We're amongst the worst in the league at creating chances attacking wise, and what we have created has come very recently.

Early on we were creating relatively nothing

Indeed, thankfully in the early games we had an abnormally high conversion rate of chances.

Jesus Christ this place gets so reactionary these days, beat United away the guys a messiah, have a mental 15 minutes when we were cruising to a win and he’s out.

    Perspective folks, perspective.

If it is the same people saying the two things you've a point, I rather suspect it isn't and it is different people with opposing views. The only thing that really changes is the people posting depending on the result.

That's a very good read. Replacing 1 player with 3 doesn't improve our starting 11 as we cant field 13 players. I see Bailey as Jacks replacement, I have loved what I've seen of Bailey so far but as of yet he isn't an improvement. Buendia I see as a replacement for Barkley, compared to the Barkley before his injury it's about even. Ings I see as a replacement for Wesley, but as Wesley was on the bench that's an improvement of the bench not the starting 11. So the staring 11 hasn't improved. The biggest concern for me is that we didn't seem to have a well thought out plan of how to best use the players we bought. For me it's hurting to see Bailey, Buendia and Traoré on the bench. With the system we play now there doesn't seem to a natural position for any one of them. Spending £70M on two exciting players and then have them on the bench is a concern.

I don't want to be negative but I don't think Watkins and Ings will work, at least not with this formation and and the players we field behind them. To me Watkins and Ings are too similar, both like to drop down and run in behind the defence, neither creates much for the other and they more or less run at the same balls. Both need creative players behind them who feeds them with quality through balls and create chances for them, problem is, when we play two hard working box to box midfielders behind in McGinn and Ramsey, they wont get the quality passes that for example Buendia and Traoré can provide. That leaves it to our wide players to create chances, but there we have our two full backs who are good full backs, but mostly just whipps in crosses. I think it would be better for Watkins and Ings if Buendia played instead of Ramsey and if Bailey played instead of Targett. If also Traoré played instead of Cash then they would get a lot to work with, but it would probably leave us far too vulnerable.

I have no doubt that Dean Smith will figure out a way of making it work, but I think it will mean that only one of Ings and Watkins will play, perhaps both can play if Watkins plays wide forward at times.

Belated reply - I agree with all the above.

I am not sure of this Trent. I think he knows exactly what he wants to do, he just hasn’t been able to do it yet as Bailey and Buendia - our two record signings - have both been out. So what we have been doing has been a bit of adaptation. Liverpool would look different without Salah and Mane, etc etc. Pretty sure when they are fit it’ll be a 4-5-1/4-3-3 and look a lot better.

I don't and I've less faith. How do Ings and Watkins fit into those formations with Bailey and Buendia?

I think we signed good players but without a clear plan on how to use them. I think Smith is going to come under real pressure.

  5. The boys a talent, a genuine talent.

The step or steps up to doing it in the Premier League are massive and too frequently this is overlooked when talking about young players but its hard not to watch this lad and see huge potential.

    Were you? Cripes.

My perception is that most people expect them to rise a bit - I mean the kind of early renewal discount went this year, and if some Wolves tickets are 50 quid. - is that the most expensive ones? then that's a bit of a shame. I guess they reckon the people in the posh seats can and will afford it. I guess also it'll test how firm the demand is - we know it's high, but don't know how price sensitive it is.

I bit of a creep up of prices can be swallowed, but I think that with stuff like household bills going up and cuts to working credit and such like they need to recognise that some people are struggling already - don't kill the demand and the next generation of supporters.

Yes and my perception is that most don’t or didn’t expect them to raise and that there is an unrealistic expectation amongst fans that the owners will continue to spend, the team improve, demand increase but that cost doesn’t.

The ticket price of £50 isn’t the most expensive I believe those are £55 in the DE, I’m not sure they are the “posh seats”.

I think your last line is your undoing here, Trent.

If that performance against Chelsea was "the sort of performance we see from him far more often" then he's not only got the fanbase fooled. He's managed to fool Southgate. He's managed to fool Dean Smith. Heck, he's even managed to fool the stats from last season that show we allegedly* lose far more than we win when he's not in the team

*I can't find stats to back this up, but believe it's 2 wins from 12 games without Mings

No, it isn’t it is totally accurate.

Southgate has a limited number of CB’s to pick from even less that are left footed. He is one of England’s best left footed CB’s.

I don’t think Smith or Southgate are fooled, I think they see his strengths and his weaknesses.

If he has people fooled its a section of Villa fans who don’t.

It's so funny reading some of these ridiculous posts. It's almost like a healing circle jerk in here. People beating off their frustrations that some fans just choose not to define Mings by his mistakes. Any objective fan sees he's a solid CB but will never be one of the top CBs in this league with the amount of awful mistakes he makes.

And to @TrentVillafor thinking Konsa is "far superior" at this point...

Thanks for the laugh, good buddy.

To say that he’s not treated in the same way as other players is a load of rubbish. That’s obviously your feeling but I just admit I’ve not seen that at all. He gets loads of stick, deservedly or not.

That is your view, obviously I don't agree. I think he is treated very differently to other players. I don't think he does get stick when he doesn't deserve it, I think a lot of fans simply refuse to acknowledge the mistakes or the regularity of them for the reasons I've already given.

He’s shaping up to be a top centre back. We may struggle to hold on to him next summer. Love watching him play.

Clubs will be lining up for him next summer if they get a wiff he is available.

A major goal creating gaff every game is a massive exaggeration. He makes mistakes like this from time to time not every game.

If he didn’t make these mistakes he wouldn’t be playing for us because his general level of play is top class. The silly mistakes like today are why he plays for us rather than a champions league team.

    I think that is fair.

Sorry but I think that is absolute rubbish. Mings is a top defender but sadly he has a few costly mistakes in him that will cost us points.
For me you could say he lost the match for us today but I don’t think his performances in the championship were that much better than in the prem. He’s a very good defender, 80% of the time he’s on the top of his game but his lows are terrible. Still love the guy and he makes up for it.

You are free to think whatever you want obviously, obviously I don't agree. He is nowhere near a "top" defender.

He was outstanding in the Championship, an utter cut above players at that level in every element of his game.

The irony is your last line pretty much illustrates the point I was making. He is very good a lot of the time but he makes a lot of mistakes but because people love him (and I can understand why) they either overlook them or deny they happen.

I'm not saying he is a bad defender, clearly he isn't but he is I think often over rated by a large section of the fanbase and not treated in the same way as many other players.

There was probably about 3 occasions where a simple pass on but he tried something but other than that he was brilliant.

Three occasions in the space of a few minutes late in the first half, other than that I thought he was very good.

“Miles off the level of Konsa”? That seems a bit overblown to me. Don’t get me wrong, Konsa is my preference at the back, but they offer slightly different things, and I think actually have a nice balance. Konsa more composed, and Mings more physical.

Yes. I think Konsa is a far superior player.

He can't take the man because he was on the soft yellow

If that happens at 0-0 or ten minutes in to the game I think he definitley does clean him out and take the card, at the stage of the game tonight it wasn't worth it

Like I said earlier my problem is the word "mistake" I think it's poor play but it's not a mistake, I can see why he's charged over there, he just hasn't got anywhere near him, the commentator I had said mings dived in, he didnt, he didn't get close enough to dive in, he effectively did nothing

    Fair point re the yellow.

I don't think it is a mistake because he has to go to the ball, I think he over committed himself though.

Not sure about this at all. I agree Konsa is developing into a better player, but cast your mind back to when Mings was injured in our first PL season, and how much our form noticeably dropped.

IMO he’s an excellent centre back with great athleticism and leadership skills, who lacks a little bit of finesse, and that naturally results in the occasional mistake on the ball.

A flawed player, no doubt, but I see him as a regular starter for at least the next 2 seasons, and that doesn’t worry me.

Konsa is superior player now, never mind developing into one.

Yes Mings is a leader and a great athlete but he is far from a great CB and I stand by every word in my previous post.
