  1. I can see that the dominance of the East Africans must be off putting, but I would expect the British record to have been beaten. I think one of the 80s greats basically said they don’t train  as hard!

  2. The first selections have been made for Athletics for the Brazil Olympics, and the marathon include the fastest British runner this year Callum Hawkins; 2.10.52 (24th fastest time in UK rankings). Until Farah decides to move up to the marathon, we are still slower than we were 30 years ago, when Steve Jones ran 2.07.13. Basil Heatley’s time from 1964 would qualify him for the olympics. And it just isn’t the marathon, looking at some of the UK records, and they are decades old...

  3. I think the media will be on his back way before the fans. I don't know how friendly he is with the media but he's foreign and just replaced Tim "promising English manager" Sherwood. All those ex-pros who were tipping Pearson for the job will jump at the chance to proclaim that this is why you shouldn't appoint foreigners, how they don't "get" the English game etc.

When you say the media do you mean ex-pros and mates of Sherwood, or do you mean all of the press? I always got the feeling that plenty of people in the written press thought Sherwood wasn’t all that.

  4. As he departed Brentford due to the player recruitment issue, would he come to Villa?

different scenario, the brentford lot are full on stats mad - using algorithims etc to judge performance and results. Different to a club who just have a holistic preference for affordable talent who can be sold on profitably.

He wanted the final say on transfers, I am unsure what happens at Villa, so will he have that say? He seems a man of principle, but the lure of Rangers despite that being a circus shows every man has a price.

  5. Liverpool in the 70's were a top club, now though they are an also ran. They are where we were at under O'Neal fighting to break into CL but not quite good enough.

Are they a step up from Villa though? As much as it hurts I'd have to say that yes it would be but not by much. They will pay big wages in an attempt to make CL which might be Benteke's motive if he wanted to go there because they aren't going to win much anytime soon so it can't be for footballing reasons.

If a club payed serious money (40m+) then I'm happy for him to go but for his career it should be either one of the top 4 or a top European club as I believe he's that good. We were very lucky that he joined us when he did but when he goes he needs to aim higher than Liverpool if he wants to show just how good he is.

Personally I want him to stay but I'm realistic enough to know that like Liverpool we aren't a CL club so it's more than likely he will go, what we need is to get as much money to invest in the squad as possible.

Yep they were over by the 80s; won the league six times, FA cup twice, European Cup twice, League cup four times...
