Not an unreasonable perspective, I would say though that Tammy was 3 years younger, and a known quantity in our team, so I'd have been far more confident.

True but Tammy only plays as a striker, whereas Ollie can play across the front, which potentially makes him more valuable.

  2. Very interesting point from the Mail this: (https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/watkins-aston-villa-transfer-brentford-18899154)

    Quote

Villa have finally got their man, a player who scored exactly the same amount as on-loan ace Tammy Abraham did at Villa during the promotion year in 2019 and a question that must be posed is this: would Villa have paid £30 million for Abraham back then? You bet they would have.

How much would Tammy have been worth before a ball was kicked last season??

Wonder if the Athletic writers' might have a different view of things after today. Some miseries will disagree, but even with zero signings this summer I'd have us down for about 13th/14th place. There's no point even bothering to mention the glaringly obvious reasons why for the umpteenth time.

  4. The pressure on this player / the manager to get this player to perform now after this fee!! You've really got to hand it to Brentford and their model.

We've definitely overpaid here. Let's hope it looks a steal by Christmas.

  5. I think I'm inching toward the getting worried camp. I'm too nervous to check the voracity of this link but I've managed to pick the word Percy, and also, I *think* I just took in his scoring figures above.... surely Samatta could get us more than 6 goals across a season, and Wesley scored 6 in half a season. Is King a winger , or a striker? Sorry, I know I could just look myself, but I'm growing disheartened.

Don’t look on Twitter then, that is the definition of Hysteria

One child / bot / moron makes objectionable statement, 1000 people wailing and gnashing their teeth about said statement. Win-win for the attention economy. On and on it goes.

  7. Think it's one thing to struggle to convince Raschia to join up, but quite another when struggling to convince Callum Wilson, as is being reported.

Considering joining the 'Worried about transfers' camp.

For a premier league striker who has played for England and is reportedly on 60k, unfortunately 50k plus bonuses would be the minimum he would accept.

Taylor 4 years ago was on 30k plus, elmo the same so 50k plus bonuses for a first team striker seems reasonable ?

Not really, if you're asking if it is reasonable, or not, I would say not. Kind of on a par with estate agents. Completely disproportionate outlay to the quality of work on offer. Market rate? Yep, sure. But not reasonable by any judgement.

Let's stick to real life stats instead please, he's hit double figures once in 5 years.

My thoughts exactly. It seems very likely an uninjured Wesley would've hit double figures in his debut season in a tough league whilst settling in an unfamiliar culture, and would continue to improve given his age. You could argue that we are buying someone less good than what we already have.

Having said that, I completely trust Smith, and if we go into the new season with Ollie, Wesley & Callum Wilson as our strikers then so be it. Top 8 finish here we come.

basic wage of around 50k pw on a 3 year deal...

This makes me want to cry. For someone arguably as average as we already have is a separate point.
