I think we can safely assume it will be long term based on the photo alone. The man literally never stops smiling. The fact he couldn't muster one for a staged photo means it's bound to be bad news.

oh i'm under no illusions its long term.  But no surgery and a 3+ month return at the end of the season is much better than ACL surgery and missing all of this season and the start of next season.

If in tonight's games Brighton V Wolves game finishes as a draw, and Palace fail to beat Southampton, and and then if tomorrow Leicester get beat by Spurs by three goals or more, then we will move up to eighth in the table.

That will be tough given that Spurs have about 6 available players currently.  According to Conte, Spurs have 287843 players and staff with COVID.  🤔

  3. positive side is 9 points from 5 games.  1.8 points/game

that works out to 68 points over a season... obviously a small sample size, but as many have said, we have only played top3 and mid table sides- so a pretty tough 5 games imo.  Frankly the next 4 matches should be 7 points minimum if we continue on this form.  That would put us as 26 points after 20 matches, on pace for about 50 points for the season.  I see no reason why we cannot surpass that total and challenge 55-60 points.  That would put us in the top6-8 running potentially.  Just getting us within spitting distance of Europe I think would really light a fire under the players- no reason why we cannot make that jump this season.

  4. last I checked we aren't even playing with 'wingers' under SG.  We use two 10's behind Watkins.  Ramsey is not playing RW.  He's playing more as a RAM behind Watkins.  We basically have 5 midfielders in the game.

Favre's age wouldn't be a concern for me either, realistically as much as we all love the romantic idea of a manager coming in and building a dynasty, on average the lifespan of their tenures isn't a huge amount of time, successful or otherwise. If Favre can come in and do a job as he has done more or less everywhere else he's been then even if he were to bounce in, say, three seasons it would be leaving Villa in a much better place than he found the club. He's not a Mourinho type that leaves the place burning down on his way out.

    Agreed.  he's 64.

  6. Based on what I've read about Favre over the past few days (not just the blurb above).  He appears to be a solid option given his track record over his career.

    1.  Develops youth

    2.  progressive attacking style

    3.  very detailed and tactically oriented

    4.  success at getting clubs into Europe

  7. Taken from Wiki...  but here is some info about Lucien Favre and his style, etc etc.

Favre's teams play a dynamic, quick and attacking-minded football where ball possession and change of tempo alternate. This attractive style of play has brought results in every club he has managed. Furthermore, Favre is very skillful tactically, leaving his opponents struggling to penetrate his well-organized sides. His teams tend to shoot less than others but have a high conversion rate, also with shots coming from outside the box. Favre likes the opponents conversion rate to be on the low end. His teams stick out at the wrong end of expected goals statistics. Favre has a reputation of predicting well how opposing teams, coaches or players tend to react in certain situations. To play this style Favre pays attention to details and technique especially one-to-one.

Favre is also well known for his ability to develop talented young players and introduce them into the first team. Under his leadership, Blerim Džemaili, Almen Abdi, Steve von Bergen and Gökhan Inler all made their debut with the Switzerland national team before signing for foreign clubs. In 2007, Zürich became Swiss champions with an average age of 21.5 years. He is also credited with raising the game of German starlet Marco Reus, whose fine performances procured a call up to the Germany national team and a high-priced move to league champions Borussia Dortmund; Marc-André ter Stegen, who eventually joined Barcelona; and Christoph Kramer. Another example of his ability to develop youngsters into widely sought after, talented players is seen in Granit Xhaka, who initially struggled when he joined Gladbach but, under Favre's tutelage, eventually thrived, becoming one of the best central midfielders in Germany and sealing a move to Arsenal for a fee reported to be in excess of €30 million.

  10. Given all the conflicting opinions about DS as a manager.  Maybe we should lock the thread and make two NEW threads:

    Dean Smith IN

    Dean Smith OUT

Then ppl can go to their respective threads and vent accordingly.  Thread with the most pages at the end of the season wins! :detect:

And they’ve already lost their first game.

They are in the EUCL playoffs and already lost 1-0.  They play today at 14:45pm at home.  If they lose they are out. 🤣
