I wish people could refrain from saying this literally EVERY time one of our players are immense.

It's even more annoying when it is a player who is consistently good.

I totally agree with this. We always seem to belittle our players with this constant "good at this level" type of comment. He played very well and has played well all season. OK he struggled in the Prem but so did all of our players (apart from Benteke). He was young and inexperienced and asked to play in a critical position in a failing team. Since then he's been on loan and learnt and developed his trade. Let's celebrate that and wait and see how he performs in the Prem when / if we get there.

3-5-2 is an awful idea with Elphick and Chester starting. not a bit of pace, brains or technique in the back 3 to make it work

Are you seriously suggesting Chester isn't an intelligent player!?

I don't think you can deny a player the opportunity to play in the top division. he signed for us expecting that we would be promoted this year. if a club from the top flight comes in with a decent offer of about 20 mil then, all we can do is beg him to stay but we cant keep him against his will.

Errrrrr - yes we can.  That's why we have a contract with him for 4 years.

  4. Nothing is guaranteed with any manager but we only have to look down the road at the Boggies to see what sticking with a tried and tested manager does.  I remember in his first two seasons they were calling for his head and deriding the type of football - it's all gone quiet now!

We need to stick with Brucie for 3 years at least and let him gradually build a solid team - it won't happen overnight.

The guy is finished. I'd rather we give Toner a few games at the end of the season if we are safe then getting in Samba for six weeks.

Whilst i tend to agree there is an argument that says to finish the season really strongly (with automatic promotion form) would enable us to hit the ground running psychologically (team and fans).

I most certainly would in terms of playing ability but in reality his time was up as he'd been the scape goat for too long.

I would also have kept and played Tsishbola and I certainly would not have bought Bjarnason.

Agreed he did ok today, the incident in our penaltly area in the second half (when he won the ball, fell on his arse, got up and won it again) is Huttons whole career in a nut shell.

He's like a little terrier that tries his hardest and will fight anything, but ultimately he isnt going to scare the big boys, a very poor player.

What I don't understand is why Hutton is apparently "a very poor player" and yet Taylor who I thought was the worse than Hutton defensively and going forward "looks a good buy"?

My worry is that we hound these players out for the wrong reasons and then replace them with worse e.g. I would have Guzan back tomorrow.

He **** shit and I'm not joining the wankfest. Have we ever won a game with him playing?

This is just rubbish and you can't have been at the game.

He was stronger defensively than Taylor and far more productive going forward.  Taylor looks a good buy and solid - Hutton is ****!

I have a few Golf mates who are ex-pro footballers.

We play 6-a-side during the winter. Although some of these guys are 50+ they can still kick a ball.

The difference between them and "us never pros" is worlds apart.

Watching Hutton, he wouldnt make our 6-a-side team because of his touch and passing.

    He's simply Shite

    What a load of rubbish.

This one time, at band camp, we played twister, but the extra rule was we had to hold our instruments while playing. I was holding my tuba, when I got right foot green, I was reaching with my foot, when my pants ripped. I slipped, and fell on my tuba. I sharted, and it was really loud, because I had the mouth piece up my butt. And that's how I hurt my knee.

This has to be the best post ever on VT!

Sherwood to blame again for something that didnt actually happen. Guzan is playing slightly better than before but doesnt mean he Premier League quality

Sherwood is blamed for a number of things which in truth weren't his fault.  However, Brad's performance IMO was totally driven by the way in which Sherwood managed him.  We all know that goalkeeping more than any position is about confidence and after the error at Man City Sherwood criticised him openly and it's clear his confidence was sapped.  To compound the problem Sherwood then was very open about his pursuit of a keeper replacement - again Brad's confidence was further eroded. Remy seems to be gradually building his confidence and we are starting to see the results.

Our U21's really are awful, Grealish aside of course, senior isn't much better I suppose, I wonder if Jack will stick with us or go and play for England, the rumour is he turned down a senior call up as he needed time to think about it which is fully understandable...

Both his parents are Irish. Don't make no sense to me. He's 100% Irish blood. Just because he grew up in England doesn't change anything imo. But his choice, I imagine the problem is Ireland are utterly useless and nobody even bothers watching anymore. England are pretty terrible too so he could easily be a full international and get a to play in world cups.

It just won't sit right if he represents Ireland all the way to U21 level then plays for England. Any person who can change nationality to suit themselves doesn't sit right at all.

    And where do you live?

Villa confirms Tom Fox as new chief executive officer

Does " Villa confirms" sound wrong to anyone else, shouldn't it be "Villa confirm"?

Aston Villa is pleased to announce the appointment of Tom Fox as chief executive.

Tom's background in the broader sports industry, as well as his past five years as Chief Commercial Officer at Arsenal, makes him an ideal fit to lead Villa in the increasingly competitive environment of the Barclays Premier League.

Chairman Randy Lerner said: "I was delighted and even flattered by Tom's interest in the Villa job. His achievements at Arsenal speak for themselves and, above all, his reputation as a leader and team builder makes him, to my mind, a great fit to take our club forward."

Chief Financial Officer Robin Russell said: "I have got to know Tom over five years of Premier League meetings and have come to respect his professionalism and industry knowledge. I am looking forward to working with him."

Tom has built an extensive and hugely impressive résumé in the sports-marketing industry over more than 25 years.

In addition to opening the NBA's first office in Asia as the Managing Director, Tom has also headed up Sports Marketing for Nike in both Asia and the US and held the same role for PepsiCo's Gatorade brand before he joined Arsenal in 2009.

"First of all I would be remiss not to thank everyone at the Arsenal for all their support over the past five years. I consider it a huge privilege to have represented the club and to have helped move it forward," he said.

"Aston Villa has always been an important club in English football and it has a long and rich history of success at the top of the game.

"The chance to work with Randy, Paul Lambert and Robin to help restore the Club to its rightful place in the Premier League is a challenge I'm really energised by and greatly looking forward to."

Actually "Villa confirms" is correct - although I must admit it sounds slightly odd.  The logic is that Villa and businesses in general are singular i.e. there is only one Aston Villa rather than multiple of them.  On that basis "it (i.e. Villa) confirms" is correct - the alternative would be "They (Villa) confirm" which is wrong because "they" means multiple of them - as we know there is only ONE VILLA!  Sorry to sound pious but I know this because years ago my old boss corrected a document I'd written and used "They" instead of "It" when referring to a specific company.

Another example of incorrect use might be "BCFC are shit" when correctly it should read "BCFC is shit".

Surely this is a joke, he’d be a woeful signing if it happens.

Hasn’t a clue how to defend or pass the ball. Was awful for Liverpool last season.

FFS Lambert this is even more bizarre than Senderos

I imagine this would be your stock response to any signing we made tbfh.

TBFH I’m sure you’re capable of imagining anything!

And maybe your ability to dream can stretch to this lad becoming a good defender and passer of the ball once he has a few coaching sessions with Paul Lambert.

Unfortunately back in reality he is an over hyped player on a downward trajectory.

Lamberts form in signing second-rate left backs continues unabated. So far it’s Bennett, Luna, Bertrand and now this guy.

Let's play a game: You've got £2m, who do you buy instead?

You beat me to it! Who exactly would you buy for £1.75M then Villastine? Makes me laugh when they conveniently don't answer. I don't care what he has done for any other clubs, if he plays well in a Villa shirt, who cares? He can't be that bad if Liverpool took him on loan.

I'd stop buying defenders that can't defend and midfielders that can't pass and rather than wasting money on lots of sub-standard players I'd buy 1 or 2 players that have capability.

How much has Lamberk spend on left backs? Bennett, Luna, Bertrand loan......

  15.

Change the manager as often as you want, give him shit money to spend and he can't do too much. Yep mistakes made, yep last few months have been dreadful , yes not much progress on last year. But what did the useless owner we have spend? Lerner is useless and worse than Ellis in my opinion

Best manager since saunders eh richard?

yes he is and pity he was not afforded the monetary tools to show it

    Richard,

In all seriousness, what are the points that make you suggest that he's the best since Saunders?

  16.

He's played for the 3-0 defeat in this second-half. Yet we have to pretend that he is an improvement on Alex McLeish for some reason.

At least he never managed Blues. ;)

Pity he didn't, they'd be in the 1st Div now!

  17. You kind of have to hope QPR come up as they'll be the only ones daft enough to sign him.

Either that, or he'll head off abroad to Turkey.

Whatever happens at the club, I seriously think his Villa career is over.

Didn't 'arry get rid of him when he was at Spuds?

  18.

Klinsmann for FFS. He has just signed a four year extension to coach the US team through the next world cup. He lives in California and has a family there and even when he was Germany coach still based himself out of there. He is not leaving the USA anytime soon as if someone in the know says that his is next Villa manager --they are full of it. IMHO

    Thats a bold statement

    But an accurate one!

Can you honestly see Klinsmann giving up waking up in the sun in his villa overlooking the ocean in California for a 2up, 2down in Aston?
