  1. Squad at the minute:

    Guzan

    Lowton

    Luna

    Bennett

    Herd

    Stevens

    Vlaar

    Baker

    Clark

    Delph

    Sylla

    El Ahmadi

    Westwood

    Bacuna

    NZogbia

    Albrighton

    Tonev

    Bowery

    Agbonlahor

    Weimann

    Helenius

    Benteke

Steer, Siegrist, Okore, Gardner, Carruthers etc all under 21 as of Jan 1st 2013 so dont need to be named in the 25.

22 players to name in the 25. So 3 gaps, assuming we bring in an AM, 2 gaps. Then assuming nobody else comes in, If we then managed to not move on one or two of the 'Bomb Squad' I think it would be silly to not name them in the 25 man squad, if we had an injury crisis we may need to play them.

I'm not sure Stevens is in Lambert's plans. He didn't go in Germany - and Webb was called out as defensive cover ahead of him...

    You missed Okore!

He didn't. Okore is under the age limit necessary to be registered in the squad.

  2. Naive

Redknapp enthused about the quality possessed by Dunne but also admitted if his recent injury problems return the club retain the right to cancel the contract.

'This is a great signing for us,' Redknapp said.

'He's a top-class defender and a great guy. He's a good character and just what we need.

'He was City's Player of the Year four years running, and he will be fantastic at this football club. He's exactly the type I'm looking for.

'Obviously he had his problems last season with the injury but there's an agreement in place that if he breaks down, the contract can be ended. He's confident he'll be okay and from our point of view, if he doesn't have any problems with it then we've just signed a very, very good centre-half.'

  3. Still think we need an attacking midfielder. It appears Lambert feels the same but we have been priced out of our initial targets (Belhanda? and Kiyotake). I imagine shifting the deadwood (Given, Ireland and Bent) will facilitate a signing.

If Benteke does go, then obviously he will need to be replaced also. I imagine Lambert will prefer a strong, physical striker (after the success he's had with Holt and Benteke). Lacina Traore? Kolbeinn Sigþórsson? Castaignos is an interesting link.

  4.

I see the development squad kicked off their pre-season today with a two nil win against Enfield.

The squad pretty much as expected - except no Jordan Graham in there. Anyone know if that's because he is still injured? It doesn't look like he's in Germany.

    Out till september

That's a shame for him. I think there was some talk on here about Houllier giving him some game time. Seems so long ago and he still hasn't featured. Hope he can kick on this season.

  6.

Is there anything better than beating the Aussies in their favourite sport?

beating them in their second favourite too in the same summer? B)

Union isn't the Aussies second favourite sport. AFL and Rugby League are far more popular down under.

Great knock by Bell. Hopefully the tail can now wag a bit and we can get them chasing 350ish.

Continuing with Trent's comments, how much more likable are the English Cricket team compared to their football counterparts!

    Bebe, if you were wondering.

Yes, Ferguson infamously signed Bebe without seeing him play.

But they are still very different transfers. For one, the Dawkins transfer doesn't stink of corruption.

  8. I hope this isn't true

Funny story about Dawkins loan to Villa. Villa originally contacted San Jose as nobody realised Dawkins was contracted to us. They then contacted us and asked us for him on a real cheap loan (at this stage Dawkins was due to move back to San Jose permanently they even had interviews and press conferences complete! You can find these online im sure.) We worked everything out in about 45 minutes as it was against the clock and we were getting a 100k loan fee. After signing him one of their officials said they were ecstatic to get a young right winger to cover injured marc albrighton.Turns out Aston Villa signed Dawkins off of an internet scouting report! They had no idea he was 25, no idea he was actually a central midfielder and no idea he is left footed! This is why he got so little game time as they did not need a player in that position.

Ha I know someone who claims to be 'ITK' on that website... He isn't. At all. There isn't a rigorous interview process before the title is bestowed.

Even if £100k is a pittance for a Premiership side, you still don't spend that sum on a player whose age, preferred foot and club remain a mystery. Dawkins, the antithesis to our transfer policy? Or a spurs fan spouting shite on the internet?

A low-cost gamble that didn't pay off. Moving on...

  9.

Still amazes me that people on here thought he was decent. Apart from the chelsea game, what good did he do that was of any notice?

Damned if I know, I still scratch my head when I think of people voting for him as player of the season.

Spitballing but perhaps it was due to him being the anti-McLeish player? During a season of stflingly defensive football with a manager unanimously despised, I think some fans appreciated a 'technically sound' player.

Given, or even Chris Herd, should have won. Ireland is a waste of wages, space and oxygen.

  10. ^^^ ah fair enough. I glanced over that one as I thought, for some reason, they were talking about Andy Marshall (as in our keeper) taking up a coaching role.

Edit: O was referring to Cizzler's post

No worries. The original quote is hardly a "ridiculous statement" anywho.

  11. Have some posts been deleted in here?

The only positive posts I can see are just people welcoming some new coaches which, as you say, seems to be something we need.

I don't see anyone claiming to know anything about them, let alone "quoting Norwich and Youth Cup"

    I are confused

Probably referring to this one on the first page.

marshall was a defender, was also head of youth development at norwich and they won the youth cup last year so thats suggesting a good appointment

  12. I thouhgt the new Des Bremner, someone elsesaid Frank Carradous and I'd go along with that too.

Someone else said N R Coker - nowhere near for me.....Holman was like an extra player and I would stick my neck out and say for all Vlaars intimidation and good defending, and Bentekes announcement of his talent, and the passing and everything else, for all that, I think |Holman was the key to it all, and the performance it would be most difficult to replicate, and the one we would miss most if injured, especially against ball playing oppositon like Swansea.

Not only the 100 times he closed people down, (often one after the other) but the example this set for the others, demanding by example that everybody joined in the fight together.

Brilliant display. Someone said not great coz it's not Messi - over a full season in this particular League, for this particular Club, at this time in the development , I would prefer Holman.

Had a little chuckle at this post, at the start of this thread.

A hard-worker who was not good enough technically to contribute here. Thanks Brett, but bye.

  13.

Who was the last spaniard we had?

    Er Cuellar...

There was also that Spanish lad who we signed on youth terms. Serrana de la Cruz?! Or something. I think he was the lad who got hyped after an impressive warm-up? Pretty sure he's been released now though, anyway.

  14.

Anyone now looking forward to the exodus more than the next transfer?

Hopefully it's bye to Given, Ireland, Bent, N'Zogbia, Bannan, Albrighton, Holman and Stevens.

3rd or 4th person not to mention Hutton. He is the new Salifou :)

Ha whoops! An unfortunate oversight, rather than any deep-seated desire to keep him.

  15.

    Vydra the Czech pace abuser.

    ATtRcLD.gif

our forward line already has one pace abuser - Agbonlahor - but Lambert won't spend £8m on a striker this year unless we sell Benteke. depth is needed in other areas.

I take it he did nothing with the ball once he got it?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vi7m_Pg_cL0&t=4m39s

    Around 4.40 mark.

    Spoiler - he scores.

  16.

Good news. Hopefully Benteke will follow!

Slightly disappointed its only for three years. Same length as Baker's. I wonder why we aren't aiming for four years? We'll be negotiating again in a year, if we don't want to be in this position again...

As someone else mentioned, it is most likely to keep them motivated to earn another contract rather than getting a 5 year deal and then putting their feet up.

Hmmm. Surely that could be countered by an option for a fourth year triggered if he hits appearance/ performance targets? But as I'm not privy to the contract or Villa's initial intentions and just sat here, widly speculating, it's probably best to leave it there.

  17. Good news. Hopefully Benteke will follow!

  18. Next please

Haha cryptic! Next as in 'it's done. next transfer please' or next as in 'it's off. try the next one on the list' ?

Ah, what the hell. Keep the tidbits coming, Richard. I'm enjoying this transfer window so far.

  19. chamberlain being the prime example, the FA didn't want him tired for next years world cup, he played 33 games last season (hardly any of them starts) if he's tired then something has gone wrong, its a bullshit excuse

I agree, but I am glad that Wilshere has not gone. I think Wenger might have rushed him back a little when they were worried about finishing fifth.

  20. Exciting link. I reckon he would improve our first team immeasurably.

To all those doubting the possibility, is it any different from when Newcastle signed Ben Arfa? (or BeL Haim, to some). Both played in Ligue 1. Both highly rated young prospects with Europe's finest apparently circling. Both have North African heritage (okay, I'm pushing it). My point is that transfers like this can happen. Ramirez has already been mentioned as another case in point. Actually, I think Newcastle has just been promoted when they signed Ben Arfa? So if anything, we are a more established top flight club than Newcastle or Southampton were when they signed their marquee players.
