  1. I think you will find that Rommel had far inferior resources to Monty at the time, having the additional problem of Italian soldiers. Rommel was also considered to fight ‘Krieg Ohne Hass’ war without hate; a compassionate and thoughtful warrior, respected both by his own and his enemy; the British of course made a movie about him starring James Mason. Monty on the other hand despite his miltary qualities was a difficult man (see the friction in the higher echelons of Allied command during and after Overlord) and made more than a few costly mistakes (Operation Market Garden).

  2. You know what annoys me, is we get people complaining about us not spending money and then people complaining we spend too much money, People are blazing O'Neill for his purchase of Petrov at 8.5, This guy didnt have a pre-season with Villa remember. We have to pay the going rate, Only Lerner and O'Neil know what is worth it too the club, the interesting thing is when we had Ellis we spent millions on players who never had players who kept a value. Merson, Dublin, Stone, players who were at the latter end of there careers we spent over 15million on them, Now were trying to sign players who are young, not former internationals but current ones and were complaining. If we sign Bent and its a Big IF it will send a signal to people we mean business.

    You can’t mention Dublin and Merson in the same sentence as Stone. Stone was a major disappointment; we should have never bought him. Dublin and Merse were great servants for most of their Villa careers.

  3. I'm a Daily mail/ Sun man myself. Can't beat them.

    Here's a question- who knows what the best selling paper is in the UK?

    Not only is the Sun the best selling paper in the UK, I believe it is also the best selling paper in the world.

    Doesn't mean it's quality, though. In fact, I think calling it a newspaper is disrespectful to proper newspapers. Rubbish gossip and half-naked women (if I want porn, I use the internet thanks), populist views and sensationalist "journalism".

    The fact that it's the best selling rag out there, speaks volumes of the mothern day consumer. We're after fast information, quick entertainment and catchy headlines. Tragic, really.

    I believe the News of the World is the best selling paper in the UK.The Sun is nowhere near the top selling paper in the world. Some Japanese papers sell over 10 million copies on a daily basis

    Its the Sun for Daily but News of the world (the sunday version of the Sun) sells even more.

    And the Sun is the best selling paper in the English speaking world, so technically Michelsen is right.

    Where did anyone say it had to be Daily? The News of the World is considerably older than the Sun; so if anything the Sun is the daily version of the News of the world

    These Japanese papers sell nearly 2.5 times more than the Sun

  4. Thanks to Yes, Minister.

    The Daily Mirror is read by people who think they run the country;

    The Guardian is read by people who think they ought to run the country;

    The Times is read by people who actually do run the country;

    The Daily Mail is read by the wives of the people who run the country;

    The Financial Times is read by people who own the country;

    The Morning Star is read by people who think the country ought to be run by another country;

    The Daily Telegraph is read by people who think it already is.

    The Sun is read by people who don’t care who runs the country, as long as she’s got big tits

    Of course this was written before Murdoch managed to down grade the Times and the editorial now is not worth the paper it is written on.

  6. Why do people put Grauniad for the Guardian?

    To expand on Gringo's answer, it was once renowned for typographical errors (spelling mistakes, basically) Private Eye, therefore called it the Grauniad, and it's stuck.

    Like Mike I'm quite surprised by how many Guardian readers and Independent readers we have.

    Much greater percentage than the national average. Is it Villa specific, or Football specific, I wonder?

    Well the actually truth is a bit more interesting. All papers in the 60s and 70s were beholden to print unions. To make a newspaper you needed typesetters working on machines called Linotypes. They were paid a going rate and then a bonus on the amount of text set; speed being of the essence. Most papers did this on the amount of correct copied keyed; the Guardian however did it on the amount of copy keyed, whether it be correct or not. Hence a huge number of copy errors, picked up by Private Eye

  7. Whats depressing is how papers that were once worth something have become crap. The Daily Telegraph and The Times were once worth something. Now they are shite. But the biscuit has to be the Sunday Times. That paper was something once, now its dreadful. I like the New York Times alot, and of the course the Gruinad.

  8. Its more to a left back then a good left foot though. Would be wicked getting those sorts of talents, but that movie which was linked, aint exactly promoting his qualities at left back IMO.

    I didn’t watch the film tbh. I ve seen not that much of him, but I know a few Southampton fans who say he’s great. Its more the combination with Barry that excites me; when Samuel was onform that season, it was the combination with Barry that made it so exciting. They complemented each other. I think Samuel has sadly lost that, and Bouma is just not good enough.

    It depends on the price, but we have to make a gamble and I think that he will be available....
