  1. Hi General. I'm usually a Villa optimist but I found this newspaper quote from MON a bit depressing. He was talking about Manchester City and tipping them as contenders to win the league:

“The frustration has come from the type of player they have been able to attract,” he said. “You are looking at trying to get value for money, but Manchester City are putting it beyond an awful lot of teams.

“You think, well, you got quite close last year and suddenly another club has just stepped over you immediately before you can go on. It kind of punctures you."

Some people are saying this is just mind games but I think it sends quite a negative message to the players and the fans. It sounds a bit as if he's thrown in the towel.

Is that how the Villa Board see this generally? "A bit punctured"?

  2. The main interest in these old threads is to see how many posters now have red cards - 4 on this thread!

Also the amazing insight of some posts:

I certainly would have picked Milner over Bentley, mainly because we know what we are getting with Milner and have even had a chance to see him in action in an earlier stage of his development - when he was bloody good and worked really hard.

I think the jury is still just a little bit out on whether Bentley is going to show that consistent hard work and commitment to match his skills.

  3. My guess -

    .....................Friedel

    Young (if fit).Cuellar.Davies.Shorey

    ............NRC.Sidwell.Petrov

    Albrighton.......................Young

    ....................Carew

That's actually a pretty good side, given that we are missing the Gabbys, Milners, etc., and MON still...errr...has a little extra buying to do this summer. Maybe L Young won't make it?

I just hope to heaven no injuries!

  4. Taken from the Official Newcastle site

    Season Ticket Sales Approach 25,000

FOLLOWING weekend reports in the Press, Newcastle United would like to set the record straight with regards season ticket sales.

The Club can confirm that sales are now closing in on the 25,000 mark with uptake in the expanded family area particularly strong.

Interest is continuing to grow on a daily basis and with the new season still three weeks away we expect the number of season ticket holders to further increase.

Actually not a bad figure all things considered but I still find it funny they feel the need to make a statement about this on their site.

They will always get a lot of bums on seats. Their catchment area is well documented and is the reason why they get so much exposure in the media.

Its just that somehow Newcastle fans thought that being a one club city (well, one club for two cities* and any number of surrounding towns really) meant that they had a divine right to be at the top end of the Premier League. Their results on the pitch hadnt reflected their profile in the media in a decade.

*Yes, I know Gateshead is a town, but its population is almost 200k, so I chose to word my sentence so it was easier on the eye.

Newcastle would get large crowds even if they dressed up 11 donkeys in the barcodes strip and sent them out to play.

Next season that may actually be what happens!

  5. Well even with Lerner we have spent far less then teams like Newcastle, spurs that have been spending for years and they have managed to get nowhere. I think we are going the right way now about it. We have a quality manager & a good chairman that lets MON get on with it. We are bringing in youngsters through the ranks & buying quality young players like Young, Milner & Davis. We still need that extra bit of quality in cent of Midfield like Gerrard or Lampard which isnt gonna be easy to come by with other clubs competing with us that have more money for wages etc, and replacing Laursen isnt gonna be easy. But I think we are one of the most exciting teams in England to watch & with a bit of luck we can crack the top 4 at some point.
    This.
  6. Am I reading that people think Barry is FAST?
Not in this thread, you're not. Just that he can move quickly when he needs to in order to set up an attack/exploit a defensive gap. I'd be interested to see your argument against that point rather than against some invented position that no-one holds.
  7. It's all about opinions or the way each of us see things. I'm in agreement with all of BOF's comments on and changes to BCV's original and especially:
He's too slow (no he's not)
When Barry sees a gap and an opportunity to get an attack moving he can really shift like the clappers. With great long strides.
As indeed he did on Monday in the move that led to our goal.
