I don't think it's necessarily a case of Emery is happy with olsen but he'll definitely know what the market is like and who else is out there, if the answer is not a fat lot then he's going to support the guy he's got

We're not going to spend 20m + on a back up keeper who may turn out to be worse than we've already got!

When did it become Olsens fault we lost to Stevenage? Wasn’t there 10 other players on the pitch? 9 after Donck got sent off. If we’re dropping players completely because of A freak result, then surly should be applied to all the players who played that game?

Stop talking common sense mate....it will get you nowhere on this site!

You can talk about him lacking confidence all you like if it makes you feel better, but he’s garbage. I couldn’t care less who Uniteds/Arsenals second choice keepers are, ours is rubbish and he’ll cost us again this season.

Still hoping we can move him on and bring in somebody semi competent.

    Is your middle name overreaction?

Screw Twitter and many so called fans that use it to post shit like this.

Yes, comments like this are really pathetic. By implication he's also having a pop at Unai. Didn't take too long for idiots to decide that they know how to manage our club better thanmEmery

Didn't Martinez concede 11 goals in 3 consecutive games last season? Statistics like that mean very little

Exactly.... selective memory at its best on this thread!

I’ve seen Martinez have bad games, you’re allowed two or three a season. The problem with Olsen is that’s it’s more like 50% of matches he has a howler moment, like against Newcastle where he passed it to their unmarked player at the edge of the box. Over the course of a season (say if Emi breaks a bone or tears a ligament) that’s not two or three bad matches.

How many games are you basing that opinion on?. Nobody wanted or rated Martinez that much in his younger days. He's only been rated since we gave him the opportunity to play regularly! Look how well that had turned out!!

Like you, being positive about him, it’s based on our own opinion.  Additionally though my argument is backed up by history of him never playing well for us whereas you have no history of he having a good game for us or showing future potential.  Your view seems based on hope, mine is based on seeing the same as what I’ve seen before from him.

Yes, only my opinion, I can agree on that...it could be that he's been poor due to his  relative lack of game time! So why not give him a break and see how he performs if he has to/need to stand in for a number of games?... That's the only way that we're ever going to find out

I think we’ll have to play a different way when Olsen is in goal. It’s no coincidence his only good game for us was when we had a back 6 at times.

Yes, great game at Spurs and we win at a canter!!

I posted this in the transfer thread but I’ll put it here also

I think it’s near impossible task finding a backup keeper, I don’t think any team will come in with bid for Olsen , Championship is his level but he commands Champions league level wages hence the reason Roma had to loan him out for so long. Bringing another  experienced keeper in and dropping Olsen to no 3 doesn’t make sense financially or in terms of squad harmony. It would be nice if someone came in for him but I think it’s unlikely .

100% this all very good points

    Can’t agree, sorry!

Read the Martinez thread then. There are numerous times when Martinez was criticized last season! You have a very selective memory when it suits your narrative.

    With some justification

There is no justification....most opinions on here are based on a couple of bad games and I've seen Martinez have just as many bad games. Olsen will improve when he has a number of consecutive games if and when he needs to!!

Game time is everything for a footballer and when you are brought in just for the odd game it will always be very difficult, especially for a specialized position like a goalkeeper

It's even harder when the fanbase jumps on every indiscretion. How about we get behind Olsen and actually help and support one of OUR players. Unai supports him So should we

Well said mate. The overreactions on here with regard to Olsen are 'off the scale'

Unless we're bringing in a keeper to challenge Emi for the #1 spot (which would take a huge investment), there is always going to be a drop off in quality.

The cost of bringing a new reserve keeper in wouldn't be massive though, so I'm confident that the finances aren't stopping him bringing someone new in.

Unai obviously thinks that Olsen can improve and adapt to his playing style. Being honest, how many keepers that would come here to play second fiddle do we actually watch on a regular basis? If Nyland was still here and we were replacing him with Olsen, we'd be delighted, but we wouldn't know much about his regular game other than the odd game and his CV. Pick any viable name, and we'd know as much about their strengths and weaknesses as we did about Olsen when we signed him.

Emery knows Olsen, sees him every day, and it appears he believes he can do the job of a reserve when called upon. It's not an easy position to fill - Man City still have Scott Carson on their books.

Well said mate. Loads of clubs have worse back up keepers than Olsen imo

    Daft.

Our season is done if Martinez gets injured.

You can pretty much also rule out winning a trophy next season if Olsen plays cup matches.

    Really odd decision.

FFS...if there was ever an overreaction this is it nothing odd about having a keeper who's more than capable of standing in for Martinez when needed.

The reality is that we can't just sign anybody, and Emery has to prioritize certain positions in the team.

He obviously believes signing a back-up keeper isn't a pressing concern this summer.

    Agreed 100%

Have a bad feeling Emery is going to regret this.

If Unai has faith in Olsen so do I. Unai is no mug and will know better than any of us exactly what he needs. Only time will tell so why not give him some time?
