Except Sigurdsson a lot of the players would struggle to get game time in the top flight. Gunnarsson the Iceland captain was woeful for Cardiff, the winger at Burnley is OK but nothing more

Gunnarsson was one of the best player for cardiff last season and with him on the pitch they got most of their points (injured for few mounths)

Guðmundsson was injured most of the last season but season before he was number 4 overall in assists in premier league for whole season

Sigurdsson is one of 3 best amc in premier league

They are though. After the top 10 teams the standard drops massively. You can never compare international football to Premier League football.

Ok, but when you are in midfield position vs france you are playing against premier league players

and for me and many others who have see him play through the years he main strength is how he position himself and ofcourse in good fitness

Surely if a players strengths are his fitness and graft then it it’s the Championship where he would thrive?

Ive seen him in International football and I admit he does the donkey work well. He is like the water carrier as someone once described the role.

But I don’t get how the Championship being ‘’bulldog’ football as you describe affects his ability to control and pass a ball?  Am I missing something?

I like Thor and it's obvious that he is a player that will always run and work for every minute he's on the pitch, and he's one of those ultimate utility players that can fit in more or less any position in a pinch.

But it's also clear he's not that good. He has ability, but for whatever reason is never quite enough consistently. He's not good enough to be playing more than a handful of Prem games. He struggled in the Championship, in the Prem he's looking at the standard being turned up a notch and all the features you expect of Championship football. You couldn't expect him to be making a lot of appearances and us to have a good season.

But equally I don't think I'd be seeking to sell him unless he was unsettled or a decent offer was made. There's players ahead of him I'd actively look to move on, like Lansbury. He's a good option to have around in case of injury crisis or need to rotate for cup games etc, just for his ability to slot in everywhere.

We can't be relying on him though and if he's making double figure appearances this year something's gone wrong.

Ok, you are estimating him only by hes performance in Championship, have you see him play for national team? And do you think highest international football are closer in quality to premier league than championship?

    Bulldog football?

ya 70% power and 30% teqhniqe = not close to highest international football which is 70%tecnique (postion on pitch , passing and shooting) and 30% power (speaks for itself) similar as premier league

I watched the game. Are you Icelandic or his agent? He's so limited and would get badly exposed in the PL rather than that joke kick around against a MLS team that were going through the motions

Bjarnason has been playing for Icelandic team since 2010. In many of this game he has been one of the best player on the pitch. Euro final 2016 he scored in 1-1 versus Portugal and 1 goal versus France in the same tournement. In this tournement he was playing in the midfield position vs highest quality player in this sport and was always very good. Played in final of world cup 2018 where he took Lionel Messi and bossed him in 1-1 draw in Iceland vs Argentina. Iceland came to both of this tournement automaticly and did send Croatia to playoff for world cup 2018 where they came second in World cup final.

He has been regularly playing vs highest quality midfielders in national team football for example France, where he played and scored in november 2018 in 2-2 draw in Paris. Hes last national game was in june 2019 vs Turkey in euro qulifq 2-1 win for Iceland. Voted MOM in that game. Turkey won France 3 days earlier.

All the superstar midfielders he has play against, and he has been able to do well, and in many cases better than these players.

These kind of players are playing in Premier League,Serie a, Laliga, Bundesliga not Championship. Huge different between bulldog league and highest quality leagues. In that kind of league you will need to have player who has prove themeself against the best like Bjarnason as i have been saying here above.

People here have been saying that he always playes well for Iceland, why is that? Thats because he is in many cases playing in highest quality football with national team, not bulldog football in Championship. To judge him only by hes performance in bulldog football is for me lack of judgement considering hes international exp.

If you look at current Villasquad (apart from african players) there are not a single player who has prove themeself, score against or even play against this highest quality midfielders in the world in biggest final tournements.

Talking about selling this guy from newly promoted unexperienced team is one hell of a joke for me.

Huge asset for this squad considering his experience.

Ps im not his agent – this is just my opinion

Not done anything!! When he has showed hes best he has showed quality that not many in this team has been capable off.Perhaps Grealish.Anonymous? You have sleeping in second half :)

Sorry i meant Bjarnason not lansbury but hes ok

Apart from his goal he was pretty anonymous, I don't think it's after one game that people write him off, he hasn't done anything since joining the club almost three years ago now.

How do you explain his inability since he joined to completely ignore an easy attacking pass or give hospital passes. I know he's capable but his vision is so poor under no pressure some times I feel he'd struggle in my local 5 a side. His shitty passing would've led to 2 chances on goal in the PL but Minnesota had given up by then

Hospital passes!! Ignore easy attacking passes!! you should watch the game from last night and you will see the opposite. And a lots of game on the highest level in international football. Champinship is a bulldog football which is not suitable for Bjarnason.

ya thats only one player with that name. And he showed highest guality in long passes and position ability last night in USA.

He wasn't standout......played pretty well but was rarely put under any pressure.

Goal was great, good run and excellent header but it's not enough to change opinions on him overnight.

Few more performances like that in pre-season and sure, let's start considering him a first team option again.

I respect your opinion, though im totally dissagree about not considering him a first team choise , but who was standout in second half by your opinion?

  13. 3 minutes ago, TRO said:

    Consistency?

If he will play in Premier League he will not be standout player in every match, but he will give the team highest quality in most of theme. Im not saying that hes going to be a starter in every game but for sure he can be very valuable squad player. Player with hes quality are very expensive and by keeping him Villa is saving the money.

You could probably find a suitor for Thor but I think you’d struggle to find a club that would offer the transfer fee and wages required to tempt Lansbury to give up his contract here. We might as well keep him.

Thor was standout in second half. First class long passes, positioned himself at highest. Why should Villa sell that kind of quality?? And buy it somewhere else for huge money?

  15. On ‎02‎/‎07‎/‎2019 at 09:33, Kiwivillan said:

Been better than good at Burnley. Would have him a heartbeat over Thor who is masquerading as a professional footballer

Masquerading as a football player - :)  would be great to have plenty more of that kind of masquerading player in Villa.

Oddly, not that I think we will see him playing again for us but the slower less mental pace of the premier league I think would suit him more.

He's problem is his retention and passing of the ball when under pressure is a bit poor compared to others. In the championship it's all faster so under more pressure.

What about how he possion himself all over the field? Opinion?

  17. 1 minute ago, Zatman said:

because he was average at best in the Championship and PL is a much bigger jump. Not good enough for Premier League

There is huge gap between this leagues and player who looks poor in championship can be decent in Premier League, Boalsie for example, and many many others
