  1. isn't that what happens with basketball ?

top players, Federer, Nadal, Messi ???

Likelyhood of getting a serious, career threatening injury when playing a non contact sport is considerably less than that when playing a full contact one.

I think you'll find Messi plays a contact sport. unless he has taken up tennis?!

  2. totally agree Santa but lets face it the Olympics with the worlds most popular sport would be strange .

or should the plympics be the once in 4 year chance for minority sports to get the spotlight ?

Do you mean without the world's most popular sport? I see what you mean, but if it's not taken that seriously in that sport's community, then I don't see much point.

So yeah. Let the other sports have their day in the sun.

I think you should try telling the South Amercians they are not taking it seriously

If the rules would allow it, the likes of the Argies and the Brazillians would play their strongest available team.

Before the games started I saw an interview with Dunga, who was bemoaning the amount of pressure he was under to win Gold. The Brazillian public see it as being as important as the world cup and are desperate for Gold.

I think it's a real shame we do not enter a team, although it looks like we will be doing so in 2012.

At least we wouldn't have to worry about qualifying in the first place!

  3. If he was to stay i don't want him playing. He doesn't want to play for the club. So he won't, simple as that.

Don't you think it would be a bit daft not to play him if he stays?

We are hardly blessed with International quality, left footed central midfielders who can play comfortably in numerous positions are we?

People are getting too emotional over all this. Sure he is a word removed for what he's done, but the fact remains that if the deal does not go through, he is still an outstanding player, who HAS to give his all for us if he has any hope of staying in the England team.

If he stayed he would still be out most accomplished player and if he apologises for his actions regarding the NOTW interview and the 'deadline' then we should just get the **** on with it.

  4. I'm not certain the Crouch/Carew thing would be so unworkable.

Imagine being a back four and facing Crouch and Carew up top, with Young and Gabby/Milner(?)/Lennon(?) coming at you from wide? It would certainly add yet more options to the lively attack we already have.

one things for certain, it's already dragged on nearly a month and as other have said - we don't want this dragging on much longer and dominating the summer. Plus it's getting boring.

I'm pretty certain Barry is all but gone and I think 8m and crouch is a great deal, Crouch effectively becomes a freebie and if it doesn't work out he will still command a reasonable fee in a year or so.

  5. General

Can nothing be done to allow smokers outside at half time?

Surely there could be a designated exit in each stand where some kind of paper ticket (like the Holte suite) or a 'hand stamp' (like nightclubs are doing), so people can quickly nip out?

I would have thought it wil put a lot of people off going in the ground early, and the current situation just means people are going in the toilets to smoke!!

  6. Very good article that.

Certainly made me take a step back and look at the deal again, and whilst I can't say I am over the moon about the prospect, , maybe he could do a job for us as a squad player.

My main issues are the price (I know the market has inflated, but £3.7m is steep imo) and his overall quality.

He went downhill fast after a poor run at West Ham and from what I have seen of him he seems very much a confidence player, brilliant one day, woeful the next.

There are those who say we should back MON's judgment without question or concern, but I disagree. I voted Labour at the last Election, but I certainly don't agree with every decision they make.

I will support the player from the moment he signs on the dotted line, but I maintain that there must be better value for money out there.

  7. General, I have never posted on this thread before so let me begin by saying how grateful I am to you for taking the time to communicate with the fans & thanks to Randy for all that has been done so far.

Now to my question: Is there any chance of season ticket holders who renew for this season getting a free ticket for the Inter friendly?

This was first mentioned by IanRobo on the main message board, it seems like a good idea and a little 'compensation' for the cut price tickets sold last year.

  8. With 1 game to go & either a 10/11 place finish assured the season is pretty much over. Post your verdict and ratings here.

A mixed bag for me, but with a lot more good than bad.

Off the field things have been almost unbelievable, I still pinch myself when I look back at the last 9 months since Randy took over & MON was appointed.

We are now totally different to the club that was rotting from the core during the last dark days of the Ellis regime & you can taste the excitement and anticipation for next season.

I fell i owe Randy and his team a deht of gratitude already for the way they have transfomred my beloved club.

On the field things have been a bit more 'up and down' (or should that be up, down and back up again?). In the end 10/11th place is not too shabby and is in line with my expectations pre-season (although I truly believed a top 6 finish could be obtained).

I do feel MON made mistakes during the season though, and had some of those mistakes been rectfied earlier, a run at Europe would not have been beyond us.

The style of football we played at times was too predictable, but the combination of Paddy Berger remembering he could play a bit, the addition of Maloney and Barry moving to CM alongisde Petrov have seen us play some great stuff of late.

    Player Ratings:

    Tommy - 6.5

Great shot stopper, but dos not inspire confidence when coming off his line and he does not appear to command his area or organise the back four well at all.

    Bouma - 8.5

My runner up for player of the year. Since he ate SWP for breakfast in the game against Chelsea he has been superb. Our most improved player and imo has played his way into being a fixture next season if he keeps it up.

    Mellberg - 7

Some shakey games & he lacked a player that likes to win the 'first ball' alongside him for most parts of the season. Still think he can cut it for us alongisde Laursen or a player of similar style

    Cahill - 6

I think I expected too much, but he has dissapointed me a bit this season. Hasn't pushed on like I thought he would and I thought he had more quality on the ball.

    Ridge - 6

Feel a bit sorry for him as I though he had improved no-end fromlast year. Obviously on his way in the summer. Good luck to him

    Laursen - 6

If only he wasn't a crock. Best Centre half at the club by a country mile, if he could stay fit he'd be one of the best in the prem imo.

    Hughes - 5

Honest pro, but not good enough.

    Davis - 6

Not played enough imo, should have been given a run in CM when Petrov was woefully underperforming. Hope he stays as i think he is a class act

    Barry - 10

Consistently brilliant all season. Secured legend status for me.

His best season at villa by a mile.

    Petrov - 6.5

Expected more from him after his first couple of ganes. Still hasn't hit those heights, but has improved a lot of late.

    Gardner - 7

Really come in in the last few games and looks like he could be a very tidy player. MON seems to rate him very highly indeed.

    McCann - 7

Unfairly derided by some imo. Served us well and had some very good games. I think he might be gone, but I wish him all the best.

    Gabby - 7.5

Clealy not a Right winger, i could be devastating through the middle if he can work on his touch and movement. Excellent finisher.

    Young - 6.5

Struggled up top with Carew, but has been brilliant in the last couple of games. Has the ability to be our Ronaldo.

    Moore - 7

Doing a great job for the team before getting injured. Could struggle to make an impact next year as I fully expecta new striker to come in.

    Maloney - 6.5

A great little footballer and looks a bargain at 1m

    Berger - 7.5

Added style and composure when we needed it most. Hope he stays.

    JPA - 7

Sad to see him go after a promising start to the season. A great pro.

    Carew 8

A huge impact, a massive threat for us and at times unplayable

A Holte End Hero in the making

Not quite as detailed and well written, but I think our opinions are broadly similar.
