I listen to a podcast which covers various sitcoms and Dear John was one that they did. They weren’t particularly complimentary. Didn’t hate it, just not enthused by it. From their perspective it comes across like it was John Sullivan finding something to do between series of Only Fools and then running out of enthusiasm for it.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Belinda Lang came out of it positively. 

Successful US remake though, again, as far as I can tell. 

Oh all my groups are tame in their content (mostly). It’s just the name of that one that is a bit edgy and even then it’s done in a self referential in joke. If we had been called “a table of bellends” that would be the group name.

I have another chat which is called “Finland it is”. This is a general chat with the five plus a few others which really just covers birthdays and big news. The name used to be changed frequently, it was changed to the current one because we originally used to chat p(b)olotics in there and based on the policies and the aesthetics of the Finnish leader and her team it was felt Finland are doing well for themselves.

In 2022, after a few heated political discussions, a select group of us formed another group to discuss politics which I hilariously called “The 2022 Committee”. 

I have a chat for Villa with my one Villa mate. Imaginatively called “Villa”. Any non Villa related discussion is done in a separate chat between me and him.

They’re the only groups I have.

I didn’t name it, I’m not sure the apostrophe is in the correct place. 

It’s named that because a former friend called me, our mutual friend (who was the former friend’s best man) and another very mild mannered, perfectly nice friend a “corner of words removed” completely unprovoked. This was one act of unpleasantness on an evening out along with several other acts of unpleasantness. And this night wasn’t the only night in which I or anyone else endured equivalent unpleasantness.

This WhatsApp group chat was initially set up to discuss whether us three (and two others) wanted to persist in hanging out with him. It now acts as the organising chat for social events between the “core” group of five. Though some of the group are still on amicable terms with the aggressive-when-he’s-drunk chap.

The cheating I am referring to in my message is me saying we probably need to eat next weekend when we meet up for a few drinks (“but eating is cheating Mark…”).
 

Early Doors is definitely underrated, but those who like it, REALLY like it. 

Marion & Geoff, I’ve said before I think is incredibly underrated. 

And in the vein of one location set sitcoms, there was a sitcom called The Smoking Room. I remember enjoying that at the time, not sure how it holds up now. 

In the Richard Briers stakes, I think Ever Decreasing Circles is much better than The Good Life. I would love to have just 10% of Peter Egan’s charm in that.

Motherland is a recent good one which I don’t think has been mentioned. 

But now I’m just naming shows I like.

Yep, I remember it dying quite the death when Richard Coyle (Jeff) left the show. It was clear he was the funniest character but until he left I didn’t realise just how much the show was reliant on him.

At least he didn’t say something like “Congo…that’s where the make Um Bongo, yeah?”

 It’s gotta be a win of sorts, right?

Steptoe and Son needs to be acknowledged too just for the impact it had. It’s not exactly the first sitcom, but in terms of the stuff produced in Britain, it’s kinda a Year Zero sitcom.

And no one has said The Thick Of It and I think that’s possibly one of the best, certainly of the past 20 or so years.

Edit - although Pete has referenced “the sweary Scotsman” up above I see so maybe it has kinda been covered.

I always feel slightly weird about putting US sitcoms alongside those from the UK. I just like they’re a different animal and so comparison feels off, somehow.

Anyway, I know it’s dreadful now, but the 7 or 8 years when The Simpsons was wonderful needs acknowledging.

I suppose a good a place as anywhere. Some will have seen this before no doubt.

Bearing in mind these guys talk about football all the time, them flailing about trying to come up with the correct answer makes me laugh however many times I watch it. 

And for those who aren’t familiar, yes they are using a Gary Neville elongated groan as a sort of time’s running out klaxon.

It does read like that. I’m not saying Atwell cheated.

I’m saying it is a fair thing to not want him involved in the first place. It seems a reasonable request (whether Forest requested he not be involved in a reasonable manner before the game is anyone’s guess).

Whether it’s the often quoted 90/10 split I don’t know. I do simply think Emery is both more dedicated to succeed and naturally more intelligent than 99% of other managers. The dedication enhances that intelligence.

Added to that, I think not having a successful playing career (comparatively speaking to his management career) will help fuel that dedication. Making up for it, I guess.

Whether a Luton Town supporter would want a win, lose or draw for Forest, it would make sense not to have a supporter whose team is impacted by the result helping to officiate the game. 

That aspect of the criticism is valid, I feel.

Obviously Castore take a lot of the blame for producing it in the first place.

But did the club simply not have another shirt available? When did they first realise the mistake? It’s all a bit shoddy.
