Looks like stevie G doesn’t see it the way the majority of us do in this chat as the player that should be next in line to be benched has just been named captain 🤷🏾‍♂️ So it looks like he would favour ramsey over mcginn no matter if ramsey outshines ginny on most match days

Poch are you free to talk mate 👀😂

I don't get the dislike for SJM. I think he is up there as one of our better players. He has had his off days, as most players do, but an element of that is down to the role is he was being asked to undertake at times. I am excited to see what he can do this season with the freedom that Kamara will give him and the better options - a settled Coutinho, second season Emi and a fit Bailey - in front of/alongside him.

Equally, i do think he has better captain characteristics than Mings.

And captaincy does not guarantee game time. E.g. Henderson does not start every game for Liverpool and Citeh rotated the arm band last season.

Just done that poll on Birmingham mail of who to keep and sell and Traore is the player who is comfortably bottom of the list people want to keep (below Sanson, Guilbert, Luiz and Hause)

Is this a recency bias thing or has he stated he wants a new challenge? What am I missing, why do so many want him sold?

Because he is injured a lot and, when he is fit, he is lightweight and inconsistent offensively. We have seen a few moments of brilliance but that is not going to get us where we need to get to.

  3. The most popular current links, that also make sense, given the speculation as to where we would want to add, are Sangare or Gallagher and de Tomas.

If we were to bring one of those midfielders in and de Tomas, would people (1) be happy and (2) think we should be aiming for top 8 with the squad that would give us?

Practically everyone has to 'earn' a living, and more money is earned by moving up the job ladder based on performance and experience.

Carney is a good young developing footballer. He looks as though he could go a long way but at eighteen that's not proven, and he still has a lot of improvement to make in certain areas. He's not yet good enough to be a starter in the Villa first eleven on a regular basis.

Five/ten thousand per week is more than enough for a teenager who is no more than a squad player currently and probably still living at home.

He and his advisors appear to be demanding wages and playing time that he hasn't yet earned.

Agreed but you can't knock them for asking - tbf to them the kid has probably put £10k on his salary since the end of the season with his Euro's performance. The kid hasn't said anything yet as far as I can see (lots of media speculation) he's just not re-committed.  We're clearly not privy to what is being asked for (salary or playing time) but I doubt there are many PL teams that are better positioned at the minute to give him the optimal combination of these two things. The Big 6 might be able to pay more BUT he won't see game time and those that might give him more "guaranteed" game time may do so in a struggling environment and will probably be less able to pay wages we can. Hopefully, he'll realise that the grass is not always greener over the coming months.

Equally, whilst he looks strong on the ball - glides in possession and gets in to good areas - from what I have seen he has a lot of development to be done off the ball/out of possession. He is a long way from the finished article and the playing time and monetary demands speculated in the press.

Not much we can do.  We can't cave into to every demand from a youth player, need to put the foot down at some stage and show youth players they can't demand what they want no matter how good they are.

Our youth system is the best it's ever been, I think Carney will quickly be forgotten as soon as a new player bursts onto the scene.

From what I have seen he is an "8" and not a "10".  He moves well with the ball at his feet and is powerful for his age but he also looks off it/a bit sluggish defensively - a key area that he is going to need to get better at if he is going to make it at the top level. He looks like he has potential but is way off the level that, say, JJ is achieving at the minute (I accept that he is a couple of years older) and he still has a lot of development left as well to really be the player we all hope he can become.

I can't see anybody at PL or big club level paying £20m for him but I also can't see anybody giving him the money he appears to be asking for or the guarantees over playing time that he wants.  He must have looked around that England U-19s side and noticed that he had more PL game time than any of them. I don't blame him for pushing for as much of a commitment as he can get but I can't see a better home for him at the minute than Aston Villa. Let's hope that common sense kicks in and he signs a new contract and knuckles down to follow in jj's footsteps.

If we are going to sign a striker.....it needs to be someone who is significantly more clinical than Danny or Ollie.

At present their ratio's are good, not great, but ok c 2.8:1.....anywhere between 2-3 is ok......c 2 is prolific....but is only a general thumb rule.

For me, there is no point in signing players no better......We have Cam who's record in lower level football is impressive, maybe we use him as a challenge to Ollie and Danny.

I read some of the links to foreign strikers and I am not filled with confidence, they will be any better.

I am still a believer, that TEAMS score goals in the main, strikers just finish off the moves....I don't say "just" lightly though.

It would be nice to have a striker, who can score, when we need one....hard to get.

I would be more focused on upgrading Bertie, so we have four decent options for the inside forward roles, especially now we are moving to five subs. When he's on he's fantastic but he's far too inconsistent.

Buendia, Coutinho, Bailey + 1 with Ollie, Ings, Cam and Davis (I would keep him because I think he gives an option we don't have and could be used more frequently with five subs) gives us decent options to flex/rotate/sub.

I wouldn't be averse to another striker though as getting Cam back out on loan where he would play 30+ games wouldn't hurt at all. I am not sure many would be an upgrade on Watkins (who I really like and think he is harshly judged) and Ings but would allow us to rotate and flex our play.

Which means we won't just sign sub-standard players for the sake of it.

Look at what we did at backup left back. We needed someone there, and whilst we wanted a young up and coming quality player, they didn't want to come this year because they knew Digne was first choice. Rather than force the issue by signing on a permanent the first player who would agree to those terms, they made a good little cheap loan signing to solve the immediate problems but still keep our options open long term.

Everyone wants everything right now, it's the nature of things. But being in this position where we are being choosy, patient and shrewd in our targets is only a good thing in my eyes.

Agreed. Very similar to Klopp when he arrived at Liverpool. He knew what he wanted - Keita, VVD and Allison - and was prepared to wait.

I have no insight into what Carney is being advised to do, but I do have a fairly decent scriptural knowledge due to my traditional upbringing in the 1950's.

I wonder whether the issue clouding this contractual disagreement is down to Tithing. Pastors (especially a couple of well known Nigerians) have become very rich by insisting on this practice.

Tithing is the biblical instruction that a proportion of a persons income should be given to the church. These Pastors quote the book of Malachi in the Old Testament saying if you're not giving your tithes to them you are disobeying God. They say that if you obey all the rest of God's laws, but fail to pay a tithe (usually a tenth of your income) to the church, then the gates of heaven will be closed to you.

I really hope that Carney isn't being used as a Pastor's cash machine.

This isn't an accusation, it's just a concern I have because of reading about how devout he his. I hope I'm totally wrong for CC's sake.

Sounds like he should change his name to Carney Churchrichmaker!!

Yes and No. if you get big money for that talent and spend it wisely you can be successful. Look at Spurs and how much they kicked ok after selling Bale.  Liverpool after selling Coutinho.

Nowt wrong with selling players if you get silly money and reinvest it all. Plenty of talent out there.

If I remember correctly, Spurs did a terrible job of spending the Bale money. They just got lucky as the big 6 wasn't formed/established at that point and Harry Kane came through, effectively for nothing. Liverpool, however, did spend the PC money very well and strategically.

Said a few times now I think Palace have quietly done some really good business

Eze, olise, guehi, Mitchell, now this Derby kid, all good young English Londoners with a lot of potential

If they could get more out of edouard and then continue to phase out the older players they will push for top 10

They've got a big hole now that Gallagher has gone back to Chelski. Just as Brighton have when Bissouma moves on. I think they'll both struggle to plug these gaps unless they hit very lucky.

I have a feeling we're gonna be hit with a surprise one that nobody has really mentioned like Danny Ings last year.

Lange will pull something out of the bag.

Let's hope, if you are correct, that Lange's rabbit works a bit better than Ings has.

It's mental. People want a rebuild every season. The signing of a new player(s) becomes the most important thing. There is no thought that players can improve and develop. Remember the verdict on Ramsey at the start of last season ("dogshit mate")

I don't recall many dogshit comments but I think a lot, including me I will admit, thought he would probably benefit from a decent loan at a top championship side.

    It’s crazy really.

I honestly believe that if the club did nothing until the last week of the window and then signed Kamara, Diego Carlos, Countinho and Olsen, it would be viewed as a great window.

The trouble is with fans (though it makes perfect sense for the club to get stuff early) is that signings are forgotten about quickly in a window, and it’s just “ok where’s the next one”

I agree BUT they've probably made it worse by being so proactive at the outset! I think people saw the four signings and would just carry on with that pace until pre-season! Not possible for anybody other than maybe Citeh and Plop??

Excellently put, and just to add to that we will be trying to have those starters as rotational players in turn improving the squad.. starters such as Luiz and Mcginn would be coming off the bench , don’t get me wrong too mcginn on the right day is the best player on the pitch but he goes missing way too frequently hes a 1 in 4 player we need a 1 in 2 player

As has often been said, playing an unsuitable role. I believe that, if the team is set up properly/geared up to suit SJM i.e. we have a strong DCM, we will see a different, and much more consistently good, SJM.

If he was a 30 year old and happy to play the offer something different role I would understand but if I was him  I would be looking to move , I’m sure he loves it here but he really is at the stage of his career where he needs to be playing regularly.

I think he would be much more involved 1. Having shown what he is capable of e on loan; and 2. With five subs allowing much more flexibility in substitution s or changing approach and KD offers something very different to Watkins and Ings.

Villa are not attracting £80m forwards at the moment, especially ones with a goal return similar to what Watkins gets for us.

I think this is right. 1. I'm not sure we would or should be signing players for this amount at present (budget/ffp); 2. An £80m player will typically want CL which we can't offer; and 3. We have other priorities.

I believe that Ollie is something like the 6th highest scorer in the PL over the last two seasons ... arguably punching above our weight!? He is better than many on here give him credit for, imho, and with a good pre-season should be back firing next year. He is not Kane but very very few are ... that's why Citeh were looking to pay £100m+ for him last year.

I think, if we do sign a striker, it'll be for rotation etc.. Five subs means plenty of options to change your attack during games and the ability to rotate more/start others as those rested can always get 30 mins. Of the realistic names seen, I am not sure any looks better than Ollie??

Really hope we bid for Sangare or a similar player.

We have been weak and lightweight in midfield for far too long and struggle to keep possession. So sloppy and wasteful.

Kamara is going to help but it’s unfair to heap so much responsibility and burden on him alone, he needs a helping hand. And shouldn’t be under too much pressure.

Tired of us being overpowered and outmuscled in that midfield scrap, it’s about time we addressed that properly and stop losing/wasting possession so cheaply.

Overall, we’re quite a small and maybe even “weak” team. Some added physicality coupled with quality on the ball will really enhance us.

We have such a solid base with Mings & Carlos.

I’d like us to have similar in midfield (Kamara and Sangare should do the trick) and allow the attacking players to fully express themselves, let Buendia & Coutinho shine and JJ join in on the fun. McGinn can warm the bench & recuperate occasionally - he’s more of an asset when he’s in peak condition and gives us that energy.

If we keep Sanson and Luiz, they’re great options to have and will hopefully be fitter and in better form. We need options, it’s a squad game and we have 5 subs this season. Too many players we haven’t seen anywhere near the best of and shouldn’t be hasty with or desperate to discard…

Get the players used to a bit of rotation before heading into European competition and a more hectic schedule… it’s going to take a hell of a lot for us to achieve that but it’s been our aim for a while. Strengthen properly and get everyone fit and in form, then it doesn’t seem so unlikely…

I hope and expect to see much better form from the majority of our players. Just thinking of Coutinho and Buendia at the top of their games is exciting, imagine if we manage to get the best out of most of the others and add even more quality…

Maybe that’s too optimistic but I think it’s best to be positive and give everyone a “clean slate”. Last season was disruptive, hoping for more stability and success going forwards. The manager simply has to do better and I’m confident he and the players will…

Would you view Soucek as suitable? Looks like West Ham are getting JWP and therefore there may be quite a bit around the Soucek rumours?

  18. Wouldn't be the end of the world (for me) if he stayed, especially if Cam goes out again. Especially now you have 5 subs. Davis offers something different and we have seen his use as a foil at Forest. He can be unplayable.

I know many will disagree though.

That is literally the definition of worth though…….

That's not the definition of worth. It might be the definition of market/realisable value because the market has determined the price, but whether he is worth that are not can be subjective.

Depends what you mean by holding his own. He wasn’t bad but if you ignore his age for a second, he didn’t massively impress either. That’s not a criticism because obviously he is young and has bags of potential but we can’t sacrifice our own results to repeatedly start a kid for his development or to get him to sign a contract.
He should be nothing more than a well used squad player until he proves himself worthy of a start (or injuries provide him with an unexpected opportunity). Five subs and a cup run or two will give him loads of game time this season.

I think he has suffered from not being used in the correct way. The only time he has played at "8" (from memory) was with Ash Young as the other "8" and I can't remember who was the "6". Every other time he was brought on as a "10"! We need to see him as an "8" (box to box role) with a proper DCM behind and SJM/JJ alongside. A couple of games like that and we can see whether he can replicate his u-19s form in the PL.

They can before 2023 when the Chelsea buy back clause kicks in.  Same as Tammy at Roma, they have a buy back clause for £67m which comes into effect in 2023 also, but they could sell to anybody this season for as much as the like.

I don't know the specifics of the deal but I'd be very surprised if it was drafted that way. Take Dougie, for example - I don't think we could have sold him in the buyback period without first asking Citeh and, if there was a profit, they would have exercised their option first and then sold on presumably.
