    It’s the ‘L’s for me.

I’m a big fan of accents, but I do also like enunciation.

These are really just regional accents, in the same way that most British English speakers (of all classes) don't pronounce the "R" in the middle of a word (non-rhotic accents), which can be very confusing for most Americans and anyone who has learnt a rhotic English accent. We don't accuse British English speakers of not enunciating because they pronounce "water" as wah-tuh.

The L thing is called L vocalisation, and is a feature of Polish too.

    Quote

L-vocalization, in linguistics, is a process by which a lateral approximant sound such as [l], or, perhaps more often, velarized [ɫ], is replaced by a vowel or a semivowel.

It's a feature of Cockney accents.

We need to be more sympathetic to the way people speak, because literally everyone has their own unique accent that would sound confusing to somebody somewhere.

The main thing is are they talking sense, is what they're saying interesting and intelligent.

  2. My girlfriend comes from one of those families where the whole family has input on everything... loads of nosy **** with too many opinions.

My family isn't like that at all. I'm close to them, but we leave each other alone when it comes to jobs, relationships, life decisions, whatever. Give advice when it's asked for, be supportive, but stay out of each other's business.

Wondering how other people have dealt with this situation? It's a nightmare at Christmas.

  3. There will be an enormous amount of bed shitting now on here, but I think we’ve always struggled more in these sorts of games than we do against teams that try to play a bit of football in our half.

We are missing some creative talent in the final third to break down a parked bus. Our attacking players are all a bit samey - quick, athletic, direct. Think we need a more technical option in there.

VAR was a bit frustrating, I thought the Ramsey thing was six of one, half a dozen of the other, and they should have just gone with the ref’s decision.

Mostly though, our plan didn’t work. We clearly had a lot of planned moves involving a central hall over the top, but Foderingham anticipated all of them. I don’t know if that was bad execution or a flawed plan, or Shef Utd working it out beforehand. Whatever, it didn’t work.

    Frustrating evening.

  4. I think it's great if more people are supporting Villa.

The only hesitation I have is those performatively tribal, AFTV / Twitter troll type fans, who seem to be drawn to the most successful clubs.

But kids seeing Villa and deciding they want to support Villa, and being inspired by our players... why not?

Never stick your dick in crazy.

Impossible for most straight men? Isn't the question how much crazy you can handle without ending up a complete wreck?

I'd say being falsely accused of domestic violence to the point that other people are kicking the shit out of you falls somewhere outside the sweet spot, but others may differ.

Even though Luiz is at the heart of one of our best teams for decades? When you already have one of the best midfielders in the country I don't see the point of rolling the dice in the hope of finding his equal. Keep him and concentrate on growing the club in order that we can spend money rather than quick injections of cash or, at the very least, don't sell a player who is so fundamental to the way we play

Agreed, I think he would be the hardest player to replace, which is why our rivals would be keen to buy him. He's kind of our Xavi now. He's so integrated into the way we play, has a good understanding with everyone around him. It would be ripping the heart out of the team.

Losing Martinez would be enormous, but we'd probably get silly money for him. Losing Watkins would be a shame, too. But I wouldn't be as worried as if we lost Dougie, as I think his ceiling is potentially being seen as the best centre mid in the world in 2 or 3 years.

  7. Yeah it’s one thing not judging someone morally for taking drugs, it’s another thing trying to have a relationship with someone who is clearly using drugs in response to major mental health issues and traumas that are way beyond your capacity to handle.

Stick with the counselling and look after yourself. You can’t fix her. She might fix herself one day, but it’s not your responsibility unfortunately, and not the foundations of a healthy relationship. Sorry.

Were we?  I am pretty sure that most of their breaks were flagged offside (or would have been had VAR had to intervene).  There was one run in the second half where the guy made a great run from deep and did break the offside trap.  The trouble is that with the linesmen not flagging immediately a lot of attacks are allowed to develop that really shouldn't.  It is hard to create clear chances when the opposition have all 10 outfield players camped on the edge of their own box.  When we did create gaps they tended to fall to the likes of Konsa, Cash or Moreno rather than one of our attacking players who might be more likely to get a good shot away.  Moreno and Cash both had really good chances and Ramsey had a very clear cut chance that he completely fluffed.  The commentators on the channel I watched said at half-time that Brentford had created more and then the stats came up and showed the exact opposite - the "chances" that they created were all chalked off the official stats because they were flagged for offside and so don't count.

V fair point re the late flags

Not sure how we were lucky.  We were on top well before the red card - sure it reduced the threat of them scoring on the break but it was a potential career ender from Ben Mee.  If Bailey's foot had been planted on the floor who knows what damage would have been done.

We were 1-0 down and getting caught on the break regularly, and although we dominated possession, we weren’t creating clear chances.

Of course the red card was deserved, but we needed that stupidity from Mee to change the momentum of the game.

A well earned win on the road in the end, but wasn’t a vintage performance by any means.
