  1. With all this talk from Milner's camp that he hasn't asked to leave - you have to query who is telling the truth here. It's also disappointing it appears MON has fallen out with another player.

Didn't O'Neill suggest that Milner wasn't going to sign a new contract and said that he wanted to hear what City had said?

  2. Premier League - Parker: Villa the winners over Milner

    Eurosport - Sat, 24 Jul 08:39:00 2010

When you look at the number of players that Manchester City already have in their squad, especially in midfield, it looks as though James Milner will be just another to arrive on big money and not play regular football.

At Aston Villa last season he was one of the first names on the team sheet, but it's not going to be that way at Eastlands.

Milner is highly-praised for his versatility, but I can't see him holding down a regular starting place either on the wings or in the centre of midfield. Due to their recent signings, City have well over a dozen other midfielders in their ranks already. One of those is now a World Cup winner and another was a first-teamer at Barcelona for the past three years.

In footballing terms, I think it is a bad move for him. But if it is money that he is chasing then he's off to the right club.

To leave Aston Villa to go to Manchester City, it must be about money. City may be on a mission to spend their way to the top, but in terms of comparing the two clubs, both historically and in recent years, Villa have more about them. It's certainly not a step forward.

Roberto Mancini is loading himself up with problems, whether he tries to ignores the major egos in the dressing room and persist with a settled side, or whether he adopts a rotation policy to keep everyone happy.

Even when Chelsea were at their most spend-happy under Jose Mourinho, the Portuguese coach managed to keep a strong core within the first team. Mancini is going to struggle to do that with the number of playing staff already on his books as it is, without adding any more.

I personally don't think this will be a good move for Milner. For Villa, however, I think it could be great. They are in line to pocket a tremendous sum of money for a player who I don't think is worth anywhere near that amount.

Once again, last season Villa suffered from the lack of depth in their squad. They just weren't able to last the pace as the race for fourth place neared its end. So a windfall of anything up to the £30 million they are demanding can help Martin O'Neill make several significant signings that will greatly aid them next season.

He was great at times last season, and has improved year on year, but it remains to be seen if he can produce that form consistently. He is also still not proven at international level. It seems to me that City are once again paying well over the odds for a player.

Alex Ferguson or Arsene Wenger would certainly never dream of paying that kind of fee for a player of Milner's abilities. Not even Harry Redknapp, who is always keen to give English players a chance, would see him as a decent buy at that price.

I'm no fan of Premier League managers shipping in foreign players when there are equally talented Englishmen not being given the same opportunities, but when Milner is going for so much money can you blame them?

  3. Having done a quick Google it does seem its a 3 year deal but no confirmation of the value.

I think it was about £20 million over 3 years - MM confirmed it was close to this earlier in the thread?

I'm also interested in other sponsors that we'll announce over the next few weeks - I notice Carlsberg and Seat Exchange are no longer "platinum partners".

  4. I didn't think he meant the players were tired either. I think he was expressing surprise and disapointment that they played like they were tired. A world of difference.

Perhaps we should have a poll to see if 99% of posters thought that he meant the players were tired?

  5. General, it's been reported that Villa have debts of £63 million, and I think that this was also shown in the most recently published accounts. I know Randy didn't use any debt to buy the club, so could you shed any light on where the debt came from (is it a legacy from the previous owners, taken out now to help fund the club, etc). I am not particularly worried, as every business runs with some level of debt - I am just interested.

    Thanks

  6. We want 18M for Gareth Barry and Liverpool are the only club willing to pay anything remotely close to that sum.

He is currently unfit and not even in our team for the Intertoto draw against Odense.

Liverpool are in no rush to get him, they have superior players in Gerrard and Mascherano, as well as Lucas who is a good player.

Does MON think he can wait around and still get 18M come late August?

Scenario: Liverpool doesn't bid and we have a very unhappy Barry in August, what will happen then???

Do you think we're wrong to hold out to get the value that we place on the player then?

The answer to your question is simple - Barry's got to knuckle down and play.

  7. General,

I wanted to ask you about the website - apparently Villa have released a statement confirming Barry has asked the manager to leave the club but we are still declining the offer. This isn't reflected on the news section of the website. Is this because we haven't made a statement, or because the news section isn't up to date (it should be!)

    Thanks!

    Andy

  8. jamesvilla: As I have said before, HOK has been in looking at all of VP. We are not prepared to determine concrete plans yet...they need to do their work.

Thanks for that, General. Any idea when they'll report back their recommendations/plans? Would Randy consider pulling down the Doug Ellis stand with the North Stand, or will it just be the North Stand going?

    Thanks

I think the general answered the second part of your question in his initial response?

  9. General,

I wondered if you could expand a little on Villa's strategy with regard to corporate partners next season? Do you envisage (barring 32red) that we'll stay the same, or are there some significant (non shirt sponsoring) partners going to join the club?

Also, can you give some indication about the impact the led pitch side ads have had on match sponsorship revenue? Has they had the impact that the club expected?

  10. General,

Can you give us any information about Villa's strategy and aims for the transfer window? As you can see for yourself there's already a lot of speculation on the amount of money available to the manager, possible salary caps at the club and the number of players that will come in.

I know you don't know about individual transfers and can't comment on targets, but do you think our (the fans) experience of this window will be different to last summer? Do you think we will see more than 6 players being brought in?

Finally, if you can't answer any of those (which you probably can't!), do you find it furstrating during the transfer window that you can't communicate with the fans on targets & plans, and do you think there is a way to do it better? (probably not!)

    Thanks

  11. General,

I wonder if you could tell us a little about the board's history and experience in negotiations, give everyone seems to be worried that we're just going to keel over and cave to Liverpool's first offer?

Also, how do you react to being told you can't do something? I think Villa are taking the right approach, in a very grown up way, by saying that we are desperate to keep the player, but we won't keep an unhappy player.

Finally, (and I understand if you don't want to answer this one, for fear of having it re-quoted at you after events play out) what's your feeling on the chances of Barry staying? 50-50? Better or worse?
