Quite. It's like Arsenal fans who keep going on about net spend on transfer fees while completely ignoring their clubs £140m wage bill.
Yeah. Their business model is to pinch the top talent when they are young when they cost next to nothing - examples Walcott, Oxlade-Chamberlain from Southampton, Fabregas from Barcelona, and recently Crowley from Villa - then spend enough on wages to persuade them to stay.

If they do get Shaw the first thing they'll do is convert him into a CB.
maybe they should bid it all on Sir Tackle Goals instead
Jay Rodriguez is good enough for Man Utd.
Maybe I'm jumping the gun a bit to suggest the first thing Man Utd will do with Shaw is convert him into a CB.
If they get him it may not literally be the first thing but I would not be surprised if he is played a few times a CB next season.
He would be England's Sergio Ramos.
Why would they do that when he would be there no 1 lb? He is better going forward than defensively and if anything could play on the wing. He doesn't have the stature for cb.
6'1" is far tall enough to play in the middle and he is well built and athletic.
He also has the ball skills for a modern CB and could develop like Stones at Everton.

2 down 1 to go then!
I dont get why Liverpool want him, the attack isn't the problem for them.
Suarez is going to Real Madrid.

nearly as bad as criticism Aaron Lennon got for having a cigar when England lost to germany
The difference being someone snapped Aaron and the photo was leaked to a newspaper iirc.
He didn't post it up laughing , showing full well he doesn't give a shite about results or performances. Here is to another relagation battle next year Andi with that attitude.
I'm not sure whether I should react to someone who has just 77 posts to his/her name... however, surely the result that counts this season is safety from relegation? For this team, that is success. If you expect anything else you are being unrealistic and you are directing your emotion in the wrong direction.

Not getting the dislike of young Weimann. He's our hardest working player and one of our best prospects. If any of our under-performing strikers deserve a beer, it's Weimann.

These guys are paid peanuts relative to other Premier League players yet they still managed to secure our place in the Premier League next season.
Okay, not very entertaining season but it is job done - and they can give themselves a deserved pat on the back. Criticisms should be directed at the owner for not investing in better players or at the structure of the PL for making money = success.

Ashley Cole left out of England's World Cup squad by Roy Hodgson
-
Carrick's had a terrible season, his worst at Man. United comfortably. It's not like he was getting a regular game for England when he was playing well for their title winning teams. Bit bemused why people are putting him in their squads.
Lampard and Cole would be shock omissions on account of their status and records for England. Wouldn't shock me if either still made the squad tbh.
I find it crazy that people still mention Andy Carroll. Perhaps he can go instead of Welbeck but Lambert is a must for his penalty taking skillz.

Redondo was 6'1"
Leg to torso ratios... obviously!
Let's see if I can find any photos of Redondo with short legs.

The old guard need to be dropped with the young guys coming into the immediate first team.
The legacy of Gerrard, Cole et al in an England shirt is one of mediocrity, time to move on and build for the future.
...but, it was a golden generation.
Or was that just Paul Scholes (played out of position)?

In case anyone wants to informally continue Con's prediction contest:
Cardiff 0-2 Chelsea
Fulham 0-1 Palace
Hull 0-1 Everton
Liverpool 3-1 Newcastle
Man City 3-0 West Ham
Norwich 0-1 Arsenal
Southampton 0-1 Man Utd
Sunderland 1-1 Swansea
Spurs 1-0 Villa
WBA 1-1 Stoke
Thanks for your enthusiasm.
I was going to do a world cup prediction contest and these contests were trial runs. I am interested in a prediction contest for the Premier League next year though.
I'd also like to invent a new fantasy league as I think the existing format has gone a bit stale and has deviated from reality. I don't like the fact everyone can buy the same player and make so many changes. I would like there to be a limited number of Suarez. And you you can only sell if someone wants to buy the player off you - like real trading.

His infamous slip was a good example of why Gerrard is not a defensive midfielder, and that isn't his fault, it's just not his game. A player like Biscuits would not have let the ball roll across his body if there was striker on his shoulder. He's (most of the time) good in Liverpool's system because he's usually not asked to break up play. England will need a player to break up play, because they will be defending a lot more than Liverpool.
Oh come on, he slipped, it happens, it has nothing to do with the fact that defensive midfield is not his position.
Gerrard at 6'0" is slightly tall for a defensive midfielder. Your classic DM is between a 5'7" Claude Makelele and 5'10" Gennaro Gattuso. They need to be nippy and having made one tackle must be able to get up off the floor quickly to make another.
Gerrard's high centre of gravity made slipping in high pressure situations like that against Chelsea more likely. His manager should have known

The winners of the World Cup must have some excellent players? Who'd have thought it.
That's useful information if you want to make a prediction, isn't it?
2014 - England
GK - Hart
CB - Jagielka
CM - Barkley
FW - Rooney

Looking back, Zidane didn't play in the first 2 games through injury, Pires missed the tournament through injury and Henry got sent off 25 minutes into the 2nd game. Still no excuse for not scoring a goal, but that sort of explains a few problems.
No Zidane. That explains it. In the third game he probably wasn't fully fit.
Teams that reach the finals of World Cup have world class players, and in most finals the winner has one world class player in at least 3 key positions of defensive CB, creative CM, scoring FW, and GK.
It's more difficult to evaluate the relative abilities of players at the older World Cups because the domestic leagues were highly segregated. In bold is my evaluation of World Class-ness for the last 10 world cups.
2010 - Spain
GK - Casillas
CB - Puyol
CM - Xavi / Iniesta / Silva
FW - Villa
2006 - Italy
GK - Buffon
CB - Cannavaro
CM - Pirlo
FW - Totti
2002 - Brazil
GK - Marcos
CB - Lucio
CM - Ronaldinho
FW - Ronaldo
1998 - France
GK - Barthez
CB - Blanc / Desailly
CM - Zidane
FW - Djorkaeff
1994 - Brazil
GK - Taffarel
CB - Aldair
CM - Zinho
FW - Romario
1990 - West Germany
GK - Illgner
CB - Kohler
CM - Matthaus
FW - Klinsmann
1986 - Argentina
GK - Pumpido
CB - Ruggeri
CM - Maradona
FW - Valdano
1982 - Italy
GK - Zoff
CB - Scirea / Gentile
CM - Tardelli
FW - Rossi
1978 - Argentina
GK - Fillol
CB - Passarella
CM - Kempes
FW - Luque
1974 - West Germany

Westwood has improved so much this year, if he continues to improve at the same rate next year he will be POTS no contest.

Henry played as a striker in Arsenals double winning 01/02 season and in that world cup. They flopped in 2002 because of arrogance and complacency after winning the previous 2 tournaments. Leboeuf even said that
They flopped in 2010 because of internal rifts within the camp, and inept management from Domenech.
I got my dates mixed up. When I posted that I somehow misread the table on wikipedia thought he was still at Juventus.
Arrogance and complacency in 2002... unsatisfactory explanation. Great teams are often arrogant, but also hard-working. What made them complacent? Maybe like 2010 there was some conflict within the camp.
-
France are a weird World Cup team. In the past 4 they either made the final or didn't make it out of the groups.
2010 can be explained because they didn't have Zidane. Zidane and Henry were present 1998, 2002, 2006, and only Henry was present 2010.
why flunk in 2002? they had Zidane and Henry and didn't score a goal. maybe it was because Henry wasn't played as a striker until he signed for Arsenal? teams figured out how to nullify the threat. that and they didn't have Laurent Blanc at CB. That wouldn't affect the goalscoring but it would have unsettled the team and made them easier to beat.

France 2010 - player strike.
France's chaotic World Cup campaign is in disarray after the players boycotted training in support of Nicolas Anelka, who was sent home yesterday for a row with coach Raymond Domenech.
France were last in their group of Uruguay, Mexico, South Africa.
-
One thing to look out for is team spirit. There is always one or two teams that have arguments within the camp.
At recent world cups it has been Ireland, Netherlands and France, and there is usually an African team that has a wage dispute with its football association.
These teams usually go out in the group stage.

Anyone else get the impression Paul doesn't like this kid? He says that "he still has an absolute mile to go" but with other players like Benteke he says that "he could be anything he wants to be" . I just get the feeling that Lambert is only playing these kids (him and Robinson) because he feels he's pressurised into playing them.
He played Robinson already earlier on this season in the League Cup, probably would have got more game time too if we had managed to stay in it longer.
Jack is a few years younger than Benteke yet and went straight into the Premier League with a fair bit more experience than Jack currently has. People seem to pick up on these comments far too often, it really is just simple man management. Do we want Jack mixing with the wrong bunch, getting an inflated ego and so on? Of course not, he genuinely does have miles to go and he needs to know that, but it isn't necessarily negative for him to be told this and I'm actually pretty positive that Jack knows it himself.
He could improve his long-range shooting.
Also saying he's got "miles to go" might be an attempt to put any potential buyers off the scent and hold down his wage demands. You don't pay the unfinished article the same as the more experienced players in the team, even though they have got a lot of potential.

I think the lad is ready. He came on versus Man C touched the ball about 3 times and I think he won 2 free kicks? He's better than what we currently he have.
Robinson won those 2 free kicks.
Jack was the one with the 100% passing accuracy (out of 5 passes).

World Cup fantasy trading game
in Games and Gaming
Posted · Edited by Con
I'm bored with fantasy football leagues and would like to try out another type of point-scoring prediction game for the World Cup. This one will also incorporate trading.
