Do you have any evidence to back up this claim? I’ve seen one graphic where Grealish and Trez were amongst the quickest.

I saw an article on the athletic about it at the opposite end of the scale were man city, chelsea and Liverpool if i recall correctly.

I think that may well demonstrate speed can be somewhat correlated to success. Maybe?

Almost a shame to have fans back in the stadiums now.

Imagine Villa Park decked out like this but with his face on every picture

  3. I think it's a risk going into next season with Davis and Wesley as backup for Watkins. Neither of them for various reasons can be fully trusted to be the main striker in the event of Watkins being seriously injured. Question is can we fund a replacement to the level of Watkins again.

  4. Can't say anything bad about him.Hope he is fully recovered from this injury now.

Steer is a.capable number 2 I think. More concerning is how we get Kalinic off the books.

A few weeks ago someone posted the link to a great podcast by an academic football finance specialist. He explained the nuts and bolts of what Villa could theoretically spend last summer if we wanted to. Main takeaways were: i) a lot, lot more than people expected, ii) FFP is basically the Swiss cheese of financial regulation, to be manipulated and ignored as required.

So long as the accountants can show it through the books, the club can claim to have lost whatever it wants as a result of the pandemic. This can then be used to defend transfer spending.

The world isn’t short of creative accountants for those with the resources.

I would love that to be true. My only concern is if we do this and come up short could we be left in a xia like financial meltdown again. Very worst case would be a sale of any valuable players I suppose.

If we do that then we will be out of the hunt for Europe. This season is our chance to catch up to those lower Europe teams because they won't be spending too big either (except Leicester - soumare is an amazing signing). We desperately need to be investing heavily. I wouldn't be surprised by a 120 mil outlay on the first 11 and then some smaller signings as depth for defence.

So where does that money come from and how do we account for it within the cheating racket that is FFP. There is no official announcement the rules have been or are to be relaxed. We just had a season with no fan income, had to pay more money out in rebates to the championship.

Unless you think we are immune to FFP and have a magic money tree. I am aware that we are now free of the 3 years FFP limit so the last season of the championship is no longer relevant, but simply looking at the accounts should tell you £100m spending is insane and not possible within the current rules.

  7. People expecting us to be spending £100m for a third summer in a row, after a season of huge losses are wrong. It will not happen. That is not sustainable spending. If we spend more then £50m to improve the first team that will be a huge surprise.

NBA is a totally different financial model.

Exactly you can't compare spending in American sports to here. Over there the owners don't really spend much personal wealth to make a team successful. It's just not the same as football here

If Wolves are selling off their talent to fund a rebuild we should just go in big on Pedro Neto. £50m they’ll accept. He’s going to the top that kid

I would be all over that for the price. I suspect he will have many options.

based on? is it the fact that they are a team in decline? the fact that they also cannot offer european football? the dull football they play? the huge rebuild job they have this summer? the embarrassing fanbase that are the joke of the country? the lack of any real world class talent they have in the squad (apart from maybe aubamayang)?

being based in london he wouldn't need to move as far...that's about the only reason i can think of as to why he'd choose them over us if the terms were on par

Based on all manner of factors you wish. Look we are all villa fans and think we are better than we actually are I get that and that is fine. And yes Arsenal at the moment are not the side they once were and may never be again yet they still finished above us, they can most likely offer higher wages after years and years of unbroken European competition, they can offer the attraction of London (whatever that is, I think the place is a dump but whatever)

That's not shitting on us, but we are still a bit off Arsenal as a whole setup.  We are still recovering from years in the championship and as fans needs to keep the perspective even though we made terrific progress this past season.

That said if we can sign him, it may show that behind the scenes things are more progressed than I am thinking.

  11. Being realistic if he has the choice of us or arsenal I genuinely will be surprised if he chose us. Ultimately they are still a more attractive proposition..

And before anyone mentions Martinez that's a completely different situation.

I wonder how long Lange has been conducting foreplay with him - it's a vital part of any signature - they must feel wanted. That's where Sherwood went wrong, with his full facials.
