  1. Only saw the 2nd half today, thought his positional play was good, he always plays better when he has more men around him but I stick with saying he's not the great player that people seem to think he is when he's in a 2 man CM. He looks a much better player when he gets in more advanced positions, definitely not a good holding CM at the PL level.

Dont think anyone is saying he is a great player, but a bloody good player and clubman for the team. Was not too chuffed to see him made captain, but has proved me totally wrong. Having the likes of Herd and especially Clark alongside him is giving him the chance to go forward more. Best player this season for me as well

But my problem is many people on here do actually think he's a fantastic player, as in he's better than Modric, Parker, Mascherano, Barry etc, I could name more. I've always thought he's just too slow and not quite at the pace of the English game for the most part, although he has had some very good games and played well the 2nd year he was here.

I'd put Given, Gabby and possibly Dunne ahead of Petrov for player of the year, the rest of them apart from Herd have looked ordinary.

  2. Should've played a lot more over the past 2 years!

my only concern is that he impressed again at right back. Against the likes of chelsea we know he can do a job there. against the likes of swansea then i believe hutton can offer us a better option going forwards.

I'm not sure, its the same as the Young Cuellar debate. I always liked Young at RB, but I think I prefer Cuellar to Hutton even at home to Swansea...that's if our attack continues to click.

  3. I have never been a fan of AML, but I reckon that in the last three games he has changed his attitude and vision of football acknowledging the fans' demands.

Today the team selection, with Super Mark, Zog and Cjaran in the starting XI, was for 10/11 fine, included Cuellar for Hutton as RB.

After the first 20 minutes of the second half, when we were crushed in our box he played a second striker instead of the 5th defender (as many feared, I suppose) and a creative midfielder like Barry Bannan.

It's the third game in a row that the team try and play a passing football instead of the long balls of the beginning.

AML is changed, and if he keeps to make the team to play a positive, entertaining, passing football, we must change our attitude and support him without reserve, imo.

    Thoughts?

I think its interesting how recently Mcliesh has been saying were looking like a team hes trying to coach. Maybe hes been trying since he started, and its just not come off? Maybe.............. :D

I think he's been trying to build a solid team that can hit on the break but hasn't had an in form Ireland or someone else to make things work.

  5. a question which hasnt been asked

hes in his 30s now, do we keep him till he cant go anymore and retires, or do we sell him soonish whilst we still can and get a mil or so for him? to which, ireland will probably be his replacement

    Get rid!! haha

  6. Don't rate him, he's been very average again this season, at best. Hasn't been as bad as he was last season though, probably because he hasn't been as defensive.

Views like this often come from those who have never played, or understand the game

Petrov gets through an amazing amount of work, which usually goes unnoticed by the layman. He's been out best player this season

Agreed!! Such a good player how people can say his no good is beyond me.

Im amazed people criticise Stan so much. I love it when people mention how bad he was last season but seem to forget after he was bought back into the team last season after being left out we had an upturn in results. Coincidence?????? I think not

If memory serves me right Petrov was brought back into the team mid season then dropped because of his form. He was then brought back into the side after we beat Everton (i think) and the side went on a good run. However, that run didnt just coincide with Petrov coming back but also with a few other first teamers getting back to full fitness.

At the time he was much needed and I agreed to that, but only because we were struggling so badly. My point is Petrov's a half decent player in a very average team and no more.

Opinions are opinions and everyone is entitled to one, but that opinion is just wrong mate. Sorry

Petrov has been one of our most consistant and impressive performers...this year

claret75 are you watching the same team as me??? wed be **** without petrov look at us when hes not in the team compared to when he is. Best player at the club by a mile!!

For me one of the best CM performance of the season was Swansea away. We had Herd and Delph playing in that one and while Delph didn't look too good, they actually worked very well as a pair, much better than Petrov had played with anyone this season.

So are you saying I've never played the game? FYI I've played at a high enough standard when I was younger and could've made pro.

Petrov is one of the most overrated player I've seen at Villa. I'm not saying he's the worst player in the PL, but when people talk of him being one of the top CM's in the league (which many have in the past) I laugh. He does bring experience to the side and we do need him in some capacity at the moment, but that's only because we're struggling so much. He IS a solid pro, but no more than that.

Is he a better player than Scott Parker, Charlie Adam, Arteta, Suarez (CF I know)? No way, but I heard so many people saying they wouldn't have these players here because they weren't good enough or not better than what we had ie Petrov. It's a joke.

Opinions ARE like arseholes, everyone's got one, but I'm wrong? That doesn't make sense.

Petrov's been crap again this season, it's just that seeing him playing in a more average side than we're used to watching makes him look slightly better than he is. He's scored 2 very good goals, but apart from that he flatters to deceive.

  10. He can't take the club anywhere, but he is a safe bet to keep us in the PL after a very dodgy season. I don't mind a season of mediocrity as long as he doesn't stay here after.

Lerner didn't look too impressed in the stand on Saturday.
