    The landmark wins of Southgate’s tournament football tenure are a group stage win against Croatia and a knockout win against a now demonstrably poor Germany side. Both on home turf during the Euros. Every other time we’ve come across a side around our level we’ve come short. This WC has been exactly the same. He has had some incredible luck in-terms of opponents and routes to progression, that this is used as a defence is borderline farcical to me.

    It’s a weird one for me, very good performance all in all so won’t be critical, without context. But they’ll be the same people who have been defending past awful performances against the lesser sides by saying look at the results defending the result today with the performance. End of the day for me the calibre of these England players need a better manager to reach their potential.
