I'm reading Ask the Dust at the moment. It's easily great and hilarious. I haven't got that much of a frame of reference because I don't read loads and loads, but I'd say this one reminds of Hunger by Knut Hamsun and it's also slightly similar to Notes from the Underground by Fyodor dostoevsky. Also apparently it was a big influence on charles bukowski who wrote the forward, I don't know too much about him though.

Ask The Dust is part of "The Bandini Quartet". If you like it you'll love the others.

I only realised after I started the book would have been nice to read them chronologically, but looking forward to the others though.

Chinese investment into the club is most likely now.  :)

With the rumour about Southampton the other day too, interesting thought G.

Probably nothing at all whatsoever but I read elsewhere that apparently there was a Chinese delegation at the Villa v Arsenal match all wearing VIlla scarfs.

The delegation were Japanese apparently. However, the group that apparently had interest in Southampton have now denied it - 'No individual from Wanda Group has ever been in contact with Southampton Football Club, nor has any individual or third part organisation been appointed on behalf of Wanda Group to engage in contact with Southampton regarding any matters related to the acquisition of Southampton Football club.'

Yeah I saw about Southampton. I was quite relieved to be honest. The China thing I got from another Villa forum on this page.

Seeing what happened to the fairly similar Homeland makes me less unhappy that Rubicon only lasted for one season.

I thought Rubicon was really great I couldn't stop watching, surprised it doesn't get much of a mention. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes any of the other usual suspects.

  5. I feel that it became so fashionable to call David Beckham overrated that he kind of became underrated if you know what i mean, it seems people thought because he wasn't running around an hundred miles an hour going past players being the all action hero, that he somehow wasn't all that good, but i thought he was great technically and a great team player.

As for VIlla I sometimes feel that a lot of the players in the O'neil era are overrated they only ever got us up to sixth similar to what was achieved before David O'leary and Graham Taylors second spell. But the way people go on when reminiscing  you'd think we used to play like Barcelona or something.

  6. I'm surprised at the amount of names from Big Ron's team that finished second and then went onto win the League Cup who people consider underrated. So far I've seen mentioned Barret, Teale, Hougton, Parker, RIchardson and Townsend that's half the team, I was only very young and was probably in my own world easily impressed  but I thought they were all fantastic and just presumed everyone else did as well, In comparison to some of those names i wonder if some that have come since are overrated.

  7. This is apparently a denial from the Dalian Wanda Group

"Consequently, a XinJing reporter sought confirmation from Wangda Dalian. Wangda Dalian CEO Wang Jianian replied that to date nobody from the company had ever been in contact with Southampton, nor had any agent or third party discussed the issue of a sale. Such a suggestion was purely fictitious and did not tally with the facts".

    Doesn't mean they won't though I suppose.

After the edit looks like John Williams is about to be named as the Chief Exec.

  8. The only audiobook I ever heard was Ten Days in a Madhouse by Nellie Bly from the librivox website I thought that was quite good the girl reading put a lot of effort into it, doing all the voices and everything. The others I tried listening to though weren't quite as good. I have to read because sometimes I need to go over a things a few times before I understand, especially in non-fiction.

@bigadamsport: I'm informed that Cortese-Chinese consortium #saintsfc takeover story is well wide of the mark

They are known to get things wong.

I see, we'll just have to wait and see how it plays out, the guy who wrote the article in the Mirror has accused Sunday Supplement of being jealous because they didn't mention his story on a feature they did on Southampton, so he must be fairly confident at least. I think when Villa get sold I think it will just be announced all of a sudden.

  10. .

If Randy Lerner has put a £250 million price on the club, can't he sell us to this guy? Richest man in China interested in buying Southampton. He has a lot of coins.

Local BBC radio in Southampton have tweeted that the story about the Wanda Group buying Southampton is wide of the mark, I think they're supposed to announcing a new Chief Executive tomorrow as well.

  11. I just watched Szindbad on Youtube, it's meant to be a forgotten masterpiece of cinema. It was quite good, wouldn't mind an archival copy with better picture quality and subtitles. I can see why it get's mentioned alongside Tree of Life, guy looking back on his life and shots of nature and stuff.

  12. Having watched 12 Years a Slave I didn't think it was that great, but then again maybe the medium doesn't stand a chance tackling a subject like this. I was interested in the story though and my eyes lit up to see that it was based on an actual memoir.

Also watched Days of Heaven I thought  that was really good I thought the best thing about it was the young girl's narration, apparently she made it all up herself as she went along, whoever she is she should write some of her thoughts down and release them as a book.

  13. I think the reason they're choosing Southampton is because of already having business presence in the area I'm not sure what exactly though might be something to do with ship building. As for Everton I know they are always mentioned as a club for sale but I think some of the fans feel that in reality Kenwright just won't let go of the club, don't know if that's true or just something they say out of frustration. It's come to something though when you have to hope your club gets taken over by people with tens of billions of pounds in order to compete, the way it's going even Red Bull would struggle.

  14.

I'd seen on their forums that apparently the richest guy in China was meant to interested, part of the Dalian Group I think it was.

I heard something but didn't believe it.

I think this Dalian Group already have interests in the area and that's how the rumours began. It kind of reminded me of the whole QIA thing with us, so I didn't really believe it myself. Now with press reporting it you never know, I guess it's looking more likely.
