I've watched him play, for our U21s, u23s, first team, for Solihull, Preston, and for England U21s.

Great. So we're arguing from the same position.

Pretty much every striker that's had a run of games for England at U21 level scores goals, the opposition aren't great, three of England U21's top four goal scorers are Nketiah, Berahino, and Solanke, pretty sure not many would take any of those.

That's not to put Archer down, just that we shouldn't read too much into him scoring in these games when it comes to deciding whether he's ready for our first team or not, also in the Championship last season his goal scoring record wasn't actually much better than Davis', in fact Davis had a better goals to minutes ratio, again not putting Archer down, can view that as more of compliment to Davis.

It's not just about whether he's ready for our first team either, it's about whether it would be well unfair to keep him with us as third choice when he could be getting invaluable experience elsewhere, have to remember he didn't play much at Solihull and only joined Preston second half last season, so for someone who will turn 21 next season he doesn't have a lot of first team experience, needs to be getting as much as possible next season.

I have actually watched him play TBF.

Edit - and I would absolutely take Nketiah as 3rd choice next season, and Berahino's issue was application not ability. Who was the 4th of the top four U21 goal scorers? I notice you only listed 3?

Best striker at the club and it's not even close.

Did think he might be shoved out the door tbf. Gerrard obviously doesn't trust him.

He drops him if he doesn't bag 2 games running and a few times we've chased a goal and he's either not come on or been given 10 mins.

I'm not sure that's true, he started 7 of the last 10 games.

  4. Exactly. It's either Cameron Archer or another (calculated) gamble with a fancier name and a much bigger price tag.

The closest we've got to signing a 'sure thing' in 20 years is Danny Ings. This smacks a little of new toy syndrome to me.

For me it's not about "can he do a job for us next season?" it's "can he do a better job for us next season than Watkins, Ings or a new top class striker?" I would rather see him continue to develop on loan next season and bring in a new top class striker to compete or replace Ings. He will no doubt continue to thrive on loan, maybe even in a lower Premier League club in a season's time. Until he is definitely better than what we have here already I would rather see him develop as quickly as possible and that will happen by playing every week on loan, not sitting on our bench!

The reality is this 'top class striker' is a fantasy. They don't actually exist yet and whether we have the draw, or realistically the money to buy a nailed on top class striker is for the gods.

I can't name them because I don't know enough about European football, but in terms of the Premier League the list of actual strikers who scored 15 goals or more last season is confined to Vardy, Jota, Kane and Ronaldo.

You find me the next one of them and I'm in.

I’d be very grateful if the Oxlade-Chamberlain rumours would sod off. Not even better than what we can already muster on the bench and hopefully just a lazy SG-Liverpool link.

He's miles better than the likes of Sanson and Chukwuemeka. His realistic comp would be Ramsey, so would add excellent squad depth as one of two centre mids bought in, assuming we want to move one or two on also.

A 'marquee' signing and Ox, whilst moving Sanson and Luiz on has the potential to be a huge upgrade, depending on marquee signing of course.

I've read a couple of times that the manager would like to have the summers transfer business done in time for pre-season, with our first match on 9th July, when do we reckon the players will be back at Bodymoor? 4th July? Maybe 1st July even?

We're three weeks away from pre-season training, so if we want players in for then, moves will need to be happening quickly.

He said most and also admitted that might not be feasible in every case.

I don’t watch youth football mate, nor did I follow his time at Solihull, so you clearly know more about the kid than me. What I would say though (without going OT) is that prior to last season I really didn’t understand the hype around Jacob Ramsey. Sometimes players can improve massively over the course of 6/12 months.

Hopefully Cameron will be the same, some of his finishing for Preston and England looks really natural.

100% this. Frankly, I hadn't even heard of Archer before last season, so I can only judge him on the player I see now, rather than the player he was 12+ months ago. But if you had asked me 12 months ago what i though Jacob Ramsey was going to be, I'd have said upper Championship or lower Premier League at best. Turns out, I am almost certainly wrong about his ceiling.

We need to normalise being wrong.

If he was to go on loan, I’d like to see him go to Norwich. They’ll be right up there again and he’ll get plenty of chances you’d imagine.

Personally, I don’t fully agree with the clamour to keep him around this season. I’d much prefer him to play 35/40 games in the Championship than a handful here and there in cup games.

But then I don’t know what the club thinks of his ability and like others have said, look how well Ramsey did sticking around! But, I feel like Carney wasted a season.

Tough one. I trust the club to get it right.

Carney wasted his own season by not performing when given the opportunity.

He has movement, positional sense, game IQ, and a decisive quick reaction.....not the mention  lethal pegs.

And he’s strong, quick, tricky, nice first touch. Basically the total package without necessarily excelling at any one thing enough that you might pigeon hole him. Oh and he can finish, which is handy for a striker.

  11. Gone are the days when our academy produced a big pile of steaming hot nothing for nigh on a decade, aside from the one player who couldn’t miss. And we nearly **** it with him.

  12. I wouldn’t be that surprised. Being linked with Arsenal is no guarantee you’re actually going to Arsenal, we’ve been there before.

I’m not convinced he’s quite as good as the hype might suggest, which is why he’s being linked with Arsenal and not Liverpool or Real Madrid. So probs at the upper end of our reach?

  13. Jesus wouldn’t work as the lone striker in any system we used last season, so we’d have to switch it up, as in keep the ball on the deck, or play him off Watkins. Pumping balls up to Jesus would be absolutely pointless.

I don’t rate him particularly highly if I’m honest, every time I’ve watched him he has flattered to deceive, but then lots of well informed people tell me I’m wrong so 🤷

Haha multiple people have pulled you up but you still can't see it.

You said Chelsea/Arsenal would kill to have Ollie/Ings in their teams. When someone pointed out that they may not want them due to already having high profile strikes (and the ability to sign them) you asked "And how is that working out for them?". In response myself and others have pointed out that Ollie/Ings haven't "worked out" well for us therefore calling into question why these teams would "kill" for them as you said.

I am sorry that I had to do this.

Oh no, not MULTIPLE PEOPLE disagreeing with me, won't somebody think of the children 😵

Chelsea and Arsenal would kill to have Ollie and Ings over what they have now. It isn't that deep that you need to invent an entire mythology around such a simple statement.

Would people be happy with Ben Brereton Díaz for about 20m/25m. Would that give us a worthwhile extra option next season or would it just be adding to the numbers and not offering much real value to us

    Just use Archer.

Ollie and Ings haven't exactly been setting the world on fire with their play this season either.

Hence we are probably looking for a striker.

    I never said they did.

Reading comprehension on this website is at an all time low.

This is a wonderful point - especially so for Barkley, who I don’t really think much positive of. Part of our biggest PL day in over a decade, apart from maybe a couple of times dodging relegation years ago?

Meaningless to me without fans in the ground. That entire seasons deserves an asterisk next to it.

Poland have got trashed when he came off the bench tonight. Not sure if he was at fault for any of the goals but doesnt look good

Doesn’t look good to who? We’re not trying to sell him mate.
