  1. I ask that people don’t call GT Turnip, and it comes back again. For someone whose moniker reflects the history of Villa, I am surprised by you M_c_t_W

  2. It doesn’t matter if its round or in a crest; the most important thing to me is that the lion looks rampant; and shall we say manly? The lettering on the current is shite, really shite (Centaur small caps?); Better if it went back to a simple Sans Serif, or if we have to keep serif, make it Egyptian or something by super Brummie; John Baskerville. Also the club should never and I mean never skimp on the production of the crest; no shitty 4 colour process, a proper claret and a proper blue, and a proper off gold (looks like Kodak yellow). And dump the stripes behind the logo; its never works and our logo never works at small sizes

  3. Paul McGrath isn’t a cult hero; he’s a hero. He was a top class footballer, who was universally recognised as being great. Same pretty much goes for Platt and Cowans; I will go for Ian Taylor.

  4. In all honesty if we want Ellis out we have to have a unified front and get behind an organistaion we can all agree on; every man and his dog like to have a pot shot at VFC, but at the moment thats all that seems to exist to me. But unless you can get an organistaion that unites most of us on VT and most of them on H&V and then get all the other Villa fans who aren’t on the internet we haven’t got a chance.

If you then asked every one to contribute £10, you have a fund that can be used to make life extremely difficult for Doug; taking out full page adverts in newspapers, bombarding the large corporate shareholders in Aston Villa, finding a buyer for Villa, making a business plan for the future. Turning up everywhere where Doug is, etc, etc. But it all depends on some unity and some money, and I can’t see that happening.

Until that day or Doug goes to a better place, not much is going to happen.

  5. his "loss"record under villa is comparable to Ron Suanders

Lies, Damm Lies and Statistics as a great politican said; Ron Saunders actually won something; Gregory won nothing. Ron Saunders will go down in history; with Gregory the jury is very much out...

  6. I ve got the Railway Children debut album; but like several other bands that left Factory, like OMD, after they left Factory, things weren’t ever the same. Brighter is a fantastic single and one of these days I must buy the album on CD. Agree Northside were shite; utter shite!

  7. ACR were that way because they listened to some of Tony ‘Anthony’ Wilson’s wierd suggestions. I ve heard decent music critics telling me that they were the greatest live band ever...

  8. I think the tongue was firmly in the cheek; I could have said The Railway Children or Northside. Some of the Durrutti Column stuff is really beautiful, but a little esoteric for most...

  9. Martin I have always had a lot of time for your excellent musical taste; however I have to question your liking for the Housemartins. Sheep was ok, but then they got really annoying and contained a mad axeman, the future Fat boy slim (real name Quentin), A childrens illustrator of dubious taste and possibly worst of all a future member of the Beautiful South. Can that be forgiven?!! Im with Blandy on the SMiths, a top band, but certainly not the greatest; that would be A Certain Ratio or Durrutti Column!

  10. They never realy broke the charts

I don’t think that they had any hit singles (a few top twenty hits at the most), but I am pretty sure all there albums were top five; and more than a couple made it to number one. Certainly Morrissey and Marr wouldn’t have had to pay so much to Rourke and joyce if they hadn’t sold more than a few...

How soon is now, and Please Please let me get what I want are my faves

  11. I feel ambigious about this one; I ve seen him play three times, twice for Chelsea as a sub and also last year against us. Against Chelsea he looked exciting, infact one of the best sub appearances I ve ever seen, the fact that Chelsea were already three or four up against Everton might have something to do with it. He just seemed to ooze class. Against Villa, I have to say he looked anoymous, he popped up and scored a goal, but frankly he looked no better against us than say another very tall striker called Crouch. So I am very much cut in two; he could be good he could be bad.

Its hard to feel that he really wants to be here; he had a disastrous spell at Wolves, where I believe there were discipline problems and I believe he refused to play at one point. He didn’t seem to be that keen on staying at Charlton, though Curbishley obviously rated him. Then there were all those rumours about roasting. All in all he carries a bit of a stench.

DOL seems to have a streak in him that likes to reform bad boys (Woodgate, Smith and Bowyer), so maybe he feels he can keep CC on the straight and narrow, and I hope he can. But I can’t feel that DOL has scraped the barrel on this one; no money to sign players who I feel would be able to bring more to the table.

Fair play to Richard; he’s saying it as he sees it, and as he says its hsi right. I m a little more positive, and I am trying reserve judgement on what has to be one of the most uninspriring signings. I just hope it turns out well.

I am sorry to say, but I fear that our two great hopes the Moore brothers, may remain hopes and not realities. I am getting the feeling that DOL might not rate them that much. Lets hope I am wrong.

But all in all, this is another damming sign of Doug Ellis. For God sake Doug, give the man the tools he needs, stop tying his hands and let us move forward. This is just a sideways move.

  12. John you are right, I looked at a picture of 1887 and the players all have crests on, but none were on the shirts until 1957.

In the book Aston Villa 2000: the official graphic history, there is a painting of Ramsey in black shirt with red rampant lion looking right. I am not sure if this is painted from a real source or a fabrication.

  13. Its been changed so many times, but the current one, which is a shield is closer to the original than the roundel (which Middlesborough still use with a rampant lion); I think it wasn’t introduced until the 1950s, though I am sure John Lerwell would know this! The two most important things are the Rampant Lion looking to the left (from our Scottish roots, I guess) and the motto.

A few years back I had a go at redoing it; I must get back to it some time, as the current one leaves a lot to be desired in the detail. The current one was done so they could trademark it I am led to believe
