitude towards him.

Works both ways. Delph runs his contract down and gets crippled - no one wants him. I think he got a good deal with that buy-out clause.

    Think it doesn't happen?

    Think Vlaar.

  5. My only concern with Gil is his apparent lack of pace, illustrated in that break away chance we had in the first half where he was caught up by two defenders.

Then again that's not really what he's there for. He'll get pushed off the ball from time to time but for the most part his ball retention is good.

As you pointed out, that's not his game (ironically, running 40 yards like mad onto a hopeful punt is the only time I want to see Gabby on the pitch) . Gil's pace is only of concern over 5-10 yards. Being so lightweight will be an advantage for this.

  6. You can tell that his confidence has taken a knock. He's only human. A clean sheet may just be the spark he requires. If his confidence is allowed to return completely we'll get a very good keeper back.

  7. sincerely hope he dies alone in a damp flat above a chip shop in Norwich.

I want to like this for its attention to detail.... but it just wouldn't be right.

Made me laugh out loud though.

  8. I think you are struggling when your best contributions are last ditch tackles.

He did well today but I still have the overriding feeling that he is weak and lacks concentration. Unfortunately Lescott is diabolical, and Okore is often injured so our options are limited.

I would prioritise a CB and striker in January and keep him around as backup.

There are currently 7 senior CBs at Villa. 4 of these were bought in the summer. Add to that the two out on loan. That makes it 9 in total. One more and Villa can field a team of CBs in January and Guzan in goal.

    Richards, Lescott, Ilori, Crespo.

    Clark, Okore, Senderos

    Baker, Donacien

You are Alex McLeish and I claim my £5.00.

  9. I was gutted to see him go and posted as much. He got ridiculous criticism above those who really deserved it. He's one of those players, where you can't quite figure out how he does it but he does, who beats a player with sheer tenaciousness. He gave Luke Shaw as good as he got then a few games later he was gone.... typical Villa.

  10. Future generations will puzzle over why the worst team in the league barely ever played comfortably their best player, much in the same way we puzzle over the location of Atlantis.

There's one in Stirchley next to B&Q, or at least there used to be.

  11. The PL monstrosity is a microcosm of the entire UK property market.

On the surface everything seems rosy - price indices are going up all the time.

But its a Ponzi or pyramid scheme and eventually you run out of suckers, however willing, able to take part and  prop the whole rotten edifice up.

Underneath the surface you have near-zero interest rates and funny-money being printed into oblivion. Eventually the taps have to be turned off and interest rates will be forced to rise.

Personally, I hope the whole PL thing implodes so all clubs can get back to a more even footing.
