Big name players from the Dutch, French or Portuguese leagues are always a realistic option simply due to the lure of playing in the premiership for an ambitious club on the up. I don't think any player from these leagues are beyond us regardless of who they play for and who is linked to them.

Carew, Bouma and to some extent Laurson clear evidence of this.

Why not bid for Huntelaar, Sneijder, Ribery et al rather than Defoe, Sidwell, NRC etc.

Yeah, just go for foereigners with fancy names, they are always better than proven premiership quality....

You can only prove you can play in the premiership once your given the chance. Quality players like the names just mentioned can play in any league and probably cost less than the so called proven premiershop quality. They just may take longer to settle.

Not what im trying to get at is, some of the players we are "unsure of" have been mentioned becuase someones seen there youtube video and think he would be excellent, basically plucking a name out of air that we should get him all cus of this video, even though there has never been no mention of this certain player(s) have been even linked with us.

^I got where you were coming from at the start and sorry if i sounded a bit cheeky with my replies. But surely no fan would really want us to sign a player based on watching a YouTube video? Its just a nice way of looking at what they capable of if never heard of them. But I have to admit plucking names out the air can be a bit tiring but i think its just more of a case of fans being excited about who we will buy with it being to early for the real speculation to begin. So we have to go on anything we can.

I see what you mean but surely not every player has a video made of them. You gotta be half decent and be a favorite of fans for them to go out there way to make a video of your best bits.

I agree with this and also if we were in for him I very much doubt it would be to replace Bouma as the the Portuguese player we are strongly linked to is most likely going to be cover for him.

apparently Steve Sidwell's proposed deal to Chelsea has stalled due to him only wanting a 2 year contract. Maybe theres still hope of signing him.

I think a combination of high wages and serious signs of ambitions can attract big name players but I also hope we can improve our worldwide scouting network and find some young gems on the cheap. Can you believe that Sevilla brought Alves for 300K?! wonder what he is worth now?

It will be interesting to see who the first big signing of the summer will be to determine what level of player we are capable of attracting? or do you feel Carew has already raised the bar?

As much as I hate Man U and it hurts to say this I think everyone of there players would improve our squad.

I disagree Amo, Fletcher, O'shea, Brown, Richardson, Heinze, Sylvestre, Smith and Solskjaer would not take Villa into the top six or to the champions league.

They all contributed to Man U winning the league so how could they not contribute to Villa's squad in helping achieve a top 6 place?

You have to remember I'm talking squad and competition for places here. If these players can do it for United how can we think they are not good enough for us?

Have any of you been watching heinze this season???He has been garbage!Was quality last season before he got injured but he's been truly awful this season.Just because he plays for Man U doesn't automatically mean hes good, would have bouma ahead of him any day.Plus, he'd want big wages and hes getting on.Would be a big mistake signing him in my opinion

He's getting on?? he's 28 years old. At his peak. He has been in and out the team this season so even if he he hasn't been at his best that doesn't make him a crap player all of a sudden. I think we've all seen enough of him over the last few years for both Man U and Argentina to know he is a quality defender! Just needs a fresh start.

wasn't that the same reason we didn't buy Robbie Keane from Wolves when he was desperate to come to us. Or did JG just decide he wasn't good enough. I still remember how gutted I felt when he signed for Coventry instead. He would have been a Villa legend!

Heinze is a great no nonsense defender. I think signing him would be another example of the type of player we want to bring to the club and may also be a catalyst to bring in other players of the same quality. Have we ever had an Argentine or Brazilian at Villa?

I'd be very happy if we signed all four of them players to be honest. All would be great additions but 10 million for Bellamy would be way to much.5-6M more realistic. Would Fabiano get a work permit? not sure how often he has played for Brazil.

Paulo Ferera is a current forum favourite. Bloody overated. Not on our shopping list.

why does everyone say he is overrated. From what I read on this forum and in general he seems to be the most criticizes player in the Chelsea team. He seems a weak link at Chelsea because they have 3 of the best defenders in the world playing along side him and he also looks short of confidence after being dropped for so long. If people think Ferriera is that crap lets have some suggestions of who would be a better signing.

I still think Paulo Ferreira could do a job for us at right back. I know a lot of fans feel he isn't good enough but how can a player who has just played in a FA Cup final and a Champions league semi final be that bad??? The same fans who say he is crap seem to hope we buy Luke Young! shocking IMO.

He is being realised because crap like Man City can not accommodate a talent like Trabelsi. In a similar way West Ham couldn't handle Mascherano.

I think the star should be saved for the future Champions League games and not for the league. Then hopefully in the future we can add to the stars.

I hope our scouts are scouting leagues all over Europe and maybe even South America as we speak. The Heinze's, evra's, Vidic's, Eboue's Toure's of the world are all the type of player villa can attract before the big clubs come in. Only thing is these players need time to settle and thats something villa fans never appear to be happy with.
