  1. Did anyone see the piece on BBC today about Coventry wanting to put up a statue (or something ) in honour of Management the team that won the F.A. Cup ? George Curtis was there, so is anybody else old enough to remember when he came to Villa ? We were in the Third Div IIRC and a very poor team. George made a huge contribtion to the defence, just as ,argueably , John Terry did.   If you got past George once, you probably wouldn't do it again 😄

Talking of John Bright Street, thats where my folks met in the early 70s. My Mom asked my Dad for a dance in Rebeccas nightclub, One of the great Brum clubs of the 70s.

Rebeccas was in Severn Street; it was a really good gig to play but when we played there, we went down like a  french kiss at a wedding. One of Mr Fewtrell's clubs.

  3. A cabaret artist was crooning a beautiful melodic ballad when suddenly the drummer launches into a Ginger Baker style drum solo. The artist carries on but after the number says to the drummer, " What the hell did you do that for?" Drummer says , "Really sorry, I'm not a very good reader and when we got to that part I thought it said ' Take it' "           I thank you !!

I thought you might like John Cage's 4′33″ but as it was written in 1952 it was probably before your time. 🙂

When I had to back cabaret artists, I was always good at the parts marked "tacet" :)

Not being argumentative, but Copeland has never come across as likeable ("to me", shouldn't have to say it, but it is the internet). He always seemed bitter and as if he was the lead character in The Police. Now don't get me wrong, its tallest midget here as I dislike all of the band and all of their music but one of my favourite things when forced to watch a Police video is Copeland's seething resentment and his inability to hide it.

You may well be right. My comment was simply on his drumming ability; but he certainly didn't seem too keen on Sting .( possible use of litotes here :) )

  6. Just to endorse @maqroll and his comments on Stewart Copeland. Great and almost unique drummer (IMO). An interesting article on YouTube about his association with TAMA drums. He basically seemed to blag a kit off them based on his time with Curved Air and then still endorsed them when he made it big with The Police.. Also explained his style of shifting the beat about by one beat without being a big head at all.

  7. Well , I'm sure the "Management" at Warwickshire know more about cricket than I do, but for the life of me I can't se the sense in letting Henry Brookes go to Middlesex. Meanwhile in the wider World of domestic cricket , Lancashire look like getting Nathan Lyon. Wonder who Warks will be getting as their 'big signing ' !!!

Just bought a new hip hop record from HMV, cost me 44.99, a fella called U Roy. It better be worth the money.

I'm surprised "U Roy" is classed as Hip Hop. I thought he was more of a roots reggae  bloke; however this type of music is not exactly my cup of tea and I could easily be wrong . He has been around for ages though and must be getting on - if still alive !

  9. Don't know if this has been discussed elsewhere but the csae of that Headmistress who committed suicide over a poor OFSTED Report was given extensive coverage on the News tonight. Are OFSTED being unfarly pilloried for doing their job ? Or are they being a little too "enthusiastic". Any one any experience of dealing with them.

  10. Don't know if this should be in this thread or music but - Danny Laine has died. Many will be too young to remember this guy but he was the original guitar/vocalist with The Moody Blues. Came from Tysley and for a short while , worked in Rackhams in Corporation Street. With him in the band , The moody Blues were a "proper" R & B band, rivalling Spencer Davis but I thought they became watered down when he left and ended up in "Wings". For guitar enthusiasts , he used to play a green Gretsch - quite rare now I believe. Also wrote a great number , "Say You Don't mind". which was a minor hit for Colin Blunstone. Suffer badly from having no drums on it :)

All kicking off in Australia. Mitchell Johnson went on an honest and probably correct assessment of David Warner but it seems to have divided a lot of people

Haven't seen that but not surprised. I have a distant relation in Brisbane; he reckons Warner is no that popular in Australia and is, in fact, referred to as "The Grub" ! Considered to have come from 'the wrong side of the tracks'. Don't know how true that is though.

It can be, but it's not a given. I'm impressed by the virtuosity of - say - the Mahavishnu Orchestra, but after a while it just becomes hard work. There is more heart and soul in Neil Young's "Tonight's the Night", even though (or even perhaps because) the band were blind drunk, and the playing is sloppy.

Yep , partially agree; Mahavishnu can  be hard work; first saw 'em on OGWT when the Olde King was alive, Billy Cobham on FIBES drums (which disappeared from the market I think). I would have chosen "Only Love Can break your heart" for Neil Young!! :) . No, I'm guessing Mr Rich was commenting on the simpicity of it 'cos he was such a 'technical' drummer; exemplified by the fact that a drummer he really rated was Birmingham's Carl Palmer. Possibly like guitar 'shredding '  versus neat consise  solos as per Larry Carlton perhaps.

and a lot of villa fans still drink in pubs that openly collected for the IRA every other saturday

We used to play in two clubs in Brum where they did that; The Garry Owen (I think it was called ) and The Pink Elephant (or Garden Of Eden) in Hurst Street. Very much dominated by the Irish; but this was well bfore The Pub Bombings. Any one go to the Arsenal match , where we 'won' the League? We were in a pub with loads of fellow Villa fans ans they started singing , "Bobby Sands is hungry" . Time for a swift exit.

Just finished the Amazon Prime documentary on Wayne Shorter. A must-watch.

Played the solo on "AJA" - Steely Dan. Rumour had it that he thought playing with them might be a little ' beneath him' , until he heard the number and saw who else was playing on that track. Steve Gadd, for example.
