Would everyone kick off again if we tried to get McClaren? He's done very well with Derby...

I think that ship has sailed, especially if they get promoted. Lerner should've hired him instead McLeish even if some fans would've been upset.

Probably right unfortunately. Also he's probably got more sense than to come here.

  2. Everytime Lambert opens his mouth, it makes me dislike him a little bit more. Which is a shame as I really wanted him back in 2012.

Only 'clever' people will understand Randy Lerner's statement, says Paul Lambert

PAUL Lambert insists Randy Lerner’s statement about the future of Aston Villa was “pretty clear” – and claims anybody left confused is “not clever”.

Lerner, renowned for saying nothing, made two declarations last week. the second of which stating that he would address the club’s fate at the end of the season.

On rumours of a potential sale, Lerner said: ““Following the point yesterday at Villa Park, there have been stories about my selling the club... As regards my personal role at the club and the steady rumours of a sale, I will address these after the season.”

Some supporters felt Lerner’s words added to the confusion and fuelled rumours rather than quelling them.

But Lambert said: “His statement to me was pretty clear,. He will address everything at the end of the season and I think everybody’s got to respect that.

“This is his club so you’ve got to respect his decision. It will become clear  I’m pretty sure when he decides to say what he’s got to say. I’m totally relaxed about everything.

“I’m not uptight about anything. We’ve got to try and win football matches, which was always the case.

“He’s obviously come out and said that I had to work within parameters that he’s set so everybody’s got a clear indication of that. But he’s the owner of this club and has been a fantastic owner since he worked in.

“I think if people read into the statement and are quite clever about it they’ll understand. If you’re not clever you’ll not pick it up. That’s the bottom line.”

  3. If Lambert and Given don't mind working with each other, this could be a good move.

Shay's got years of experience which could be invaluable. He'll also put his heart into if he knows his number is up at keeping goal in the higher leagues.

Get behind the lads - plain and simple.

Always do, alot of people don't though, hence our poor form at home.

1-0 up against Stoke and people started moaning and the atmosphere was non-existant. Complete contrast to the Chelsea game.

Rubbish. You think its the fans fault we set a new club record for home defeats?

No, I didn't say that (putting a question mark at the end of sentence doesn't make it ok to imply people said that either), but we certainly don't help.

    You said.

alot of people don't though, hence our poor form at home.

I didn't say it lead to ten home defeats, you implied that.

What I am saying is, when fans are booing and swearing at a player after 5 mins because of a misplaced pass or such like, it knocks his confidence and therefore they won't take any chances after that and play it safe.

    That affects form.

  7. I really think that we've sleep walked into relegation. This entire season we hadn't been below 13th, now we've hit terrible form and it will take us a while to respond. Hard to see us collecting 2+ points.

I think a team will go down on 36 points by the way.

  8. Can we apply the Clough logic of if the manager goes, the man who hired him should go too?

I think Lambert could've done better in some ways but I'm sick of managers being used as scapegoats. The problem is the one constant in all of this, the owner and the board.

Take this with a pinch of salt, but it does come from an associate in Liverpool who rarely tells me stuff, but what he does tell me normally comes close to the truth.

Apparently Gareth Barry will turn down a three year contract at Everton in favour of a 4 year contract at the Villa, with Everton supposedly offering £75k per week.

Doesn't sound like the new Villa to me, but who knows?

I hope were not offering anything near to that, dontg get me wrong i like Barry, but hes what? 33 years old? Would be mental to sign him for that long on anything near 75k

Player / Team coach? I'd take that.

While some criticism of Lambert is justified I personally think much of it, particularly in this thread is over the top and pays far too little real attention to the circumstances in which he has managed for the duration of his time at the club. The role of our absentee owner, sorry custodian, and what conditions and even requirements have been set.

I don't expect those who have firmly nailed their colours to the mast in relation to Lambert to change their minds, or even accept any of the following but for those more on the fence and yet undecided perhaps it will be of more interest.

JOSE MOURINHO is the Special One. David Moyes, the Chosen One.

With every passing week Paul Lambert looks increasingly like The Shafted One.

The Aston Villa boss has been butchered by furious fans complaining about his work on local radio phone-ins this week.

Bu it’s time they targeted the true source of their problem.

It isn’t the poor patsy in the dug-out, it’s the billionaire calling the shots on the other side of the Atlantic they should expect more from.

Randy Lerner has reached a crossroads with Aston Villa in his eighth season as owner.

He chucked cash at Martin O’Neill but hit a financial ceiling as Villa fell short of the Champions’ League.

The American also dug deep to wipe out £100million of club debt, while donating £1million to Acorns, the children’s charity Aston Villa sponsor.

For these reasons, Lerner does not deserve to be declared the Villan of the piece.

But two seasons ago he decided to tighten his belt and slash expenditure — drastically.

He examined the squad he had assembled and saw £24million Darren Bent and £10million Charles N’Zogbia trousering £60,000 a week — in a stale squad of serial relegation dodgers.

So he brought in Lambert, a manager who had worked on a shoestring budget at Norwich.

He then gave him two seasons to gut the place and replace high earners with guys willing to do the same job — on Championship wages.

The trouble is Lerner didn’t bother to tell the Villa fans any of this.

He simply headed for his bunker across the pond — leaving Lambert to deal with the fallout.

The Villa boss kept his side of the bargain to slash costs.

Now it’s time for Lerner to cut him some slack and let him start building Villa up again.

This season’s new broadcasting deal means even the club which finishes bottom rakes in £63million — £3million more than Manchester United earned for winning the title last year!

Plenty of clubs dipped in to invest some of that windfall last summer.

Southampton spent £35m on three signings — that’s more than the £33.85m Lambert has spent in FOUR transfer windows at Villa.

The Scot spent £15m this season on NINE players.

Striker Libor Kozak — who cost £5m — hit four goals in eight Premier starts before breaking his leg and £4million Danish defender Jores Okore started twice before a cruciate knee injury ended his debut season too.

And now Christian Benteke’s is out for six months.

Despite the crippling blows, Lambert currently looks down on seven clubs below him in the table.

Every one of those clubs has spent way more than him.

It’s why Lerner hasn’t joined the other seven owners in changing manager — because Lambert has done everything asked of him.

The former European cup winner was regarded, with Roberto Martinez and Brendan Rodgers, as one of our brightest young managers two summers ago.

Now his reputation has been severely damaged while carrying out his thankless task.

He will probably limp over the line, battered and bruised, having kept Villa up again.

But like Villa supporters, Lambert needs to feel the love again from Lerner.

You can't argue with that. For all the lies and half-truths coming out of the club, I do want to see what Lambert can do for 1 more season and with a bit of investment.
