  1. Seeing as things are quiet, maybe it's time to suggest a possible explanation for events over the last 10 days, which will a) be food for discussion and B) annoy briny_ear (mwahahahaaa).

    - The club get in contact with OGS, having done a bit of homework on him.

    - Initial discussions are good, and he tentatively agrees to become the Villa manager, but doesn't want to drop Molde in it.

    - RL flies him to Brum for further talks but there's a leak and Molde's financial backer finds out.

    - There is a surge of support from Villa fans for the idea of OGS as manager.

    - The proverbial tomato hits the fan in Norway and Rokke threatens to withdraw his support. OGS is not happy with Rokke

Now the next bit is a combination of wishful thinking and wishfully-reading-between-the-lines:

    - OGS realises if he ups sticks Molde will be left without financial support, but he still wants to manage Villa.

    - OGS and Villa have further talks where a cunning plan is hatched.

    - OGS and Rokke sign a new contract, whereby Rokke commits his finances to Molde in return for a change in OGS's contract.

    - The change in OGS's contract improves the terms for Molde, but not to a price that Villa aren't willing to pay.

    - OGS resigns himself to managing Molde for an unspecified number of additional games (until the 1st of June, say).

    - Villa bide their time before putting in an offer for OGS.

    - Molde accept the offer, since they are assured of Rokke's backing and are getting a nice payout from Villa.

    Well?

Not that far-fetched but I can't see Ole going back on his word having made a very public statement, he just doesn't seem like that kind of person to me. I think it's more likely that we have a first-choice and Ole was impressive but not enough to usurp him. Why it is taking so long is anyone's guess.

  2. You know Warnock wasn't always that bad. In fact I sometimes wonder why everyone has it in for him, Dunne and Collins, wasn't so long ago they were an incredibly impressive defensive unit under MON. While Warnock clearly is no longer the same player, I actually still rate Dunne and Collins as above average Premier League CBs.

True, we needed a left-back and he had been excellent for Blackburn and on the fringe of the England squad, in his mid-20s. £8m was a fair price at the time. It's more the wages and length of contract that were a disaster, added to the multitude of other disasters O'Neill saddled us with.

  3. The Citeh tax might drop eventually, and the public perception of them will just become what it is of Chelsea.

It will no doubt drop to a point. I still harbour a hatred towards Chelsea because of what they did, but they never did it to Citeh's degree. I think Citeh's 'tax' will stay very high for a long long time. And United never had the concerted spending that Citeh have had. United's has been organic growth with a big signing here or there. They've done it the 'right' way over time.

Utd were fortunate in that their domination started at the exact same time as the Premier League explosion, as well as the Champions League going from strength to strength. This allied to the fact that they could add 30,000+ seats to Old Trafford with an ease that the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs and Chelsea have struggled meant their wealth outstrips everyone else's to such a degree that without the billionaire oil barons buying clubs, the Premier League would be so uncompetitive that it would be a joke. It would be even worse than Spain being a shootout between Barca and Real.

  4. This is brilliant, today, via various ITK's we've been in discussions with GMac, Roeder, Hoddle, Poyet, Rafa and now Martinez

Yeah, it's almost as if nobody has a **** clue what's happening. I have to tip my hat to Randy for that at least, assuming he does actually have a **** clue what's happening himself.

    He doesnt.

This is no different to the past two appointments....

    A woeful list of candidates.

    Nowt happening for weeks

    Countless Favourites

    People turning us down.

I reckon that's a bit harsh. It's been less than two weeks and the statement on what the club wants is a bit more encouraging this time round, and who we have been linked with aren't woeful for the most part.

  5. We've approached FSW, as I mentioned the other day. I still don't think he'd come, I'm not a huge fan of his...but it'd be HUGE because that would mean RL is ready to spend the $$$ and back a manager to get us back towards Europe.

Excuse the ignorance but who is FSW? I'm racking my brains and can't work it out

Rafa Benitez = Fat Spanish Waiter

Haha **** how did I miss that. Not sure he'd be a good fit tbh

  6. really hard to tell who they are going to go for now.

    young, enthusiastic and vibrant.

out of your list MM that woudl appear to rule out...

    Ranieri

    Hoddle

    KMac

    Bielsa

    ..for age.

then a few more for vibrancy...

    Southgate

    Grayson

    Bradley

    Clarke

then Lambert says not going anywhere, Martinez turned us down last year and in talks with liverpool.

doesn't seem to be a lot left!

zola would get us playing possession football and with steve clark be a good pair but wouldn't go down too well with the fans because of his record as a manager.

OGS has ruled himself out after no offer from teh club when he'd basically asked to be given the job.

young and vibrant and italian, there's devis mangia. sacked at palermo last year who started pretty well and is still young. not sure where he is now! there's walter mazzari who's 50 but has just won the cup with napoli and more than likely wouldn't be interested.

bilic? wouldn't be able to have much of a preseason as will be at the euros.

    deschamps? very doubtfull.

    blanc? ditto.

who the f*ck is this young and vibrant manager?

Guardiola :) Seriously by deduction it leaves Poyet or Di Matteo, unless they can convince AVB. Does Rijkaard still count as young? I'd love a bit of Dutch flavour at the club but I think he's manager of Saudi Arabia which I would have thought is rather well-paid.

  7. Really pissed off that we didn't just go for him. I'm not going to start calling for Randy to go or anything but I'm getting pretty fed up with them right now. What the **** are they doing?

Well, on the basis that RL and/or PF have actually met and held discussions with OGS (rather than just watching a YouTube video and whipping themselves up into a frenzy), one has to assume that they know more about him than you and have valid reasons for not pushing more aggressively for a deal.

We've also only been without a manager for 10 days. I don't understand why people are panicking. Liverpool and West Brom haven't filled their manager positions either and are probably at a similar stage of recruitment as us. Solskjaer is the only one we know that has been interviewed and that was just by pure chance that Treesy works at the airport. I can be certain that the club hasn't spent the last 10 days just trying to get Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and he's stuck two fingers up at them. It sounds like they have someone they prefer to Solskjaer and are taking their time to make sure it is done properly.

  8. Randy may as well go if he gets this wrong, in my opinion the only man for the job now is AVB, if he's just going to appoint someone average Di Matteo, Curbs, Martinez just throw in John Gregory at least he loves the club and wouldnt be thinking about a cv.

Not sure about that, Di Matteo did much better with Chelsea than AVB by getting the best out of the players rather than upsetting them. We saw with Houllier how successful coming in and upsetting everyone is. Either way I'm sure AVB will be eyeing up a much higher-profile job than the Villa, no matter how much Randy wanted him.

  9. I dont understand why any remote reason is used to sharpen then knives and come out kicking off at RL/PF?

Anything and its on them its seems, it makes no sense and doesn't help anything imo.

Once again we're a big part of the problem and we need to be careful that we dont become and un-manageable club because of our distaste to the owners and any new manager.

'Support' is a very loose term round VP it seems.

Absolutely, they get far too hard a ride as far as I'm concerned

  10. My feeling is that they did make it clear he was first choice but Molde have made it as difficult as possible for him, and he's decided to have a go at qualifying for the Champions League, with the family reasons just an excuse to save everyone's reputation. He's still young after all and will get a chance at some point in the Premier League, no need for him to rush. It would have been nice if it came off but shit happens.

  11. OGS all day long. I want fans back at VP create an atmosphere and playing good football. OGS is a risk and its exciting and will bring the fans back IMO.

If we get OGS I will be looking forward to next season a lot, Lambert is a good manager and while I dont have a problem with him at all I will just be slightly disheartened that its not Ole.

I agree totally. I'm sure Randy wants above all else VP to be full every week and linking us to Solskjaer has certainly galvanised the support, judging from on here. There is something that just feels right about him, but it will take time for changes to take place.

  12. anyone know who his number 2 is in Norway? Should get Martin Laursen in, just to top it off.

That youtube video had a Manc coach, can't remember his name, who he clearly took from the reserves with him. I think we could genuinely expect him to try and follow the Fergie model. I'd also love Laursen to come back but I think he'd be a better manager in his own right in the long term.

  13. One thing is depressingly predictable - whatever happens there will always be some Villa fans who will moan about it.

That's the biggest problem. This talk of wanting someone for the next 3 years, he'll probably get half of Villa Park booing if it's still 0-0 at half-time on the first day of the season. Just hope everyone will be grateful that it isn't McLeish any more and really support the team next season.

  14. I would feel more comfortable with Poyet with Steve Clarke to help out. I worry a bit about managers that haven't had a bad period which they have come through and gained experience to fall back on when things inevitably get a bit tough. I think that is why AVB 'failed' at Chelsea. But I obviously base this on no knowledge of how Molde played last season or how Ole handles himself as a manger. He was one of the few United players I didn't physically hate and would support him 100%. It's certainly a lot more imaginative than getting McLeish in.
