VillaTalk would like to welcome the club's latest signing, while simultaneously picking our collective selves off the floor from mild shock.

It's often been said that fullbacks are like buses. You wait and wait, then two come along together. Well OK not often said .... but today anyway !!

After what can be generously described as a 'quiet' transfer window to date for an Aston Villa squad in more need of strengthening than most, today represents significant progress.

Luke Young tonight became Villa's 2nd fullback signing of the day after joining from Middlesbrough. He becomes the club's sixth signing of the summer transfer window following Curtis Davies, Steven Sidwell, Brad Friedel, Brad Guzan and Nicky Shorey's earlier acquisitions.

It is being reported that he has signed a 4 year deal and that the chance to join Martin O'Neill's Aston Villa was just "too good an opportunity to miss".

The 29 year old rightback will replace the outgoing Olof Mellberg and he himself brings international experience with him having represented the full England team on seven previous occasions. He will no doubt want to add to that in the near future.

Young could have joined us last season but instead joined Boro for £2.5m from the just-relegated Charlton Athletic. His only previous club experience was at Spurs after coming through their youth ranks and spending 4 years there before going to Charlton in the summer of 2001 for £3m.

After an impressive first season at the Riverside, O'Neill has decided to come calling again and this time Young has ended up at Villa Park for a sum being rumoured to be anything from £4m to £5m.
