The most common explanation is that "Grand Teton" means "large teat" in French, named by either French-Canadian or Iroquois members of an expedition led by Donald McKenzie of the North West Company. Because of heavy snowfall at the top, the pass is usually open each year only from mid May through mid October, weather conditions permitting. Justin Posted June 8, 2011 Author Share Posted June 8, 2011 Beartooth was still closed but otherwise Yellowstone was stunning. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in wildlife and untamed beauty.
