Ed Chamberlain picks Westwood as one of his five stars of the season so far

    3. Ashley Westwood

In the summer it seemed fashionable to tip Aston Villa for the drop and they were well backed with Sky Bet to do so. It's early days but that looks unlikely now.

Winning at home, where they struggled for so much of last season, will give Paul Lambert a huge boost. Their next five games are absolutely brutal but Villa remain masters at pulling off a shock and are still the Premier League's hardest team to predict for punters.

Ashley Westwood remains a model of consistency in midfield. Westwood’s strength is his efficient passing style, which means his best work often goes unnoticed. This season he has looked more dynamic and with Fabian Delph's England call-up, plus Tom Cleverley's arrival, Westwood is set to kick on to the next level.

Some Villa fans still dont think he offers that much

Unlike Ed Chamberlain, those Villa fans won't be basing their opinion on 3 games.

God forbid anyone makes  a judgement on current form. Lets judge in last season.

I can only assume those getting in a lather over the intricacies of this move are our younger brethren.

Do you have any idea of the shenanigans that sent on in the seventies over transfers ?!

Had we had rolling news and the internet we could easily have discovered we were not peter withes first choice, for example.....would that have mattered ?

    Get over yourselves !

Welcome aboard to a decent player with his best years ahead of him.

All this made laugh, like a heckling old man with his walking stick.  The 70s !! nobody gave 2 flying shits because it was pennies people were talking about back then, footballers were thugs and football was played in essentially a large shed and not televised. Going to games was dangerous due to the hooligans. The sport was inaccessible to many due to all that.

These days it's a mega bucks industry, people go to games in no fear of being attacked by scum and thanks to technology it means you can follow a club from wherever you want in the world.

Footballers were thugs? George Best, Dennis Law, Bobby Charlton, Alan Ball, Eddie Gray, Andy Gray, Brian Little, Gordon Cowans, Trevor Francis? All great British footballers. I started going to games home and away in the seventies and the only time I thought I was in any danger was the Rangers friendly at home. The sport was inaccessible to many? Jesus, what planet are you on. The majority of fans were under 35 now it's over 40 years old.

  3. I'm sorry but Money matters a HUGE amount to every person in this country so why shouldn't it matter to a footballer? Especially when he wasn't getting a fortune at United. He has another 7 years of earning potential for the rest of his life, his next contract is the most important one he'll sign in his life. He should do what he feels best for himself, stop giving him stick for making decisions in the best interest of himself and his family.

Well when £1.5 million a year is not considered a fortune we are in trouble.

Cleverley putting a lot of eggs in his Everton basket it seems, was not prepared to lower demands and it was #avfc who walked away

I can't blame anyone at the club for this. I hope Everton don't come in for him, and the greedy word removed rots in the Manure reserves.

FFS how bitter is that? Calling him a greedy word removed just because he didn't want to come here. I doubt he would choose Everton purely for money.

Of course it is. He stays on his United wages for the seasons loan, then he leaves on a free and gets a massive signing on fee and higher salary. It's always about the money.

Bartelt wasn't our first Argentinian. You're forgetting the Arce brothers

Neither Oscar Arce  or his brother  actually played  for  Aston Villa when it was  discovered that  Oscar  was possibly no better than   a  circus  performer  capable of dribbling  and prodigiously  controlling the ball like  a  hacky sack but in fact was an awful footballer .

Over the years  there has been an urban myth  about  Oscar Arce  because at the time Aston Villa  also had a good Welsh International player, Barry Hole on  the team  and  the pub  rumours always  questioned  what it would look like  if Aston Villa signed Tony Brown  from the Baggies and played them all in the Midfield.

It would have read  Brown  Arce  Hole .

Gustavo Bartelt  was a loanee  from Roma  who  lasted a  whole  3 months   and was named  for the bench   once  and never played.

So if Sebastian Blanco were  to  sign  for  us and actually was ITSOTP he would be   our  first Argentinian to wear a first team shirt.

Well that's a piece of Villa's history rewritten. We did have a midfielder named Brown, Jimmy Brown, although Barrie Hole and Oscar Arce never played with him.

  6. Only bad thing is that once again we will be losing another player and it won't benefit us at all because of the funds MK Dons have. Reckon we'll get a couple of hundred thousand at the most.

He isn't worth that. He's been disappointing in the games I've seen pre-season

  7. I'm confused. The club has asked the supporters club chairmen to agree not to abuse officials of the club on social media. What's wrong with that. It doesn't say they can't criticise it just don't resort to abuse. Surely we gave lions club chairmen who are capable of making a point without resorting to abuse. If they can't they're not fit for office.

  8. I said the other night after chesterfield we are poor and people said its pre season well this season we are going down prepare yourselves lads

Surely you're not using that side as a barometer for the season. Only Guzan and Okore will start the Stoke game from the 1 that played against Chesterfield.

  9. Ron doesn't have to sign a contact with us this summer. We can let his contract run down next season, as you say keeping him will be worth 40 million, so if he won't sign a new contract let it run down. He will be 30 then let's see whose in the market for him then. As Lambert had said, no one leaves unless he says so.

As nice an idea as that sounds it all depends on the player.
in your world maybe but remember Gareth Barry

  11. Yes Lambert's fault that Okore, Benteke, N'Zogbia and Kozak get long term injuries. It would be preparation if we had a lot of short term injuries i.e. strains but to lose the 4 to long term injuries is bad luck.

Okore was injured during a game, Bent eke in training, n'Zogbia in the US and Kozak in a tackle with a teamate in training. Fail to see a pattern or how match preparation can be to blame

  12. What are the odds on us to go down next season?

I think it's a 50/50, we almost certainly will if L&L are in charge for it. At least a betting win would soften the almighty blow.

I think 50/50 are fair odds for us but also for about 9 others as well.

  13. Could it be in a few years time that we are thanking our lucky stars that Lambert didn't quit after he guides us to a top 6 finish under the stewardship of a new owner?

with just a small investment we could finish 9th/10th, they're much of a muchness from there down.

  14. From this news it's apparent that there is no imminent sale and the 2 Paul's remaining is the sensible option. We could still be for sale in September so someone has to run the club and Lerner is never going to sack either of them. If there are limited funds available then Lambert may as well spend them to add to the squad he has built. Benteke is talking about being available in September and Okore will be available as will Kozak. Add some loans and maybe a bit of experience and it may maintain stability until any sale completes.

  15. If it's change for the better in that we get some long term major investment into the club which breeds success then I couldn't give a shit what they do.

just about sums you up, glory hunter at any price!
