Chelsea reportedly looking to offload Ian Maartsen - think I’d rather have him over Acuna tbh due to his age.
Hell yeah.....Maatsen is quality. I thought Poch had said he would be part of his plans this season though ? (Although I may have dreamt this ?)

Find it odd that we utilise Private Jets so much. From an environmental perspective its not ideal. There's a Turkish Airlines flight landing within 30 mins of the Private Jet.
We probably didnt want his first impression of Birmingham to be hanging around a baggage carousel for 2 hours like everyone else.....

Yes, exactly.
Buendia and Mings are important players but at the end of the day we have a lot of quality in the squad nowadays, and the window isn't even over yet.
Absolutely spot on - we have a squad full of experienced players, many of whom are seasoned internationals, plus some exciting young prospects coming through, as well as the likes of Moreno and Ramsay who are only out for another couple of weeks or so. No need for panic and I still think that Emery and Monchi were planning to bring more people in before the Buendia and Mings injuries. More than half the Premier league would be very happy with our squad as it stands....a couple of additions in the right areas and we'll be just fine.......no sweat, no dramas.

Has anyone taken note of the fact that he's actually supposed to be out until September with an ongoing injury ?

Moreno is better than him. Lump Chilwell in with Mount, Guehi, Gallagher, Tomori, Maddison as massively overhyped English players
Moreno is decent, a good player. But he's not better than Chilwell.....no chance.

Great thread and depends what you class as old.
One of the memories I have is away at QPR in the league in 1993 the year we came runners up and there must have been about 10K+ Villa that day.
We lost the game but I remember thinking WOW what support we had and definitely outnumbered the home fans...
Remember this game well.....early morning piss-up and resulting beer fight in the Springbok by the ground, on the pitch after the game with Villa fans hanging off the cross bar until it inevitably snapped. Then driving home through London, coming across 2 Villa lads getting chased up the road by a mixture of a few QPR fans and a few cockbey reds....at which point our minibus made an abrupt stop and emptied out, to explain the errors of their ways...

No.

I'm one of Kamara's biggest fans, but I thought he was really poor today ? Gave up possession far too easily and invited pressure onto himself by over dwelling on the ball. Made one great saving tackle, but caused our centre halves more problems than any of their forwards tonight. Hope he's back to his best real soon.....we need him bang at it.

Didn’t see the game but asked a mate who was there who said we were class.
The biggest thing with Emery is you see we have a plan, no matter how the game goes you can see we have something tactically coached.
Also said Bailey was shit.
I was at the game too....and we definitely were not class. We controlled the game for large parts of the match mainly due to the fact that they were poorer than we were. Kamara and Bailey were dreadful and could rightfully have been hooked after half an hour. We brightened up a fair bit in the second half, Buendia was excellent, JPB caused problems, Digne and Tielemans pretty decent too. Funnily enough, I didnt think the ref was over biased towards them - he gave us plenty of fouls whereby we hung onto the ball too long to invite a challenge, then we promptly fell over much to Valencia's ire.
A good day overall though, the Mestalla is an iconic old lady of a ground.........but those effing stairs up to the stand ! Something else indeed.

I like digne and wilk wish him well if he goes. If we are getting 20-30m for him and big wagss this will help massovely. He is i think 30 too so lets emery get another younger left back that he wants
Will never forget that goal vs united
I agree....and would love to see us try and get Ian Maatsen from Chelsea. He's impressed me every time I've seen him play and I think his speed and technical ability would be right up Emery's street.

The GDP of Papua New Guinea is his appearance bonus I believe. His weekly take home is the GDP of Iceland a week, after tax.
I was told by a reliable 'sauce' that Digne has in fact bought Al-Hilal for himself, out of the overtime payments Purslow and Gerrard paid him for working Saturdays.

....and therein lies the problem. He's not even close to good enough for 'where we want to be'......far from it.
He has no spatial awareness in the box, useless in the air, and just swings a boot at whatever drops close to him. In a one on one situation with the keeper, I'd expect him to miss more than he scores. He scored 15 last season in spite of his deficiencies, not because he's good.....I heard he expects to score 20+ next season ? God knows where we're going to get 45 penalties from.

Spot on folks....Archer just needs time and patience.
Bit more than Watkins who apparently can do no wrong because he runs around a bit.

Valencia just 2.days after Lazio..
Must mean he's going to start 2 separate sides.
Hope we take a decent team out to face Valencis (selfishly, because I'm going to this one !)
Given that its one of Ùnai's old clubs and we're competing for the 'Orange Trophy' or something, I'd like to think we'll be fielding a strong side ?

Any Villa fans going over for this next week and staying / travelling to the match from the Benidorm area ? If so, just wondered how people getting to Valencia, I've been looking at bus/coach from Benidorm, seems pretty reasonable...

He did well with his run and to win the pen, but it's always disappointing when a player doesn't score from the spot. It was a good save, though not bang in the corner or struck with a lot of venom - may have been enough against a championship level keeper (which is the issue). Had another opportunity that he spurned wide, but wasn't a particularly easy chance.
If we're judging him by the standards we expect of Watkins, then it would be a bit disappointing that he didn't score one of his opportunities.
No point judging him by Ollie's standards.....his conversion rate for penalties is 4/9 (44%)....and we still let him take them.

Still doubt he could throw the ball as far as Jimmy Coombs.
Jim Cumbes had no problem throwing the ball - stopping the ball was a different matter altogether....

Emi is currently my favourite player, best keeper we've had since Bosnich and in the top 3 we've had in my 50+ years of supporting the Villa.
But...... the rumours that Unai doesn't really fancy him have never really gone away and is it beyond the realms of fantasy that we could surreptitiously be testing the water to invite potential bids ? I genuinely hope not and i'd be seriously pi$$ed off if he left......but equally I wouldn't be totally surprised. It could even be his agent working behind the scenes to drum up any interest if he's got the sense from the club they'd be prepared to do business if the deal is right ?
All conspiracy theory and/or smoke with no fire ? Jeez...I hope so.

I think his goal scoring is nailed down.....he just needs to be more industrious and consistent with his fist touch out side the box.....I think this will come with minutes in the first team.
He just needs to be a bit involved more, looking for those through balls and capitalising on them....and working to get on the end of them.
His shooting on goal is there IMO.
Most definitely.......he's probably the best finisher in the squad despite his relative inexperience. Lets be honest, for all his off the ball effort and link up play, when Ollie goes through one on one with the keeper we're more hopeful than expectant that he's going to score. If Archer gets the same opportunities I'd be much more confident in his ability to provide the right finish - he just needs game time and patience, same as Ramsey did.

Exactly this. We haven't picked up some chancer on a whim......good sides have looked at this guy and either haven't had the financial clout or bottle to take a punt on him. If all goes to plan we'll have broken the outgoing Turkish transfer record by some margin to have got him.
