  1. Finally got Metroid Prime Remastered.

What a game. I absolutely loved this back in the day and it holds up brilliantly - it’s possibly even better than I remember. Phendrana Drifts level and boss are some of the best I can recall in any game.

It’s probably my favourite non-Zelda game of all time. Just what was needed after the disappointment of Tears of the Kingdom.

Really hope they remaster the other two as I’ve never played 3.

I’ve no idea how I made it through the original with the classic control scheme, though. Only being able to aim/look up and down while standing still is a nightmare.

  2. To be fair, bar the first few hours, I didn’t take to ultra hand at all. Even with auto build, it was too much of a faff for very little reward. Especially when I’d spend a while carefully selected Zonai items only to be told ‘you can’t take these out here’ because I was standing too close to a rock. It’s gimmicky.  I can see why if someone liked that and didn’t care too much about an actual structured game, why they would love it.

It didn’t quite live up to the Guardian review which said it was a game that would ‘change the way you see the world’.

    Massive shame.

  3. ‘Finished’ this last night. Well, I beat Ganondorf. I’ve seen all of the sky islands but still got 5 shrines to find. Can’t be bothered with the depths, caves, koroks or upgrading armour.

Anyway, turns out that Ganondorf has just been sitting in his cave chilling for the entire game. The final fight kind of sums up the game as a whole. Should be epic but it’s just boring and repetitive.

    Spoiler

First stage is ridiculously easy. I beat it in about 2 minutes just by doing flurry rushes.

Second stage was a bit more challenging. I was struggling to figure out how to hit him towards the end until I realised that you can hit him at will with arrows and they do loads of damage. Turns out all this trouble could’ve been avoided if someone took a bow to the fight thousands of years ago.

Third stage summed the game up more than anything. Looked very cool - two **** dragons about to fight in the sky! Should’ve been amazing and epic! Was rubbish. Dragon don’t interact at all. They both just fly around in circles aimlessly. Jump off the light dragon, land on demon dragon’s back and smash the glowing bits. Repeat.

Quite a cool moment at the end when you have to dive to catch Zelda falling from the sky and then carry her out of the water.

Overall it’s a 5/10 game at best. Started off amazingly but quickly became insanely repetitive. Seems like it tries to test the player in terms of endurance rather than actual challenge. Any difficulty is artificial - items not dropping, enemies being sponges etc. Terrible story and main quest, more or less empty skies, depths all looks the same and takes the piss with how exactly the same as BotW the overworld is, yet somehow manages to be worse.

Story also retcons any Zelda stories that have come before, if anybody is bothered about that sort of thing.

    Won’t be playing this again.

  4. There’s a side quest in this game where the task is to stand on a pillar from sunset to sunrise. I thought it was taking the piss but I started it and that’s literally all it is. I’ve never seen anything like it in a game. I’ve just put my controller down and am writing this post while it goes on. It’s been nearly 10 minutes of doing nothing. Utterly bizarre. There have been a few things that have made me think Nintendo are purposely taking the piss.

I’ve hardly been playing this game but I’m done now. I might do the final boss at some point but then I’ll probably sell it. It’s been too much of a chore to ever consider playing again. Been to a few regions where there’s actually less than in BotW.

It’s absolute shite. Don’t waste your time or money if you haven’t already got it.

  5. Completely agree with the above posts.

Despite all my complaints, I’m still playing it, so there’s stuff that I’m enjoying.

I think it’s a game where you need to make your own fun. My favourite moments have been things like figuring out how to get up to and between sky islands. But even that can get boring and nearly all of the sky islands are empty ruins, anyway.

There’s almost nothing good or interesting about the main quest and the story is awful.

Frustratingly, there’s so much potential. I just want to be presented with something entertaining to tackle, not have to activate terminals, walk through identical caves and fight the same boring enemies constantly.

  6. Can’t believe it - just stumbled into the final boss battle. Another character specifically says that he won’t be there and even gives another probable location.

    Spoiler

Couldn’t possibly be a more unimaginative location - exactly where we left him at the start of the game.

I was exploring, looking for the Hylian Shield and assumed it was safe to head down there.

Was completely unprepared weapon-wise but couldn’t warp away. Gave the first part of the battle a go (which was crap) but had to turn the Switch off when the second part started.

What an underwhelming experience this game has been. They’ve taken one or two great ideas and stretched and repeated them to breaking point. Other than that, there’s a complete lack of imagination to it. There are other great ideas but the execution has been poor (how did they manage to make riding on a robot’s back a complete ballache?!)

Of course, it’s tricky to judge this objectively. I grew up with Zelda and it’s been by far my favourite game series but if this is what it’s going to be now, I’m out.

I’m all for open world but there needs to be a lot more variety and more actual highlights, rather than hundreds of hours doing the same thing again and again and again.

  7. Agree with nearly all that. I’m enjoying it enough to carry on at the moment but it’s around a 70:30 chore-to-fun ratio. The 10/10 reviews don’t seem to be in tune with player feedback and I don’t think it will ultimately be as well regarded.

Despite its size, it’s a really lazy game imo. They’ve followed the BotW template to a tee to the point where some gameplay elements are exactly the same.

My biggest issue with BotW was how repetitive it was and that it seemed like the same handful of areas copy-and-pasted again and again. This game has doubled down on that. Wells, caves, the depths, even the sky are all filler. The overworld is too familiar to generate much excitement and enemies still attack and are defeated in the exact same ways.

Shrines are instantly forgettable and there are no genuine highlights gameplay-wise.

    Spoiler

The Gerudo town siege could have been very cool but fell really flat. I was prompted to build barricades for the gates which had somehow moved out of the way once the attack started, then it was over in two minutes. Gibdos in OoT were actually fairly challenging but now defeated with a single arrow. Resident Evil 4 did an infinitely better siege set piece in 2005.

Lightning Temple started off promisingly but descended into the same Divine Beast-esque rubbish. Again, it’s even worse considering that Nintendo made a much better desert temple 25 years ago.

Also, I’m a bit of a sucker for a good story and this one is rubbish. The same cut scene after each temple and Link chasing ‘Zelda’ around, despite having done all the memories that show that she was actually transported into the past and became the Light Dragon. It also seems to be retconning everything that’s come before.

Ultimately, they seem to have hung their hat on ultra hand, with the game around it an afterthought. It’ll generate millions of YouTube videos, though, so maybe that was the plan.

  8. He’s so, so good. Already one of the best Villa players I’ve seen.

There are little things he does in 50/50 situations to either win or retain the ball when he has no right to that just show a higher level of thinking and speed of thought. The subtlest of touches or movements that make it look like he’s seeing the game in slow motion.

  9. The incident that stood out to me was the back pass. I didn’t see a replay so I assume I’m missing something (or don’t know the rule properly) so would be interested to know why it wasn’t called. It seemed at the time to be the most obvious example of a defender intentionally clipping it back to the keeper.

  10. I’m enjoying some aspects of the game but I did the Fire Temple last night and it was the worst, least fun thing I’ve ever done in a Zelda game. Truly awful design. Yunobo also kept standing in the way so there were times that I couldn’t even see what I was doing, or he wouldn’t keep up so I’d have to backtrack to get him to use his power.

And once again, it’s not a dungeon and it’s not massive. Not sure why the developers lied. It’s a shame as the approach to it made it look really cool.

Pretty gutted about this game after looking forward to it for so long and after how much I enjoyed the opening few hours. I’d hoped it would clear up some of the issues I had with BotW but instead it’s doubled down on them. Quantity over quality.

Quite agree, it's the first one I've done and I thought it was lazy and rubbish. Lods of repetitive climbing/bouncing and the actual temple was ridiculously easy. Two of the turbines needed nothing more difficult than opening a door.  I'll be honest, so far this isn't a patch on BOTW. I think they've spent a huge amount of time on the creating vehicles mechanics and sticking stuff together, and not enough on the actual game. I hate the underground section as well. BOTW felt a lot more challenging early on, and there seemed to be a lot more mobs around, with better variety as well. The dungeons on Skyward Sword were 100 times better than this.

Disappointed so far, might not actually bother carrying on with it.

I never thought I’d say this about a Zelda game but same here.

Bit of a rant and perhaps mildly spoilery:

    Spoiler

It’s just Breath of the Wild again but without anywhere near as much of the excitement that came from exploration and discovery, given that the overworld is largely the same.

They’ve come up with one or two cool new ideas and just repeated and repeated and repeated them. I loved building stuff with ultra hand the first hundred times. Now, not so much. Fusing weapons adds nothing when the results are nearly always the same. Weapons now seem to break even more quickly so you don’t get much time to enjoy anything you’ve created.

It’s a huge game but it’s also hugely repetitive. There’s almost too much to do but 90% of it is pointless copy and pasted busy work. Caves and wells are just boring padding.

Returning enemies and their attacks are exactly the same as BotW. I was looking forward to seeing what was new about fighting a Lynel but it was completely unchanged and I beat it without taking a hit. Most new enemies I’ve come across, despite looking quite cool, are easily defeated with one or two hits.

Even the (pretty poor) story is told through flashbacks found at glowing locations on the ground again.

I haven’t seen anything to convince me that the sky islands are anything other than filler. I’ve been down to the depths once and it was a pain in the arse and added nothing to the game. Had no reason to go back.

There’s genius in there but it’s surrounded by a hell of a lot of filler. Seems like a really missed opportunity and letdown so far.

  12. Hmm. Just done my first “dungeon”…

    Spoiler

The Wind Temple. What a disappointment. That was just the same as a divine beast, even down to the terminals to find in order to activate something.

Definitely nowhere near big enough to be considered a dungeon, with a cool looking but ridiculously easy boss.

Dungeons, and seeing what Nintendo could do with them with this engine, were what I was most excited about with this game so feeling a bit deflated now as that was rubbish.

    ☹️

They kept the terrible climbing rain mechanic then. Halfway up a tower, and it starts raining. Can't do anything until it stops. What a dismal bit of game design.

There are a couple of creatures you can catch to make elixirs that stop you from slipping in the rain. Have a look in caves and around Kakariko.

  14. Incredible so far. Significant graphical upgrade is striking. It looks great, which really didn’t come through in any of the trailers.

Ultrahand is incredibly intuitive, with just the right amount of nudging in the right direction early on.

    Spoiler

Thought the events of the opening cut scene were a bit rushed. Interesting use of a significant name from OoT (Rauru), though.

Is that right? Looking at the list the two games are around the 100 pound total, so are you saying I can get both for £84?

Yep, definitely. Saw it myself last night. Just requires an Online membership.

  16. For anyone looking to buy BotW and TotK, Nintendo Online members can buy a game voucher for £84 which is valid for any two games from a decent list. Both Zeldas are available on it so saves a fair bit of cash.

  17. Not reading any reviews in full as I want to go in as blind as possible but these words from the top of the Guardian’s make it sound fairly promising:

”Occasionally a game comes along that makes you look at life in a whole new way.”

    Blimey.

  18. I really can’t **** wait for this. Insanely excited. Feel like a kid getting Ocarina of Time again. I had my issues with BotW but by all accounts, this game takes all the best things about it and goes above and beyond. Plus an awful lot of new stuff, including:

    Spoiler

    MASSIVE dungeons.

My main issue is going to be, as a grown adult with responsibilities, finding enough time to play it. Could do with another lockdown tbh…

Only 3 minutes of added time in a game with multiple subs, dozens of fouls and two breaks for head injuries.

That’s probably as bad a ‘decision’ as I’ve seen this season because it wasn’t open to the ‘subjective’ defence. It was provably, measurably, objectively wrong. If the BBC data is accurate there were six substitution stoppages (not including Bailey at HT), which alone should cover a minimum of 3 minutes. (Unless the 30 seconds thing is a myth?)

Not that I think we would’ve scored if we’d played all night but it was such obvious bullshit that the ref really should be held accountable, on principle.

  20. Bah. One of the most frustrating games I’ve watched in ages. Could’ve played all night and not scored. We weren’t bad but lacked composure and a decent bounce in and around the box. Had enough chances to win comfortably.

I had a feeling that the levels needed for the Newcastle performance might make us feel a bit flat afterwards.
