  1. Holy crap, that can't be a very realistic scenario, can it?!? I know the article focuses on finance but if that came to pass I'd be expecting four horsemen to be following close behind.

It reads like it was written by someone holding a lot of gold stock.

Gold is the ultimate greater fool investment (at least at these price levels) and even better, one that has a negative dividend (since you pay to store it). The flood of money into gold is (one of) the new bubble(s). It will end like the last bubble in housing did, only with governments not concerned at all about keeping the price up.

Yes, I agree. That's why I think the article reads like someone trying to further inflate the bubble.

  3. I found a mobile in a nightclub a few years back. I was looking through the name lists and there were a bunch of weird nicknames as well as "mum". So I called the mothers mumber and she said she would send her son round to collect the phone.

Later that day a huge black Rangerover pulles up with personalised plates and tinted out windows out of which jumps Marlon Harewood with 2 bottles of wine :D

He was playing for west ham back then so it wasn't as cool as if it were a Villa player but cool none the less. I was thinking back over the nicknames in the phone, after I had given it back, wondering how many other players numbers would have been in there.

  4. Although then take a situation like last night, in which Henry apparently told the referee that he'd handballed it but the ref still stuck with his decision.
Eh? Are we talking in the hypothetical here?

According to Mr Henry this morning, he told the ref he had handballed in the lead up to the goal and the ref told him that he is not the referee and should go away.

Could just be Mr Henry trying to save his reputation and Gillette deals in the aftermath though...

  5. I actually think that what makes more sense is to allow any matter of fact (including whether a player was in an offside position) to be challenged provided such a challenge is made to the referee at the first stoppage of play within a minute of the event in question. Such a challenge must be made by the captain, who would be booked for dissent (as telling the ref that the call was blown is dissent, even if you're right) regardless of whether the ruling stands after review.

IMO, making a challenge cost a booking is a high enough cost to limit challenges only to those disputes that would have an effect on the outcome of the game and have a high probability of changing the call.

I recon the armband would get handed round quite a few times in a game if that rule was brought in!

  6. /hospital intercom/

"Paging Chef peterms, Paging Chef peterms"

Sometime in the next week I'll be cooking dinner for my new lady friend, and I don't know what to cook along with some asparagus that I bought. I was thinking a nice hollandaise sauce, but what to accompany this? (I plan on using a packet hollandaise sauce, unless you have a 'from scratch' recipe for it that would be easy)..

I was thinking maybe a lemon pepper chicken breast and some couscous?

    Ideas?

Poached egg on top of those asparagus with the hollandaise over the top. Perfect!

Might be a better one to serve for breakfast though :winkold:

  7. My mates doing an essay this week that he's decided to do on Lynch films, meaning that I've finally had chance to catch up on a few of his works (I'd seen Eraserhead and Elephant Man, and then just not gotten round to seeing anything else of his.

Anywho, the list has included Blue Velvet, Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive, and I'd happily recommend them all. Mulhollands the most complex but also the most engaging I think, Blue Velvet is at times just mad ('Mummy...Mummy! Baby wants to ****!', etc), and Lost Highway is a bit of a mess but enjoyable all the same.

Mulholland Drive is a **** masterpiece though, cracking film even if we were sat there trying to crack the story as it went on.

I like Lost Highway the best. I thought Mulholland Drive was trying a bit too hard. Still a cool movie though.

  8. James Milner was the captain of the quiz team 'Cupid Stunts' who came to prominence in 1976 when they appeared as guests on a special edition of University Challange hosted by a young Eamon Holmes. Unfortunately the Cupid Stunts came second to Wolverhampton Polytechnic.

James Milner doesn't know the meaning of the word second!

  9. ... Anyone that would pick Lennon over Milner must be mad. Milner every time for his defensive work alone.

Milner's a good player, hard-working and intelligent, rarely loses the ball or gives it away, but "defensive work" is not the prime responsibilty of a wide midfielder and is far from being enough reason by itself to pick someone for that position.

Milner's main drawbacks are his relative lack of pace and lack of the extra sparkle and attacking threat as posed by Lennon. He just doesn't have the same ability to cause panic and mayhem in the opposition defence. This is why Lennon IMO will definitely be in Capello's WC squad, whilst Milner, although he stands a good chance of also being in the squad (probably at the expense of Ashley Young), probably still falls into the category of "question mark" in Capello's mind.

I think Capello prefers the hard working consistant players which is why Milner gets picked over Ashley Young. I think that works in his favour vs Lennon as well.

  10. I don't think you'd post the topic if it was anything like you'd have wanted so i'll go for the other extreme, off on a technicality.

Unless of course it's the old double bluff and you want people to fulfill their secret desire to be outraged when in fact he actually got a decent sentence.

I'm thinking it's the former still though.

I am following this line of thought and I can't be bothered voting.

    Couldn't you just tell us?

  11. Pavlyuchenko wants out in January. I say we sign him up. Anyone else like that idea? I think he is a great striker and would do good for us. Probably not MON's sort of player but I could see him doing well for us.

Yeh, i suggested this a while back. Good striker I reckon, excellent finisher.. hasn't worked for him at Spurs, but he's looked really good whenever I've seen him play for Russia.

Rumour is he is going to Liverpool on loan.
