that's what, I said....whether it was VAR or him the outcome was the same.....He waved away the protests from the Lille players.

While saying VAR are checking this. On both those occasions he was told by VAR what to give/not give.

There was 10 minutes in the first half when he was carding everything that moved. I think the grass at Lille may be banned for their next game. Both coaches. Duran got carded because Santos didn't want to jump for a 50/50 (go back and have a look at the utter confusion on Jhon's face when he gets the yellow). Emi got carded for time wasting while the ball was in play. Only one of the yellows on either side was close to being one- the Digne challenge. And that was by most definitions not a yellow. And then there was the farce during the shootout.

The guy totally lost control of the match. He left himself nowhere to escalate if and when things got spicy, and was completely out of his depth. He also wanted to be the centre of attention. Someone must have had a word at halftime as he kept his cards away for a while, but during that time he compensated by calling a foul for everything. Any touch whatsoever by any player on any other player. The game became basketball.

The only consolation was that he was equally shit for both teams, but that aside it was absolutely the worst single refereeing performance I've witnessed in 30 years.

Shows the standard of commentary when they don't even notice it, the ref lost complete control, Lille tried to get the goal disallowed and the penalty. They re took a corner when their first attempt was hopeless.

Their second goal, lille player held onto Rogers and stopped him challenging for the ball, then they moaned about us doing the same in the first leg..

Glad we won and glad it's over but the display from them and the officials leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

Martinez just stood his ground against them,  they don't like it up em.

In fairness I did hear them say that it was in open play. I think there was as much confusion in the comms box as everywhere else with that crazy decision.

Looks a cracking young player tbf, could be a good signing for us… more tears for Lille 😆

Don't think he'd be suited to the prem tbh. Spent more time moaning on the ground than getting up and tracking back after runners when he lost the ball.

All the skill, but I'd hate him in a Villa shirt. Plus Ben Mee would break his legs.

Refreshing to see a nations media (french) defending their team, despite their fans throwing stuff on the pitch at Martinez and throwing footballs on the pitch to disrupt Ollies penalty and the ref getting in Dougs face before his and him encroaching on the ball in Dougs run up. Absolutely disgraceful behaviour tbh yet Martinez is seen as the bad one.

Watch the penalties again, Lille were throwing every trick in the book to disrupt us.

They were running dark arts throughout both legs too, btw. That Santos threw himself to the ground at each and every opportunity.

Lille fans abused him, waved imaginary cards at him when he legitimately was holding the ball. It’s embarrassing. Why do officials and pundits clutch their pearls when players dish it back? Emi just shushed and mocked them a little. That’s it. Players are humans too. Not sure why sections of the media are acting like he stuck his middle finger up or spat at anyone.

Because many journalists are lazy, and rather than do research or look into things, they rely on tropes, narratives and reputation.

Emi even said about the timewasting thing, that Chevalier (cracking keeper as well btw) was doing similar, and got no attention, because it was at least partially based on reputation.

That said if anyone can find me the rule that says you can book a player for timewasting when the ball is in play, I would be all ears. How can the ref know about the yellow card peno rule (which it appears no-one else on earth did), but not that it is up to the opposition to stop the goalie hanging onto the ball when it's in play?

  6. I can't explain his performance tonight. Not sure how it's possible to go from his recent excellent performances to that. Oh well, everyone has an off day at some point.

One thing I will say about the ref though, is that he was spot on and bold with all the big decisions. For example, telling all the Lille players to do one as their GK rightly crashed into his own teammate.

He was told about that one by VAR. He was holding his ear afterward.

Don't make excuses, that performance by the ref was epicly bad.

    Right back.

He should have been booked twice already and there have been four Villa players booked for challenges on him - he's the smartest player on the pitch and as good a right back as I've seen anywhere this season. I hate him and I think we should give them whatever they want for him in the summer.

If he is ever in a Villa shirt I will hate football forever.
