John
Sadly we lost George Curtis on Saturday. He joined us from Coventry in December 1969 and made 58 appearances for us, scoring on his debut at Swindon on Boxing Day. I will never forget seeing him run onto the field before his home debut against Portsmouth three weeks later. His thighs were like tree trunks and he was built like a brick wall, this schoolboy decided at first sight, that he certainly wouldn't be bullied by any lumbering centre forward! George joined us after 487 games with his only other club Coventry City, to whom he returned after retiring as a player following medical advice in 1972 and he went on to manage to their 1987 FA Cup final win. I will also always remember the entire stadium shouting "Villa, Villa, Villa" as George took the free kick that Andy Lochhead scored our winner from against Bournemouth in 1972, during our Division 3 title winning season in front of a 48,110 crowd and the MOTD cameras. George played in 24 of our league games that season and played his part in the resurgence of our great football club. RIP George and thanks for the memories. 1
