  1. Love how he wins pretty much every 50/50 battle in the midfield.  He is also much stronger than he looks.  He held off bigger players like Lerma and King with ease.  When you consider it was his Prem debut and within a minute your keeper gives away the worst penalty ever he had about as good of a game you can ask for.

  2. So, having rewatched the match I didn't see many negatives. Obviously the two mistakes so early is just something that can't happen in the future. Other than those 2 crucial errors I thought we barely put a foot wrong.    One thing I did notice that could be a slight worry going forward was our fitness.  We look absolutely done by the 80th minute. Bournemouth has some of the best running stats in the league but that's 2 games in a row we look dead on our feet when the game was on the line.

Also, given that Aston Villa has been down in the championship for most of Bournemouth prem existence I had no idea how cynical of a team Bournemouth was.  The diving, play acting and time wasting was really over the top. Hearing about Bournemouth's attacking flair all week I expected better.

Was it no pen or debatable?

I definitely thought it was a pen.  It was shoulder to shoulder but he just ran him over. Judging VARs use this weekend the Prem is looking to minimize it's interference. It's gonna take a lot to overturn a refs decision on the field.

  4. No one has mentioned his assist for Mcginns goal. Looked exactly like the ball he played to Andre Green last year for another Mcginn goal. Love that both our CBs can hit a pass.

  5. Him and Mings together were so good. Throw in Heaton and we are going to shut out more than a few teams this season.  Also, correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure Engels played that killer ball that put Trezeguet clean through in the first half.  All in all a great debut.

Me been looking quite a few forums of other teams, and it seems hardly anyone at all rates our summer business, and I kind of see where they coming from whilst not agreeing with them.

I have noticed that as well. Thankfully, I have also noticed that pretty much the consensus is that we are not going to go down this season.  Honestly that is the goal.   Consolidation.  If you are expecting anything more than survival you are probably going to have a rough time.  Let this young team gel and improve.  We had to spread 120-130 million on pretty much a whole new first 11.  You have to admit for Premier League quality that is spreading it a bit thin.  There are probably going to be a couple misses.  Hopefully next summer we can spend half that on 2 players, inject some serious quality into the squad, and push on up the table.  In Dean I trust but he still hasn't even had a full year at the club.  I know a lot out there are ready to be back where we belong but I think its going to take a bit.  Hopefully the fans and Ownership give Dean a fair shake this season, especially when we hit that rough patch.

when jack was off with that shin injury, what exactly was the injury?, was it some form of shin splints or something?

Pure speculation on my part but given his age, how long he was out, and no mention of any type of surgery I would guess he had some kind of stress reaction or even a stress fracture in his lower leg.  The recovery time is usually 2-3 months and pretty much just involves staying off of the affected leg so the bone can heal.  The club released a video of Jack maintaining fitness while running on one of those weight reducing treadmills and they had him strapped to a "exogen bone healing system" at one point in the video.  I couldn't find any official word so just my best guess.

A poor player who found a bit of form at Brentford. Nothing more to say really.

Sadly that is where I am at now as well.  I want nothing but the best for him but I don't see the quality we need going forward in him.  I feel like to succeed in the prem you need at least one or two elite talents.  For example Elhomandy is the by far the best crosser of the ball in the squad.  Another one, Connor has a wand of a left foot that has bailed us out on multiple occasions.  I don't feel you can say the same about Hogan.
  9. That's a really good point about them all bringing something different.  Konsa is great option when we are going to have a large portion of the possession.  You can then switch him out with a larger/more physical CB like Engels or Hause for a Steve Bruce long ball side.  Really good options to have.

Adomah isn't a central midfielder, Gary Gardner is terrible, Tshibola is a complete unknown with an atrocious injury record and Jedinak is bang average and the wrong side of 30. McCormack was an unnecessary signing with no resale value regardless of wether he flops or not. McCormack is not an attacking midfielder either. If we needed one we should have signed one. Square pegs in round holes yet again at Villa park and rather unsurprisingly it's not working.

With the way this team has been setup the signing of McCormack truly is puzzling. McCormack likes to drop into the hole problem is so does Ayew and Grealish also likes to float in from wide position. For 12 million he just seems awfully redundant.  I would have much preferred, as you mentioned, an actual attacking midfielder or another athletic central midfielder terrier/harasser.

  11. We really miss the creative energy that GB brought to our center midfield. Its tough for young to impress when he consistently receives the ball at the halfway line and not deeper in our opponents half. Also Young has to beat two guys regularly just to get off a cross since teams are now shading there defense to his half since they dont have to worry about any attack coming through the center.

Oh and the Wolves game we just didn't come to play. The fact that we played that poorly and still almost won means something right. I think this draw will have the boys good and fired up going into Goodison next weekend.
