Yeah - I think the strong allegiance is exactly what Sky are after with the likes of Souness, Neville, and Carragher. Look at Evra more or less breaking down because United were beaten by Spurs or Keane having an axe to grind against the club that turfed him out. For Sky it's all about creating that sort of drama nowadays rather than actually providing any sort analysis.

emotional reactions will get you more noticed than a smart analytical breakdown.

You're just buying a load of out of the money options for cheap, and hoping that a couple pay off. It's a very smart strategy, but takes time as you said. We seem to be really nailing the Academy right now - which I think could be a crazy winner right now. You think of all those clubs across the UK alone that are struggling to the keep the lights on, they are likely to cut the academy first (we are human and we think of the immediate first - you'd sacrifice your 5 year health to stay alive for the next year). Even PL clubs are doing the same. |

Kind of as Buffett says, we have cash when everyone else is suffering and scared. I think we're nailing this...

Aha you got to where I was it was hoping to get to. Our recruiting for the academy has been great in this window. I just hope that we got a bunch of jacks coming through together.

Well yeah, but younger players are, are all things remaining equal, more expensive than older alternatives. Of course if possible we all would like to get young up and coming players, but we don't have infinite money.

And to a certain extent, the higher return you can get from selling improved players in the future is also balanced by said higher fee you have to pay for them. Which ideally shouldn't be too much of a problem, but the thing with buying young players is not all of them actually improve with you. So you might just as well make a loss on them.

All transfers are a gamble... be it young or old.
older players, what you get in the short term can bite you in the long term.. more prone injuries decline in performance and fat wages..

    younger is what you said.

the safest gamble is real long term and get great kids in to the academy... don’t cost a lot with fees and wages and have so much time to develop around the clubs philosophy and playing style. But the drawback is that’s probably a 5 year wait until they are ready... and that’s still an if they can... This method is good if you want to build a long term legacy team, such as peps Barcelona or fergies Man U.

2009 was arguably our best one in recent times. Dunne, Collins, Warnock all massively improved our backline although we didn't get much longevity out of any of them.

This is one of the main reasons why I’m not as keen on signing older players. They do a job for now, and it all looks good, but after a season or two, you’ll be getting diminishing returns. Just like the names above.

the trick is getting players on the up, so we get more out of them, and for whatever reason we have to sell them, we can get some profit out of it too.

like the Watkins vs Wilson debate. In terms to investment to the club and squad we are more likely getting a better return from ollie, he has better chances to be in the team longer and improving each season with us, which makes the club better and if the club chooses/needs to sell him, it will get a nicer return from him. However, Wilson is at his peak, and each season he is closer to regressing due to his age. So if that does happen, it only brings down his value, to his potential sell on fee and to the squad.

how I would of seen each signing is in the terms of short term and long term.

callum fixes the problems of now, such as ensuring safety

ollie fixes the problem of building a challenging squad for the future. also, so far he looks like he’s fixing the problem of now too.. nice business villa

You can’t develop your left foot can you? Surely it’s something that has to be done as a kid.

Never too old to learn anything new

also, he has 3 months of potentially not playing. So what’s the worse to happen, he gets better with his left foot

i don't see that happening personally. i know some fans despise taylor to the extent that i've seen calls for mcginn to be played LB but it's just not going to happen. he'll be 3rd choice RB and probably 5th choice LB, after Hause and Mings

Maybe currently, but if he retrains, he could easily surpass Taylor.

he got the theory, he just needs to get on with working on his left foot

he can still leave can't he? to championship clubs i believe

not sure we're going to register 3 right backs so can see him having a very boring season

Key point to my statement is retraining...

it’s his his best bet if he don’t want the “boring season”

Absolutely scary that outside of Ming's, Trez, and Martinez no one else in our starting 11 has even entered their athletic prime for a footballer.

Who says that Mings, trez and Martinez ain’t reached their prime yet.

I agree with a lot of posters that a CB or strong DM who could cover both would be very welcome. I’ve no idea who.

At LB Rico Henry would be great both as a defender but also his attacking ability gives us options further forward.

Up front would people take Pukki from Norwich as rotation and injury cover? He started last season very well but tailed off badly. That could have been down to a lack of confidence as he defeats mounted up. Rejuvenated he could be a good option.

I think Sunday showed no matter how good your squad is if you lose one or two key players you will suffer.  I think our problem is if we lost any one of Martinez, Jack, Ollie, Mcginn, Cash Luiz, Konsa, Target or Mings we become significantly weaker.  If we lost more than one of them at the same team we go from a top 10 team to avoiding relegation.

It’s just how it is and why the bigger clubs with a bench that could get in to most first times will always do well.

Hopefully we can have some look with injuries and suspensions this season.
