Just to put a bit on context into that I am about to post. I started working for my current employer almost a year ago and my work is around 50% site based and 50% office based and the 50% office based work I do from home ( I am a highways engineer). Over the last year I have probably met up with collages collectively for meetings around 10 times. The team I work with there are 10 other people and they have all worked together for years.

Today I went into the office for a meeting with four colleagues, including my manager. At the end of the meeting the subject of a local hotel being used to house asylum seekers arose. I then had to sit through some of the worst racism from everyone else in the room I have probably ever heard. To give a flavour of it one person commented (and the rest agreed) that they'd love to have a political party to vote for who said they would get the navy to shoot out of the water any boats crossing the channel with immigrants on , another commented that what this country needs is a Hitler type to take over and a bit of ethnic cleansing and another felt we (I assume he meant white people) would end up being slaves to the immigrants.

I have heard some mild racism (compared with the above) from some of my colleagues before but today I sat there gobsmacked. I have got to be honest though I didn't give my thoughts which would have been the complete opposite from them. Instead I stayed dumb and now I feel really bad about that and feel that I should have spoke up even though my opinions would have gone down like a lead balloon. I just couldn't believe what I was hearing.

What would others have done in the above situation and what should I do now?

Hmmm.  You plus 4 overt racists. I don't think you're going to get much mileage from interjecting tbh. It's easier in a non work setting to engage in progressive discussion on the matter, but I'd probably have done the same as you in that situation

Shame really. Kid's are given homework for a reason and getting AI to do it for them only hinders thier learning and growth (unless the homework is use AI).

Aren't their anti-plagiarism checks in place now for using AI too (or is that just at Universities)?

Too much AI when you were younger? 😉

SNP motion on calling for a Gaza ceasefire tomorrow and Labour under pressure to allow a free vote (Mods - please I beg tell me where the hell this goes, I've opted Labour??). Surely Starmer should just allow his shadow cab and others to vote with their conscience - I  mean it never harms him to be seen as the big mean right winger, electorally in the fabled red wall....

Hmm. You seemingly want him to make a decision, which goes against ALL of his political instincts 😆

As expected marvels reviews has the film as one of the worst MCU movies. Its 3rd of the lowest rated by forbes behind the last ant man and eternals

Its not suprising  the trailer looked awful

Apparently though one of the best mid credit scenes - which is bizarre left for one of the shottest marvel films. But the way disney is these days its no suprise

Yet on rotten tomatoes it's certified fresh with 62% from over 200 reviews, and an audience approval figure of over 80%.

Will probably go and see it with my daughter as she loves the female superhero angle.

My honest answer is I'd do a test to see if I can take time off work

I can be at deaths door with man flu but still feel the need to crack oo, I have that weird guilt over being ill and not going to work (I have it over holidays too)

The two times I've tested positive for corona in general I've been OK, definitely had worse colds, both times took a week off work without a care in the world

So when i have the sniffles I will work and I will test, the minute that test comes back positive I'm off, I'll feel exactly the same, I'll be just as sick but without that line I'm going to work

It's a strange one isn't it.  I guess because there's been a pandemic it feels more legitimate to take time off if you test positive, even if you don't feel overly unwell?

My 11 yr old daughter has just had 2 friends staying overnight. One has just contacted us to say she's tested positive for covid. She  was so very mildly unwell that nobody noticed.

I'm not sure why her mom made her do a test. I'm not sure if her mom will keep her off school if she's basically OK. We're not bothered either way that we were in contact.

I don't see how it's different to any other mild virus? If it had been my daughter testing positive (though I wouldn't do a test so we'd not know) I'd still send her into school if she was well enough to do so.

If she was ill, with whatever virus it was, I'd keep her off.

I don’t think you understood my point.

You expect Israel to behave in a morally better way than we did in NE, Iraq, Afghanistan and with ISIL. The troubles lasted the better parts of 100 years before the dialogue solved it, so by your standard Israel and Hamas has at least 25 years to go.

I'm saying we dealt with it wrong for a long time.

You'd hope there'd be lessons to be learnt there, but ....

So if IRA tomorrow does a terrorist act and kills 4000 people in london you would suggest dialoge and international condemnation? are you joking me.

Correct.  I don't think you solve a terrorism problem with more, amplified terrorism in return

"wow what brave answer" to a question no one asked.

Can you tell me now how many civilian deaths would be justified or acceptable in your view if israel wants to destroy 30 000 or 40 000 terrorists?

    Still zero for me.

how many one israeli life worth to me? i dont count it like that.

I see a terrorist organization who needs to be destroyed i see 40 0000 terrorists who needs to be destroyed i would say for me 80 000 civilian casualties deaths would be acceptable or justified.

Can you now answer the question? If number is zero and war always requires civilian deaths in your opinion what Israel had to do after October 7? nothing?

Seek a peaceful resolution to the Palestinian/ Israeli issue. Dialogue. International condemnation of Hamas. Strengthen defences.

But a lasting peace in the region is not built on war, murder and genocide.

I've personally never been a fan of 'an eye for an eye' or in this case '100 Palestinian eyes for every Israeli eye'.

Still feeling like shit, and now the missus is the same, so I did a covid test. Positive.

No more than a week after having had the jab. Different variant, presumably.

    Hey ho.

Why are people still testing for covid?

AFAIK, there's no isolation required, other than the common sense of not wanting to pass any virus on, be it covid, flu, rhinovirus etc.

We don't test for those latter ones ...
