Also serves as a reminder to how little fans know about football.

Sounds like many of those away fans at Norwich are on VT.

I'm not going to lie, I was calling for him too!

  2. I think it serves to remind some of us that we know very little about how a manager will cope at our glorious club!

I remember our last game of the season under Mcleish - Norwich away... Villa fans serenading Lambert en masse and essentially "choosing" him. The board listened. We were absolute dogpooh.

It’s mad looking back - despite ruining his reputation with Small Heath, Villa fans protesting against his appointment, our best player leaving and minimal funds available to replace him, and ownership of the club almost invisible he still took the Villa job when he should’ve run a mile. Just shows you what a draw AVFC is.

Our two best players that should read (Both Young and Downing left that summer!!)!

It was incredibly defensive, dour football. Far too many draws. It was symbolic of Lerner giving up on Villa, that we had accepted mediocrity, and if you had any ambition don't come to us. Yes he was the fall guy but bar a few decent moments the season was dreadful.  As you said Weimann was a highlight, his winner versus Fulham basically kept us up. We had gone from a solid top 6 club to relegation fodder in 2 seasons.

I agree, it was absolutely dour and dreary but there's no escaping the squad was threadbare and dreadful and I look back at it now and have no idea how we managed to stay up. I don't think he had the tools to do anything other than defend, defend, defend and try nick something on the break.

  5. Controversy here....

Alex McLeish - at times he could only put out a midfield of Chris Herd and Ciaran Clark, he had an out of sorts N'Zgobia with Gabby and Heskey as our main strike partners for about half a season (Bent got a season ending injury if I remember right?) - had the tragedy that befell Stilyan Petrov midway through and our only real consistency was Collins and Dunne. In hindsight a side that should have got relegated, but he kept us up signing Grealish to a longterm deal, blooding in (out of necessity) Andi Weimann and somehow remained dignified throughout, knowing he was up against it from the off joining us from down the road..

Yeah...  He's a left sided CB...  I've watched him play several times for Roma this season.

But but, he's right footed! Surely he can't play on the left side!! (I'm not questioning or doubting anything you're saying here now, I'm just doing the classic reaction seen when we were linked with Torres!)

I all seriousness though, I'm sure like Diego Carlos before him (who is also a right footed cb who's played a lot at lcb) he will very easily adapt to either rcb or RB!

I think Ibanez was our alternative to Torres and not our current RB solution.  He is a ball playing left sided CB who isn't the finished product yet, but has the potential to be one of the best in the world.

Ibanez is a left sided cb? Transfermarkt says otherwise...

It says cb main but also RB and defensive midfielder....

  8. Currently now a free agent and despite everything hasn't officially joined PSG yet. Even just did a google news search and it's just "on the verge" - sorry to tease ;)

Whoever suggested Greenwood has not only ruined my week, they've ruined Christmas too.

Agreed. They may as well have told us that Father Christmas isn't real, they ran over the Easter Bunny and that there wasn't a massive intergalactic space battle in the 70's which culminated in a big techno-orb type thing named the Death Star (cool name by the way) being blown up.

I am hearing we may be in advance talks with a winger/attacking midfield player who is currently on-loan  at Galatasaray, who has Premier League experience

Worse imo. Is it me getting old or are the Mail villa writers getting younger and younger. He looks like a baby.

We're getting older pal. That's all it is.

  12. Local journos on it now, this is starting to have some weight now... Signing a player of his profile should also have a knock on effect to our other targets, make them slightly easier to get.

  13. If we're struggling with "transfer withdrawal" may I suggest some grounding exercises and breathing techniques to help with the anxiety?

Square breathing is good for this.... Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds then rest for 4 seconds. Repeat until you remember the days of what we use to refer to as "potential of signing Carlton Palmer anxiety" and remind yourself that it never happened.

    You're welcome. 😘

In the UK... as Trensa says its a totally different culture that he's part of.

Can he start now or has he got to wait till 1st July? I read we'd bought out his notice embargo, but can't remember seeing if he can start immediately.

I thought he was just waiting a work permit, because of Brexit.
