  1. How come Labour seem so reluctant to appoint a woman as leader.

Harriet Harman seems quite impressive at the despatch box and has all the right credentials.

She has aristocratic forebears and links with the politically impeccable bloodline of Joseph Chamberlain, giving her the sort of breeding and cachet the electorate demand.

She went to a posh school every bit as good as most Tories, and where Baroness Williams went.

    So why not?

Suitability of candidate you would hope. Personally I am not convinced that Harman would be a good leader as she is a very divisive person

  2.

I have been misled, if it was changed in chile, then how did the 1000 angry argentinians get all het up about?

The newspapers seem to have a view on this now - and before anyone claims political bias the info is coming from all areas such as Mail, Indy, Mirror etc.

The porche was initially registered with the "Falklands" number plate but was later changed to H1 VAE , in 2001. It was then subsequently changed back and the VAE number plate allocated to another Porche. It then gets very murky as to who and what knew about this, but it certainly appears to be no "fluke".

Anyone seriously thinking that this was an innocent mistake is wrong IMO. Clarkson has a track record of crass, puerile behaviour and it seems that for once he got caught out and basically had the shit scared out of him. He is an obnoxious individual who thinks nothing of borderline racism as being acceptable. Remember this is the individual who threatened to assault a kid in Barbados. Top Gear at times is a reflection of his crass attitude and those behind this deserve to be questioned and if need be held accountable.

But whatever your views on Clarkson, the point is that at no point was there a car in Argentina with that number plate on it.  Whether they intended to or not, it didn't actually happen.

Hmm the the Telegraph are certainly saying it was in Argentina

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/top-gear/11148267/Jeremy-Clarkson-in-new-row-over-bellend-number-plate-in-Falklands-Porsche.html

....The BBC has insisted the number plate Clarkson used when he first drove the car in Argentina - H982 FKL - was coincidental and they removed it when locals complained it was a reference to the conflict.....

  3. Well, either make jokes about both or don't make jokes about either. Double standards are annoying & I'm quite uncomfortable with the idea that AIDS is somehow easier to joke about because it generally only affects a smaller section of society or people thousands of miles away i.e. there is an implication that because it doesn't cause harm to you or people like you, it is fair game.

Categorisation of diseases into what is acceptable to joke about and what isn't is a very tricky process if ever you want to follow that path. Jokes as such about things that affect many people, and probably directly in forums like this are certainly another consideration.

Look at Ebola and Aids (the two mentioned earlier). Society in general allows for jokes to be told because as Mart points out they don't affect the vast majority within our society group. Cancer on the other hand affects a hell of a lot of people all over so will obviously be a very sensitive subject.

I have spent a lot of time working in places like Texas and East Europe where racism both mild and downright extreme is par for the course and as a result jokes of a racist nature are widely accepted there.

Look at religious jokes in certain countries and societies they are very much taboo (!) but others it's fair game.

For me especially cancer aint a laughing matter for reasons I have previously stated on this site - others have used that against me, but hey each to their own at the end of the day.

  4. Clarkson isn't solely to blame (if there even is any to hand out) here

Top gear must employ dozens of researchers, producers and editors to do this sort jape.

absolutely - BUT interestingly Clarkson has a track record (and not that by the Stig) of similar crass behaviour, outside of Top Gear shows. So is it a case of one feeding off another?

  5.

That it is generally acceptable by our society that people can make jokes about Ebola (current trend), AIDS (this website in particular) and it be funny to the vast majority, but if someone makes a joke about cancer it is frowned upon more often than not.

I'm not saying that none of these should be funny, I think they all can be and are given the correct circumstances.

Cancer should be funny.  It's been more than 22.3 years.  A while to go for Ebola yet though.

It should be funny? - care to explain that a little further ................ (4th time of writing this post as the first one had the many swear words and insults in it !)

I would think your chances of a positive answer might be aided by actually describing what you're after in rather more detail than "some software".

    Probably yes.

I just thought some people might prefer to discuss it privately rather than on an open forum. For whatever reason.

Anyway. The details. Basically I just want a programme that will generate a fixture list. I'm not sure how easy or hard this would be in practise.

Meanwhile back to the geeky jokes!!

Welcome to the Fixture List generator. This purpose of this site is to allow you to generate Fixture Lists for the Teams or Players featuring in your League. You can use it for anything from Football, Rugby and Single Player sports or games. ........

  8. When failed world record attempts are reported as news.

Saw a story this morning about a guy attemptign but failing the world bench press record.

So what? It wasn't spectacular failure or anything, he just tried to lift it and failed.

I failed to beat the world high jump record last night. Do a story about me.

"....and finally, Ben 'stevo' Stephenson, friend of another Benn, today attempted to break the world high jump record. The attempt failed though due to various factors including the over zealous support of a work colleague who had to be ejected from the audience for being too 'crazy. Apparently her claim that her large breasts were in the Guinness book of records were more a statement of location than a achievement. Ben later commented that the failure would not deter him from his attempt to enter the Guiness Book of records and his next try will be probably based on the most concussions ever suffered by anyone, apparently he is only a stones throw away from achieving this, My name is Trevor McDonald good night"

  9. While I won't deny that we've been quite defensive in the opening games (I'm pretty sure injuries and illness have played a large part in that), I think perceptions have been skewed somewhat by our ridiculous start which has seen has face all of last season's top 4 in 7 games, not to mention Stoke away which is always a tough fixture.

Accusations of us being "the new Stoke" are just rubbish though.

I am sorry but the old "excuses" of injury and illness are just a weak one.

even if you accept the illness one that was in one match against Arsenal. In terms of injuries, who exactly, Vlaar and Benteke - is lambert so dependent on these two players that if they are not available then its a certain loss?

As said previously in this and many other threads there has been "wait unit Okore is back" , is he back now?

Also you mention our "ridiculous" start - again a weak argument. You have to play all of the teams twice so that has no relevance at all. What about the loss to Orient was that due to the fact that like previous years we have played some of the top teams? Was the turgid display against Newcastle down to this, was the past two years awful football down to this, was the defeats to lower league sides down to this? ....... etc etc

No we are not the new Stoke, that is because they at least had a plan that threatened the other teams goal. They also had a good chance of finishing mid table.

Now we may see a massive performance increase in terms of threat and attacking ability, and let's hope we do, as we play the next few matches, but please lets not throw out frankly weak arguments if they do not.

But you have your views and while I respect them, I am struggling to see their validity based on the excuses line

  10. I'm so confused, what has Lambert done wrong so far this season?

I think people who have concerns are basing them on the last two years. While it's been a solid start there are issues that are still there from last season.

There will always be issues that are still there, but we've also improved a great deal, especially when we do not have possession. This is shown by our current league standing and the points on the board.

However, we are only 7 games into the season and 4 of those games were against the top 4 of last season, so we should surely wait out until any verdict is made for good or bad.

you say we have progressed (and in reality we should have given the time he has been here) but have we? After the same number of games last year etc and against similar opposition have we really made positive progression? We have had the customary defeat to a lower league club (so no progress there just more embarrassment ) , the football has been turgid and we have seen another round of excuses trotted out.

At what point can we say enough?

How great would it be for him to do well and the team play good football. How great would it be to have a positive football philosophy back at the club?

Sometimes in life what you want does not happen but you have to face up to facts and accept, adept and move on. At the moment there just seems a bit too little real scrutiny of the manager and his impact.

  11. I don't understand why we can't have a conversation about why we can't string a few passes together without it being seen as moaning or having a dig at the manager.

I think 3 years in its fair enough to voice concerns over issues that have been evident from day 1.

It's got the potential to get better but its a definite concern.

absolutely fair point. There is no problem in having belief in the manager, but so often that belief emanates from an excuse for poor play or yet another defeat. His tenure as villa boss we gave heard..... Its lerners fault .... Wait until we get okore back ..... We are playing the top six........ We are not bothered with the cup.....its huttons fault..... Its mcleish fault.... Benteke / vlaar is injured wait until they get back ..... Etc etc etc.

At what point does lambert and his quite bizarre boring football philosophy actually come for some accountability and scrutiny?

The evidence to show that lambert is positive for Villa diminishes all of the time, its a shame, a real shame because i had high hopes for him, but seeing the way the club runs from a football side of things seems to indicate that he is not up for this job.

  12.

It is not the 80s anymore, we can't compete, it is a financial game nowadays.

How come lower league teams keep beating us then? How did Leicester beat a team that's spent more this calender year than any team in the history of the sport?

How did we beat Chelsea, arsenal, Liverpool and city last year?

Cup upsets have happened longer than just the past three seasons. Even better Villa Managers and Teams (the League And Euro Champs) lost to lower league teams - they raise their games against 'bigger teams' just like we do sometimes against the so-called Sky darlings so sorry not having that argument - Lower leage (and non league teams) have beaten Old Division 1 and Prem Teams - it is NOT a new phenomenon - but let's ignore that - it is Lambert after all isn't it?

Naz - the issue is a fundamental one though. As you know, you and I have followed Villa for a heck of a long time now and you rightly say we have had cup upsets in the past. I remember very well losing away at Cambridge on a Tuesday night in the days of Saunders, BUT under Lambert there has become an increasing regularity to the embarrassment of these far more than we have seen previously.

Also I think that all aspects of club's football from first to other teams reflect a managers philosophy and we are seeing that a lot of the other teams struggling to build into any sort of attacking philosophy and plan B etc. I saw this at the start of the season when we played Chesterfield, a team made up of mainly fringe players played exactly as we have seen from the first team for the past two years, with a complete inability to change things etc. It's no good saying these players are not first team, because they are involved in the training sessions so you see what is happening behind the scenes etc.

Let's hope he can turn it around but there is little, IMO, real evidence that the previous two years dross is going to significantly improve this year - but hey lets hope it does because that will mean we are doing well

  13. The past two games, the opposition could have played with no goalkeeper and we still would not have scored. We really are pinning our hopes on Benteke coming back like he used to be and keeping fit for long periods. The same goes for Vlaar, if only to bolster his transfer value.

quite right and you can extend that further. Look at the newcastle poor impression of a match. Trying to hide behind the fact we played arsenal and chelsea misses a key fundamental issue on lack of attacking creativity. This is something that has been part of the lambert tenure pretty much throughout with the odd exception.

It seems to be excuse after excuse year on year, vlaar injured, benteke injured, okore injured, illness, etc etc, but when you look at the club in general, not just the first team, you see a style of football that is played throughout the club that is bereft on attacking focus.

I appreciate some wont agree but reality does show that despite lerners running of the club, lambert is moulding the playing style of the club into something quite depressing

  14. Drat out of curosity as a die hard labour supporter how would you evaulate miliband in comparison to other labour leaders?

chalk and cheese. As others say politics is pretty poor now and the fact that so many apparently judge on appearance show how far things have sunk. If you ever read about milliband his published views you realise a lot of his principles are admirable. As a leader I don't dislike at all, you can argue there have been better but there may well have been worse but it's a very subjective matter. In uk politics there is no leader of real note , Cameron is one of the weakest I have seen in charge of the Tory party. Clegg is a disgrace . So as leaders go it certainly is not a golden age

  15. With almost any other leader the next election is winnable for Labour. With him it almost certainly isn't. Labour's version of Ian Duncan-Smith.

if it were an American style election then Ed wouldn't have a prayer ... but i'm guessing most people going in the voting both will be voting for the party or the local MP rather than thinking , who is going to be my PM ?

2 years ago a labour landslide looked a foregone conclusion ... the deck is kinda stacked against the Tory party once the lib dems blocked their boundary changes so another coalition looks most likely at present ..just don't know who with .. the Greens may even come into play as they overtake the Lib Dems

a lot will depend if Cameron can pull a homer in the next 7 months ... where's those Argies when you need them

mostly at the bottom of the sea
  16. Do the humane thing and put him down then

"You are a rubbish dog and your tail wags stupidly. All the other dogs have better barks than you and that collar makes you look just plain silly"  .... that should do, it's self esteem will be shot

  17. So what you're saying is go in there like a newborn goat. When she asks me what I do for a living just give her a blank stare then after a while ask "what should I do?"

Tell her you used to work on the dodgems but they sacked you, it's OK though because you are doing them for funfair dismissal
